The push-button problem is most likely to be a wiring loom issue - it's so easy to get a bad connection when you re-work those IDC connectors.

Given the 'popping' issue and the garbled screen issue, which seem to me to be distinctive PCC and VGA problems, I'd be inclined to reverse the VGA mod (patching the OS if required to work at 512 x 384- see threads in this Forum), and solve one problem at once!

Cure the popping - which _could_ be threatening the longevity of the CC - then go back to the VGA issue. Doing something a second time, for no obvious reason at all - sometimes cures the problem because a new solder joint is made etc etc.
