According to various discussion on a web - it's not thememory size that is limited - it's a chip and layout of memory modules that is limited. Controller limited chips to the ones with a maxx refresh cycle of 2K. AFAIK there's no 128MB Dimm modules with 2K (as most recent DIMMs were using 4K).

That lead me to the conclusion that limiting factor is a number of slots not the controller itself.

Of course that just remains as unverified idea.
