A friend’s daughter is going to college in Ohio and had done Teen pageant in her state and loved it! Wanted to encourage her to do Ohio prelim and yet want to clarify basic info for when I mention competing to her.

1. Does Miss Ohio have to take off from college a year when she wins?
2. Sounds like the program has struggled… do they win good scholarships? - this she needs.
3. Since she would be from out of state - would that hurt her as a contestant?
4. Sounds like a local title is important, are they regional or opens?

Thanks so much!

[> [> Subject: I agree about Portsmouth prepping their girls. They had great success this season prepping their 3 girls capturing the Miss Ohio title, her 1RU, and a T10 finisher. Clayland still preps their girl as well- they only have one titleholder- and they offer a larger scholarship, I believe. Charmea who runs Miss Greater Cleveland will end up sending 5-7 girls to Miss Ohio. She's already crowned 3 this weekend and if she holds Greater Cleveland in March, will probably crown 2-4 more girls. One Local Director can't prep all those girls.

And Ohio is welcoming to out of state girls? Thanks!

[> Subject: 1 - no. Ohio relies on the winner to make her year what she wants. The board doesn’t help them whatsoever. She’s on her own. 2 - scholarships haven’t increased in many years. Miss Ohio still gets the same $10k she got in the 80s and 90s. 3 - as long as she meets the residency requirements, she’s an Ohio girl. 4 - the entire top ten - including people’s choice - were all local winners. Not a single at large made it this year. Previous poster gave spot on advice about locals. Many are run by older folks that aren’t in touch with current trends, leaving the winner to her own devices for prep (or worse, prepping her incorrectly). Shawnee would be my first choice, followed by Clayland, then any new local that might pop up. Cleveland is in a bit of disarray, and they have too many girls to prep. Choose wisely. Good luck!
