I read about the hassle between West and Hawass about two years ago in the National Geographic magazine I think.
I always wondered where is the problem in digging a small hole under the sphinx -- it apparently takes decades to get permission unless you are one of the established 'orthodox' archaeologists. Superstition, channeled knowledge, humbug or not, I am very much interested to learn if there is anything remarkable to be discovered under the Sphinx or if there are only empty halls or even nothing. As long as no one is granted permission to investigate this, we will never know. I have also read Edgar Cayce's readings mentioning the site about ten years ago and am still waiting for the thing been done.
Perhaps it is even good that nothing happens -- it looks as if there is going to be a lot of turmoil in this region soon. If, for instance, something special should be discovered under the Sphinx, and suddenly a new Middle East war should break out, the moderate Mubarak government will run in danger to get toppled, and I know that many Islamic fanatics will try to destroy these sites, being 'pre-islamic' = gentile, they are already after this with the Pyramids.
However, here are some links. There is plenty of this stuff on the Internet, these are just a small random selection:
