Subject: Loss of a Cherished Family Member

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Vice President Larry Fleming's Father, Dee C. Fleming this morning. Please keep the Fleming family in your thougts and prayers during this difficult time.

Dee C. Fleming, 101, passed easily into the arms of God April 16, 2020. Dee was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico on January 12, 1919 to D C and Viola Fleming. Dee graduated from Florence Union High School in Florence, Arizona in 1940.

Upon graduation, Dee’s good friend talked him into joining the Arizona National Guard for a period of three years and on September 2, 1940, he was renamed, Dee “Caesar” Fleming by the US Army. Just two weeks later, on September 16, 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt reclassified Dee’s National Guard unit, joining them into the elite 158th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Bushmasters. General Douglas MacArthur later proclaimed, “No greater combat team has ever deployed for battle.”

From his initial assignment he spent an active enlistment, going from Panama to Australia, to New Guinea, then north, clearing islands up to the Philippines and returning to the U.S. He was honorably discharged in June, 1945, with the rank of Tech Sergeant. He was decorated with the Pacific Theater Campaign ribbon, Philippine Liberation ribbon and two Bronze Stars. He was also awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge. Dee returned to Arizona where, on February 17, 1946, he married Beulah Myrtle Wells in Florence, Arizona. To this union, three children were born: Larry Dee Fleming, Daniel Keith Fleming and Ella Louise Fleming. Dee and Beulah moved to Pecos, Texas in 1956, then on to Goldthwaite, Texas in 1981. After being very active in their community and church, Beulah died in July, 1990. Dee married Betty Jean Scott, a beloved native of Goldthwaite, in November, 1991. Betty died in August, 2017. Dee, being unable to live by himself, took up residence at Goldthwaite Health & Rehabilitation Center shortly after Betty’s passing.

Dee was always a “doer” for anyone he could help. He built hand rails, wheel chair ramps, and yard gates for the folks getting up in age. His most loved project was helping start a cowboy church in Goldthwaite. After years of work, the church became Western Heritage Cowboy Church where he was an active and founding member and known to all as Papa Dee. With the help of friends and family, Dee continued as an active member, attending services as often as he could, until his death.

Dee is survived by his sister, Sybil Wilson, of Mesa, Arizona, and his brother, Dwain Fleming and wife, Connie, of Conyers, Georgia, his sons Larry Fleming and wife, Martha, of Glen Rose, Texas, Danny Fleming and wife, Julie, of Pecos, Texas and his daughter Ella Louise Fleming and spouse, Marilyn Kay Blanton, of Dallas, Texas, stepsons Richard Scott and wife Peggy, of Cedar Park, Texas and Rodney Scott of Belton, Texas. He is also survived by grandchildren Andra Fleming Mayberry and husband, Brandon, of Glen Rose, Texas, Marissa Fleming McWaters of Pflugerville, Texas, Alan Fleming and wife, Shannon, of Llano, Texas, Amanda Fleming Monroe and husband, David, of Houston, Texas, Elena Scott Hammonds, of Longview, Texas and Brett Scott of Kyle, Texas, Katie Scott, of Denton, Texas, and Connor Scott of Temple, Texas as well as 16 beloved great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Western Heritage Cowboy Church, P O Box 1034 Goldthwaite, Texas 76844.
