    Forgive And Forget?
    I went, you went and
    So did thousands of other!
    Many never returned, yet there
were scores that refused to go!
They fled to the four corners of earth,
    cowardly refusing to serve.
That jungle war was fifty years ago.
    Some say forgive and forget!
I will forgive and forget when
hell freezes over and the sun
    burns out!

  • This day at Phu Cat -- Steven Hall (Hall), Fri, Mar 06 2020, 9:08:14 PST (162-204-122-62.lightspeed.irvnca.sbcglobal.net/162.204.122.62)
I noticed this on the VSPA Homepage:
1970, Phu Cat, USAF LOD 1: Park, Irving Geon, Sgt., 37th SPS, K-9. Non-Hostile: Gunshot.
    1970, Phu Cat, USAF LOD 1: Galloway, Melvin R., Amn., 388th SPS. Non-Hostile: Self-destruction.

Question for anyone who was there on March 6, 1970:
Was this one of those unfortunate situations where an SP accidentally shot his friend and couldn't live with the thought so he shot himself out of grief?

    Gents,

VSPA's website is upgrading to a Secure Server (https://). The “Not Secure” warning does not indicate that your computer or the site you are visiting is affected by malware. Note that some websites may only support secure HTTPS connections on some pages, but not all; in these cases you may see the “Not Secure” warning on only the insecure pages.

During the next few days, VSPA.com may contain broken links, or be off line until our required "Certificate"is approved, and revised coding is completed.

  • THANK YOU MESSAGE FROM PAT THRONEBURG -- Steve Gattis, Thu, Feb 13 2020, 9:29:34 PST (host-67-44-224-14.hnremote.net/67.44.224.14)
The VSPA received the following message from Pat Throneburg:

My family and I are most grateful and thankful for your care and your generosity.

Robert was so proud and so happy to be a member of VSPA. Like so many who served during the Vietnam war, he was pushed aside by some neighbors, and even by some "friends" when he returned to the states. I remember our next door neighbors refusing to allow our oldest son, Brian, to play with their son (both 2 years old!) because Robert had fought in that war.

Being an member of VSPA finally gave him the ability to accept what he went through as something good and honorable instead of something inhuman. It changed not only Robert, but our entire family for the good.

    Thank you,
    Pat Throneburg

  • REQUEST FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR ROBERT THRONEBURG'S FAMILY -- STEVE GATTIS, Sat, Feb 08 2020, 15:53:36 PST (host-67-44-224-14.hnremote.net/67.44.224.14)
I am writing to you on behalf of Robert Throneburg’s family with the hope that his close friends and VSPA brothers might be able to assist his family with cremation expenses. Bob is VSPA Life Member #875. He will also be listed at Life Member #111 with all of his brothers who were KIA and those VSPA members who have stood their final Guardmount. He served in the 377th Air Police Squadron with K9 NEMO at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in 1966-67.

VSPA President Jerry Nelson has been in touch with Robert’s family. His son Brian has advised us that due to medical bills and other financial issues, the family is having a great deal of difficulty paying the $3,200 for Robert’s cremation. Medical bills for Robert’s hospitalization have made the family near destitute. For those of you who have met Bob and his wife Patricia at VSPA reunions, you know that they had custody of their great granddaughter, Elizabeth, something that reflected their deeply personal and loving commitment to family.

Bob will be cremated at a cost of $3,200. Donations to cover his funeral expenses will be processed through the VSPA as tax deductible donations and then paid directly to the funeral home for the cremation expenses. Donations for Bob’s cremation and funeral expenses will relieve some very intense financial pressure on his family.

Please make your donations payable to the

    Vietnam Security Police Association

and mail them to our Treasurer, Richard Garcia.

You may also use PayPal through our web site at the following link:

    http://www.vspa.com/vspa-dues.htm

Please click on the DONATE button. Then send an email to Richard Garcia at cal400@optonline.net advising him of the donation for Robert Throneburg’s cremation expenses.

Thank you very much for remembering Bob and taking care of his family. We take care of our own. In brotherhood, I send my best to you. Steve

The following is the VSPA Citation to accompany the Warrior’s Medal of Valor that was presented to Robert by the VSPA at our 2014 Reunion in Shreveport, Louisiana when we visited Barksdale AFB:

Robert Throneburg, Life Member #875 – For Valor under fire. Robert arrived at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in October of 1966 and was assigned to K9. Just after midnight on the morning of December 4, 1966, a large force of Viet Cong attacked Tan Son Nhut. Approximately 60 mortar rounds hit the base, and a Viet Cong guerilla force estimated to have included more than 75 saboteurs infiltrated the base perimeter. Three members of the 377th Air Police Squadron were killed defending Tan Son Nhut Air Base during this attack: A2C George M. Bevich, Jr., A2C John M. Cole, and A2C Oliver Riddle. Three sentry dogs, Cubby (612E), Toby (206F), and Rebel (519X), were also killed. Fifteen American servicemen were wounded but thousands of lives were saved. When daylight returned, a sweep of the base was conducted. Unfortunately, K-9 teams were not included in the daylight patrols.
The enemy attackers had been forced to hide and wait for nightfall before they could try to escape. Just before total darkness fell again that night, Sentry Dog Nemo (A534) and his handler, newly promoted A2C Robert A. Throneburg were posted on Kilo-5. Suddenly, Nemo alerted and Throneburg released him to attack the Viet Cong, who had evaded detection throughout the day. Nemo took on two of them, taking both to the ground but a shot was fired and Nemo went down. Nemo had been shot through his muzzle; the bullet destroyed his sinus area and exited his right eye. Throneburg opened fire but was overwhelmed by the force of the attack – he, too, was shot and fell to the ground.
Other Air Police eventually arrived on the scene, and even though grievously wounded, Nemo would not let any of them near A2C Throneburg. Nemo continued to protect A2C Throneburg as he had been trained, and shielded his handler from anyone trying to approach the team. Nemo’s previous handler, A2C Leonard Bryant, was quickly summoned to the scene of the attack and was able to secure Nemo and transport him to the kennels. Robert subsequently received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star w/V for valor. The story does not end there. As many of you know, Nemo was saved and traveled throughout the United States with VSPA member, then Captain Robert Sullivan (Lt Col, retired). A2C Throneburg was transported to a base hospital for urgent care of his wounds and evacuated to a hospital in Japan where he recovered from his wounds. The Air Force did not notify his wife, Patricia, because he had not been killed. She heard about the attack on radio and television, and later learned that Robert and Nemo had both been wounded when she was contacted by a local radio station and asked for comments. Therefore,
The Warrior’s Medal of Valor of the
Native American Nations of the United States of America
    is presented to Robert Throneburg
    October 11, 2014 Shreveport, Louisiana

FUNERAL AND MEMORIAL SERVICE INFORMATION FOR ROBERT THRONEBURG: The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at Blakely Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at The Episcopal Church of the Incarnation with Reverend Jenny Gettys officiating.

If you live in the area and can attend, the family would be honored to have you at their side. They send their love and thanks for your generous assistance to help pay Bob’s cremation and funeral expenses.

This date in 1969, I was posted in Tower Kilo 7alpha. Right around dusk, I had a strong premonition that something, not-so-good was going to happen. About 20 minutes later, automatic weapons fire was exchange between the ARVN listening position about 400 yards out, to the tower's left and the sappers, who were about 200 yards out and 200 yards to the tower's right. I'd never been that close to smalls arms fire so it rattled me pretty good, especially since I was alone in the tower (or maybe I wasn't). Anyway, more bursts of gunfire were exchanged between the two positions before the ARVN mortar crew sent out about a half dozen 60mm rounds, killing two of the VC. The rest of them Di-Di-ed. They were trying to get into the Paddy Control compound (the delta's air traffic control center) that was right on the inside of the perimeter road, about 300 yards south of the K-7a tower. The sappers were trying to use the diversion of the shift change to get through fences and into the compound when the vehicle gates were wide open. It makes me wonder how many times the VC sent sappers into that area to watch and record the activities so they could plan out the attack. I think what surprised me about the incident was how quickly I calmed down during the exchange of fire. At first I was really scared, then once I realized I wasn't receiving fire, I calmed down and continued to make field phone reports to CSC. None-the-less, once I got relieved from the post, I went back to the barracks and reviewed the incident with a friend, John Barleycorn.

    My Soul to Take...
... caused the dust to flurry...

    (c) 2020, by Don Poss

Have you ever witnessed a soul to fly
Where spirit’s wings caused the dust to flurry...
    Life’s vessel in lasting repose?

Have you wondered where the life force journies ...
When the eyes dim to naught?
Or why the spirit sometimes lingers,
    Urging life to fight?

Or do you believe in never-after, and there’s no-thing to fear or hope for, when all is lost to this earth and the body says goodbye; no bright light will shine your path ... no loved departed to meet you in the ever-last ... no Creator your soul to take, or those who honored your life to pray? No Otherside with warriors waiting to Welcome Home....

Then what purpose served your life just past, when all who knew you have breathed their last—
    No heaven...
    No hell...
    Reaper rings the bell,
    Toll’s peal, you never heard,
alas remains are gone to ashes scattered by whom...the eons know not.

Well, the Airport Management at Pease International Airport has finally succeeded in closing down the Pease Greeters. After nearly 15years of greeting troops has come to a close. Management is claiming the Federal branches are on them about lack of Security. About two weeks ago there were five Portsmouth Police Officers present for a flight but none of the Security personnel from the airport. No longer will the greeters be notified in advancs of incoming flights. We can no longer set up tables with coffee, donuts and other items available for the troops. There is no commercial outlets except vending machine for the troops.
We are allowed to meet the flights but that is all. This will eventually affect the Care Package program where the Greeters have been shipping about a ton of goodies to troops each year. Needless to say the Greeters are very unhappy about this. Hope all is well with the membership and sisterhood. Bud Owens, Binh-Thuy, 66/67.

  • A Reunion after 50 years -- Hector Tamos, Mon, Dec 09 2019, 8:40:04 PST (NoHost/172.58.155.183)
To our brothers & sisters of the VSPA. Just completed a 3 day reunion in Toronto Canada with Alfred R. Warr formerly of Warren, Ohio. Al served with quite a few of us, first in Danang then Binh Thuy, from Feb. 69 to Feb. 70. It has been a walk back to 50 years of fleeting memories since Al was part of the trac SAT and big brother to me & Donald Ashby at BTAB. We’ve been in touch over the years and I always tried to encourage him to join VSPA but his need for dialysis, and other health complications have kept him home bound except for trips to the Buffalo NY VA Hospital. This past February Al lost his dear wife of 48 years and his two sons and two granddaughters decided to find a way to positively purpose his days. Knowing we had a special bond, they copied my contact info and informed me that he had moved to the top of the list for a donated kidney and would pay for my trip from Myrtle Beach to Toronto. After conferring with Yolanda, and looking to when we could both make the trip, she encouraged me to go alone so we could fully enjoy the time together. I declined any reimbursement for my ticket as I got a good deal and all was set.
On 12/6 Saturday morning, after spending the night at his sons’ Carlo’s house, a bunch of family members showed up at his house and his granddaughter‘s Jada and Brianna announced that they had a Christmas gift for him but it would have to be returned by Monday.
“Surprise Al you’re buying dinner tonight for everyone”, I proclaimed. Some long hugs and tears were shed, then happiness all around. Yolanda was sent a short video and commented that seeing the emotion and love we Vietnam vets share is really something special.
Al wants to thank all for the IM well wishes & the phone calls he’s received.
I’m quoting him directly as he was cooking one of his wife’s Italian recipes for our dinner yesterday afternoon:
“I’ve had a lot of surprises in my life, but never one as great as this to see my brother Hector to be presented with a VSPA life membership, my gratitude to Yolanda for letting my brother come to visit and see a down but not out Vietnam Brother. I give grace to god, for letting me reunite after 50 yrs”.
Hopefully after he has the kidney transplant and recovery he’ll be able to join us at our 2020 Reunion. Email me if you remember Al and you’d like to give him a call. I’m posting this to our BB but feel free to share on the Facebook page as I’m currently not in the Group. Wishing all a Merry Christmas, a Prosperous and Healthy New Year

  • Expand Agent Orange Benefits -- JAIME A. LLERAS - BINH THUY 1970, Sat, Nov 23 2019, 9:01:41 PST (125.133-pool-xdsl-mi.sccoast.net/66.153.133.125)
Schumer cites Perrysburg vet in bid to expand Agent Orange benefits –
Published November 12, 2019, by Jerry Zremski, The Buffalo News.

WASHINGTON – Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer Tuesday took to the Senate floor to cite the story of a veteran from Perrysburg as an example of why the Trump administration ought to expand federal benefits to more vets exposed to the deadly defoliant Agent Orange during the Vietnam War.

A day after The Buffalo News profiled Dick Gabel, who is suffering from leukemia, Schumer mentioned him while arguing that the Trump administration should expand the number of diseases that qualify for federal benefits connected with Agent Orange exposure. Leukemia is one of 14 diseases for which veterans qualify for such benefits, but the administration has opposed expanding the list to include other conditions that scientists have linked to Agent Orange.

"There are likely thousands and thousands of veterans in New York like Dick, who are fighting illnesses directly linked to Agent Orange and their military service in Vietnam," Schumer, a New York Democrat, said. "But because they got the wrong disease, the Trump administration is blocking their health benefits."

The Military Times reported last month that based on scientific research, former Veterans Secretary David Shulkin decided in 2017 that veterans suffering from bladder cancer, Parkinson’s-like symptoms and hypothyroidism should also be eligible for Agent Orange benefits. The move would have made 83,000 additional veterans eligible for disability benefits. But Mick Mulvaney, then director of the Office of Management and Budget and now President Trump's acting chief of staff, objected.

Based on emails obtained by a veteran under the Freedom of Information Act, the Military Times story indicated that Mulvaney worried about the cost of expanding the Agent Orange benefit program and the effect of any expansion on existing veterans’ disability benefits. In addition, the Military Times said Mulvaney had doubts about the scientific evidence behind the proposed benefits expansion.

As your Service Officer and an affected veteran, I ask each of you to connect our congressional members and ask them to support the passing of such legislation NOW! As many of us feel, especially our brothers that served in Thailand, this is disgraceful and unacceptable!

We (10) were housed together in a large French style Villa compound at 181 TMK street, Saigon & reported directly to the Embassy Security Officer for daily duty assignments. I only knew the other SPs by first name (Barry, Dan, Lee, Russ. Terry, & ????) so I have no way to track them down or make contact. New Presumptive Conditions Under Consideration

Did you know the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is considering adding five new suspected conditions to its list of illnesses that are caused by exposure to Agent Orange?

VA has recognized a number of different cancers and other health problems related to Agent Orange exposure and other herbicides used around veterans during their military service. When and if the new diseases under consideration are included on the presumptive list, veterans and their survivors may be eligible for benefits and compensation for the new conditions.

The new health conditions related to Agent Orange exposure under consideration by the VA include: bladder cancer, Parkinsonism, hypothyroidism, stroke and hypertension.

Former VA Secretary, David Shulkin said, “After thoroughly reviewing the National Academy of Medicine latest report … I have made a decision to further explore new presumptive conditions for service connection that may ultimately qualify for disability compensation.”

    HELLO TO ALL ~

Yesterday was the deadline for submission of our 2019 reunion registration forms to the Reunion BRAT. Based upon the number of hotel registrations, over 100 people are LATE sending in their registration forms. I discussed this with the Reunion BRAT and she will continue to accept late registrations. However, due to the late and missing registrations, she will have to delay the reunion confirmations until she can send a mass mailing on or about September 16. Registrations received after the 16th will receive their confirmation at the reunion. Her work for us is labor intensive in her office and then she must mail all welcome packages to our hotel.

Your registrations are critical for planning and preparation. The Reunion BRAT uses the information that you provide to complete our Entry Authorization List for Andrews AFB. She also uses the information to prepare your reunion identifications, labels for your reunion welcome packages, and rosters for you that will be in the welcome packages. All of these items must be printed and stuffed into the welcome packages along with all meal and event tickets that she designs and prints for us. The most critical need for those forms is to finalize ALL CONTRACTS AND PLANS FOR BUSES AND MEALS. She must pay thousands of dollars to the hotel in ADVANCE for all meals. Your Board of Directors also has several logistics issues that use the information as we plan special events and coordinate with Andrews AFB, order reunion pins and commemorative items for our 25th Anniversary. We have been planning for over a year; however, the people we coordinate with need final numbers. Please help us help you have a great reunion.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE MAIL IN YOUR REGISTRATIONS! DO NOT DELAY!

IF YOU HAVE NOT MADE YOUR HOTEL RESERVATIONS, TIME IS RUNNING OUT. MAKE THOSE RESERVATIONS NOW. THERE ARE MANY OTHER EVENTS IN THE AREA THAT NEED HOTEL ROOMS. TO RECEIVE OUR PREFERRED CONTRACT REDUCED RATE, CONTACT THE HOTEL NOW.

THANK YOU. YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS LOOKS FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN WASHINGTON, D.C. AS WE RETURN TO THE WALL FOR OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY.

    WELCOME HOME!

He also readily makes himself available by phone to all who may need help . If you live in or plan to be visiting the Washington, DC area on Saturday, August 24th, please join Eagle Chapter, AF Security Forces Association, as they wash the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial (The Wall).

We meet at 06:30am, at the flag pole, by the Three Servicemen statue. You are encouraged to come a little early, so you have time to share a few war stories. We will finish by 08:00am (I promise), so you can have the rest of your day free.

I recommend parking on Henry Bacon Dr (near Lincoln Memorial) or on Constitution Ave at 21st Street (facing the Capitol and Washington Monument).

  • Film Review: Men In Black: International -- Don Poss, Wed, Jun 19 2019, 5:40:42 PDT (cpe-172-88-32-71.socal.res.rr.com/172.88.32.71)
Decided to get out of house and go see a movie. Not much playing, but I liked the original Men In Black (Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, and Linda Fiorentino), so thought Men In Black: International (with Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Kumail Nanjiani, Rebecca Ferguson) might be worth seeing at IMax.

Disappointing movie. The acting, wasn't, in that the actors mouthed their lines and seemingly wished they were anywhere else but in the film. Within ten minutes, I wished I was anywhere else (having a root-canal, contemplated joining my neighborhood watch colostomy-bag airburst clean up crew, getting my toe-nails manicured, asking the usher if this flight offered a pillow and blankie, wondering if I could remember where I parked the car). The bad-guys' "masks" were very good in design, but I found myself noting the costume quality of one of the characters utterly failed to make him look buffed, but did look like the poor-quality stuffed beanbag outfit the guy on the street corner twirling a sign was wearing. It was sort of funny, in that I almost smiled.

So, applying a line from one of Rush's audio spoofs (Tom Daschle) to this catastrophe, should your doc tell you that you have only two hours to live: go see Men In Black: International--it'll seem like a year. I'm fairly sure the dozen or so people in the theatre might agree, but bring your own pillow and blankie.

Parting advice to film Director F. Gary Gray: Add the laughing-audience soundtrack from an old M*A*S*H episode.

    Don Poss

    Hello to all.

I am very sad to notify you that Sheila Gervase-Cain’s younger brother, Thomas Gervase, age 59, passed away today In West Virginia. Thomas and his wife lived in Buffalo, New York near Sheila and Greg. Thomas was a U.S. Navy Veteran and a long-haul truck driver. He became very ill while on the road in West Virginia. He notified his wife and Sheila that he was in the hospital and that he would require surgery this morning. Sheila and her sister-in-law went to West Virginia to see Thomas and standby at the hospital while he had surgery. Sadly, Thomas did not survive the very serious surgery and passed away during surgery to remove a kidney. Sheila and her sister-in-law will take Thomas home to Buffalo tomorrow.

Your thoughts and prayers for Sheila, Greg and her family will be sincerely appreciated. More information will follow once they return to Buffalo.

    Hello to all.

Our Gold Star Mom, Rachel Helen “Mom” Lehman, has passed away. She left us at 97 years of age to be with her husband Millard Lehman Sr. and her son, Millard Lehman Jr. (KIA Binh Thuy, 6 July 1966) this morning at 1030. She passed away peacefully, knowing that she meant so much to all of us. Our Gold Star Sweetheart, Erlyce Pekas, visited with her yesterday to let her know how much we loved her. Mom was a courageous woman, with a calm sense of dignity that came with a wonderful sense of humor. She was tough, too, and had attended 15 of our reunions with Erlyce. In 2007, Mom stood on The Mall with us in Washington, D.C. in the cold staging area waiting to march in the parade so that she could honor our 111, and especially her son. As our Gold Star Mom, she marched up front with the 400 member VSPA formation, the largest unit in the parade to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of The Wall. I am so thankful for her and that we brought the reunion to her last year in Tucson. She will be missed. May God bless her and her family. Funeral arrangements are pending.

    Security Forces Spouses

Some Airmen who defend the Force
    Don't do it all alone
    There's often someone special
Keeping things on track back home

Those wives and husbands also serve
While mates go off to war
And many times they carry on
    Not knowing what's in store

They may not go to foreign lands
    Or carry guns or fight
But they have battles of their own
    And many sleepless nights

    Their courage and tenacity is
    Seldom recognized
Except by those who see it most
    Through grateful loving eyes

So here’s to those who wait at home
    Steadfast to ties that bind
For by their love and staunch support
They too, help hold the line.

I received the following text from Shayne Lehman today. “Hey Erlyce, I wanted to let you know that mom’s condition has deteriorated to being confined to a bed. She is so weak she can’t stand, and her memory is good for about a day now. Odds are good she is in her last month. Thought you would want to know. Shayne” ——————————————-

I’m with Mom now. Hospice is here taking her vitals and checking the places on her body that hurt, which are numerous. They are giving her morphine so they can do a more thorough checkup. We’ve been on a week-long vacation in Hawaii with our youngest daughter and family. We leave again on June 14 in our RV with plans to be gone the rest of the summer. I’m not sure what my plans would be if Rachel passes between mid-June and mid-August. We will see. For her sake, I wish this could be over. Myron begins his radiation treatment for prostate cancer in mid-August so he wanted to get in some special vacation time with our family before his treatment begins. The AZ summer heat has been bothering him more than it used to so a few months in northern Minnesota does him a world of good.

Thanks for loving Mom Lehman. Love, Erlyce

PS please notify anyone I’ve missed and you think wants to know.

    AUGUST 27, 1939 ~ APRIL 29, 2019 (AGE 79)

It is with a sad heart that we have to inform you of the passing of our longtime friend and brother of the badge, retired Sergeant Newell M. Swartz, Badge #2007. We are at a loss of words tonight. The Good Lord called Newell home on April 29, 2019 at about 8 PM and his passing was peaceful with his wife Maria and daughter Patti by his side, as well as retired Sergeant Randy Young #2084. Newell fought hard against the illnesses that claimed this strong man, his leukemia and the double pneumonia that struck him several weeks ago. He had been on a ventilator for the last weeks of his life and they removed it this afternoon. Newell served his country well, being a veteran of the United States Air Force and the United States Army, from which he retired after a full career. He went on to be an Officer with the Arizona Department of Public Safety when he became a member of DPS Class 29 in January 1977, graduating in April of that year. His first duty station was Casa Grande. After he was promoted to Sergeant, Newell served in both Highway Patrol Bureau and Criminal Investigations. He retired in January, 2002 after 25 years of service to the citizens of Arizona. In addition to his wife of 60 years, Maria, he is survived by his daughters Christine , Patti and son Brian. Cards of condolence can be sent to the family address at: 6408 S. 39th Place, Phoenix, AZ 85042 Newell will be missed by so many of his DPS family who have always held him in high regard. We will miss his trademark phrase "Listen up, Slick". Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this very sad time.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2019 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, with a Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:30pm, at Richardson Funeral Home, 2621 South Rural Road, Tempe, Arizona. Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 9:30am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 2121 South Rural Road, Tempe, Arizona. Burial, with full military honors, will take place on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 10:30am at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Arizona. Cards of condolence can be sent to the family address at: 6408 S. 39th Place, Phoenix, AZ 85042

It is with profound sorrow that I inform you of the passing of our Brother and former VSPA President Newell Swartz. Newell had been in the hospital for several weeks and made his eternal journey home last evening. He enlisted in the Air Force 1956 and spent 12 years in the Air Police. He was assigned to numerous locations, i.e., Forbes AFB, KS, with TDY's to England, Libya and Turkey. He met and married his wife, Maria, while assigned to Zaragoza, Spain. He was also assigned to the SAC Elite Guard at Offutt AFB, NE. He served in Vietnam at Phu Cat AB and Phan Rang AB. In 1968, he accepted an inter-service transfer to the Army. He ended his military career as a CW3 in 1976. He also retired as an Arizona Highway Patrol Sergeant in 2002. He held numerous positions with the AZ Highway Patrol, i.e., patrolman, criminal investigation squads in narcotics, organized crime, white collar crime, and motorcycle and prison gangs. He also served two years in Internal Affairs. Newell had a great heart and loved the VSPA. His service to our Association will always be remembered. Please pray for Maria and the children in this most difficult time. I will provide information about arrangements when received. Rest in Peace my Brother, you will certainly be missed.

Shayne Lehman, Mom's son, gave me permission to post his email on the VSPA Belletin Board. It is below. Erlyce
    =========================================================

    Tuesday, April 23, 2019

To friends and family of Rachel Helen Lehman

I’m writing to bring you up to date on the health of mom Lehman as you have indicated you would like to be included on her present well-being.

Some of you may not have known that mom, now 97, is on hospice, and living in an assisted living group home in Peoria, AZ. This because of an almost immediate loss of the ability to get around, and feed herself in the small manufactured home she lived in in Tucson. She also sustained Bell’s Palsy (face droop), in October which is affecting her vision, and she can’t see the face of the person right in front of her. A small sore on her neck which some of you saw back in November, has been identified as a solid mass, probably cancer, and appears to be invasive. It is getting larger and could be moving to other locations such as the brain or various arteries in that area. She is bleeding internally and externally from this sore and the problem of blood clots has been raised. To compound all of this, her heart appears to be getting weaker day by day.

The good thing to report, she is in good spirts, happy, and telling jokes. The only pains worth noting is occasional headaches, and she still likes to talk all day long. Her memory is getting a little weaker day to day, but she still will tell you her story, and probably tell you “she is really not even sick, not really.”

I wanted to let you know some of these issues she is having as both her doctor, and hospice nurse are not giving her very good odds within the next 30 to 90 days. If you were wanting to come by to see her, time is getting short.

If you need information on how to reach her, you can call me or better yet e-mail and I will give you that material. She still has her phone number but almost never picks up calls because she can’t see the phone to answer it and leaving a message will not work because she can’t work the controls on the phone. If you plan to visit, or call, remember that she is upbeat and feeling like life is moving on.

    Thank you,

    Shayne T Lehman

I finally reached Maria last evening after she returned from the hospital. Newell is still in ICU and continues to get stronger. He continues to fight an infection in his lungs and has a new Doctor helping with that. His is aware of what his going on and can communicate with Maria. He continues to have visitors and is excited when they visit. This appears to be a long fight and Maria believes he will recover and come home at some point. She tells Newell the VSPA is praying for their Brother and he is most appreciative of our support.

  • How To Claim Illnesses/Diseases due to Agent Orange -- JAIME A. LLERAS- BINH THUY '70, Tue, Apr 16 2019, 8:02:22 PDT (226.216-223-197-net.sccoast.net/216.223.197.226)
I’ve been reading more and more about claims of Agent Orange illnesses/ diseases submissions being denied. As a result (with possible decisions), several advisors are recommending veterans to use the term ‘herbicide dioxin’ as it related to the defoliant sprayed and handled in Vietnam and Thailand during the Vietnam War (1961-1971) commonly called Agent Orange.

Also, if a veteran had regular security duty or other duties on the fenced-in perimeters of a U.S. military base in Thailand or Royal Thai Air Force Bases between January 9, 1962, and May 7, 1975, he may have had contact with Agent Orange.

    Here’s a tit-bit of information:
    1) Many U.S., Australian, and New Zealand servicemen who suffered long exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam later developed a number of cancers and other health disorders. Despite the difficulty of establishing conclusive proof that their claims were valid, in 1979 U.S. veterans brought a class-action lawsuit against seven herbicide makers that produced Agent Orange for the U.S. military. The suit was settled out of court in 1984 with the establishment of a $180 million fund to compensate some 250,000 claimants and their families. Separately, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs awarded compensation to about 1,800 veterans.

I talked with Maria this morning and the report on Newell is better today. He continues to fight and he appears to be gaining strength. She said he was aware of two DPS officers, friends of his came to visit and Newell was very happy to see them. It seems this will be a long fight to regain his strength; however, she reported he is making progress. He does have an infection that the Doctors are working to overcoming it. She appreciates all the thoughts and prayers for Newell. Let’s keep lifting them up in our prayers.

Hello all, to those of you who have inquired about Mom's health. She has moved in to a group home in Peoria, AZ (suburb of Phoenix and near Sun City which is where her son, Shayne, lives.) Her health is poor and she is quite lonely. I know she would appreciate phone calls or cards if you have the time.

    Her phone is: 623-225-7078.

    Her street address is:

    Rachel Helen Lehman
    ANA & DAVID
    Assisted Living Home
    9632 W. Runion Drive
    Peoria, AZ 85382

Her son says as much as she would like to, she will not be able to attend the VSPA Reunion this year. She sends love and greetings to all. If you should happen to write to her or call her, please don't mention the reunion as I know it makes her sad to know she can't attend. She's also having some trouble remembering or recognizing people, which is understandable at her age.

    Warmly, from Erlyce

Due to medical conditions effecting Bill Marshall and his Bride, he felt it necessary to resign his position as Secretary of the VSPA. I talked with Bill and he does not feel he can give 100% of his time and effort to the organization and feels he needs to manage his issues. I told him how much his leadership for many years to our Association is appreciated and wished him the very best going forward. I, personally, am very sad to see him have to leave the Board after filling several positions for many years.

After reading the bylaws, I am happy to announce that Charlie Blood has volunteered to join our BOD and fill the remaining tenure on the BOD as Secretary. Charlie was a K-9 handler in Udorn AB, Thailand in 70-71. He handled K-9 Chris, #77M3 and is Life Member #372. I am delighted to have him on the BOD and very much look forward to working with him to make the VSPA even better. Please join me in welcoming him to the BOD at cblood@suddenlink.com.

FYI - For my Thailand brothers: Here's a piece of information addressing AO in Thailand. Hope this is helpful to some of you.
This information was found on the FaceBook Thailand Veterans Herbicide Exposure.

RE: Air Force Historical Research Agency Contact Form: TAKHLI RTAFB MASER PLAN MAP 68-69 SPINK, BARRY L GS-11 USAF AETC AFHRA/RS <barry.spink@us.af.mil> Wed 4/12/2017 1:26 PM

Agent Orange on Thailand Base Perimeter Fence, Base by Base.

Dear Ms. Miles, Your question is very broad-based.  Attached are my notes, base by base, on when herbicides were used.  Unfortunately, the specific names or chemical components were not discussed in the unit histories, only that 'herbicides' were approved/procured.  Sometimes they used contaminated diesel fuel....

Here are the dates and places for herbicide use in Thailand on USAF installations:

Although the tactical herbicide Agent Orange was never used at any USAF installation in Thailand for vegetation control, non-tactical, commonly referred to as 'commercial-grade,' herbicides were used at some USAF installations at specific times.  Here is the list of commercial herbicide use at USAF base perimeters in Thailand, and the dates of their use:
    Korat    Apr-Dec 1972 and Oct-Dec 1973
    Nakhon Phanom   Jul-Aug 1971
Takhli     Apr-Sep 1969 (mostly around the ammo dump, perimeter towers and the ends of runways)
Ubon   22 Jun 1970 for a period of about four weeks, then again in Jan 1971
    U-Tapao    Oct 1971-Mar 1972 and Jul-Sep 1972

Thailand USAF bases that have no record of ever using any herbicides for vegetation control:
Udorn Don Muang Ko Kha Air Station Mukdahan Air Station Chiang Mai Air Station Warin Air Station Roi-Et Air Station

    Sincerely,
Barry L. Spink Archivist Air Force Historical Research Agency

    Hello to all.

VSPA President Jerry Nelson has requested that I send out the following information:

Jerry is out of town and away from the Internet until Friday, March 15. The Reunion BRAT has been working to add additional rooms to the period three days before and three days after the reunion at the hotel’s reunion rate of $139. The hotel has reported that more rooms have been reserved before and after the reunion than expected, which is why some people found it difficult to make reservations for those days over the weekend. While that has been corrected, the rooms three days before and TWO days after the reunion are available at the reunion rate. However, the third night after the reunion (October 15th ) is sold out at the reunion rate based upon space availability. It is possible that the person who wants an additional night on the 15th may have to move to a different room at a different rate.

The hotel and the Reunion BRAT are working on this issue. If you have any problems, please give the Reunion BRAT a call at (360) 663-2521.

We hope to see you in Washington, D.C.

    My best to you.

    HR-566 & S-332
    AGENT ORANGE EXPOSURE FAIRNESS ACT

Three illnesses believed to be caused by contact with Agent Orange, under VA rating regulations, must be at least 10% disabling within 1 year of contact of herbicides.

    1. Chloracne - skin condition, skin rash, looks like acne, appears anywhere on the body anytime, lesions often found behind the years, armpits, groin region are itchy and get red hot.
    2. Peripheral Neuropathy - illness of the nervous system that causes numbness, tingling of hands, feet and legs, weakness of muscles, loss of coordination and loss of reflexes.
    3. Porphyria Cutanea Tarda - a rare illness that can make your liver stop working correctly, can cause your skin to thin, blister & scar, changes in pigmentation when in the sun and excessive hair growth.

Congress of the United States, the national institutes of Health and the President of the United States to amend the 38 CFR, 3.309 and USC116 to eliminate onset dates for the presumptive diseases. Certain limitations were placed on the aforementioned diseases, establishing unreasonable and punitive onset dates resulting in loss of earned disability compensation. Therefore we ask our elected and appointed officials to remedy this wrong and award earned benefits through the Department of Veteran Affairs.

How could we request treatment when we didn't ever hear about Agent Orange until after 1978, when most of us had been discharged by then? How can the Government put an end date on an illness?

Call or contact your house & senate reps to ask them to co-sponsor this bill and bring justice to our veterans! Go to congress.gov type in S332 &/or HR-566 to see the bill.

This information come from the DAV National Commander & DAV National Legislative Commander.

    ACTION ALERT:

Please Submit a Comment to Oppose Co-payments for Disabled Veterans!

VA recently proposed a regulation to establish a new Urgent Care (Walk-in) health benefit as part of implementing the VA MISSION Act. While we strongly support an Urgent Care (Walk-in) benefit (DAV Resolution No. 075) for enrolled veterans, we strongly oppose VA’s proposal to charge service-connected disabled veterans a copayment of $30 per urgent care visit, beginning with the 4th visit in any calendar year.

Our unwavering position (DAV Resolution No. 276) is that veterans have earned free medical care – without copayments – for the care of wounds, injuries and illnesses related to their military service. While the MISSION Act allows VA to impose copayments, it does not mandate copayments on service-connected veterans, and we believe VA would be wrong to do so.

The proposed regulation is now open for public comment, but it has a shortened comment period that will end this coming Monday, March 4, 2019.

If you agree that disabled veterans should never be charged copayments for care related to their military service, please join us in submitting a public comment on this proposed regulation.

You can submit your comments to this webpage:

    www.regulations.gov/comment?D=VA-2019-VHA-0003-0001

In your own words, briefly indicate that you oppose copayments for disabled veterans and then explain why and how copayments would negatively affect you, your loved ones or friends.

Thank you for taking the time to join us in opposing copayments on service-connected veterans for the new VA Urgent Care benefit.

    FYI ----

    February 2019

Beware of VA’s Desire To Reduce Compensation Benefits
    By USVCP Staff

A thorough review of disability examinations are often requested by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to check the severity of service-connected disabilities. VA regulations point out specific timelines for “examination checks,” but, it is not a hard and fast rule, and, oftentimes, ignored by VA personnel. But, rest assured, it will happen at some point.

By law, VA should and will request a review exam under the following circumstances:
    • VA needs to assess the severity of a disability;
    • Additional or more relevant evidence indicates there has been an important and significant (or material) change in a disability; or
    • Because of law, VA personnel are required to conduct a periodic review.
VA staff use review exams, and any other relevant evidence, to assess the severity of a disability.

    The Examination Process
Oftentimes, a contracted medical professional or VA medical professional will conduct the disability review exam. The medical examiners and staff will not answer specific questions about benefits, pension program or compensation. Nor, will they consult with a veteran about the disability compensation process. Acting as a stoic conduit within strict bureaucratic protocol, the medical examiners methodically go through a set of procedures to assess disability conditions.

Typically, the examination is conducted in a medically approved facility, with the veteran and medical staff member. In very rare cases, VA personnel may decide that an examination by telephone would be the most appropriate route.

The Role of The Medical Examiner
The medical examiner will often conduct the following procedures:
    • Ask a veteran questions related to the disability in question;
    • Perform a physical exam related to the disability;
    • If multiple disability conditions are to be examined the medical examiner will conduct one examine at-a-time;
    • Send the veteran for lab work, which may include: blood work, X-rays, MRI, etc.;
    • While conducting exam, the medical examiner will pay very close attention to how the veteran reacts to certain procedures;
    • At the conclusion of the exam, sometimes the medical examiner is required to go over the veterans medical file with him/her;
    • In some instances, if the veteran is accompanied by someone familiar with the disability the veteran is having examined, the medical examiner may ask that person questions related to the disability being examined.

Important to understand that the medical examiner is not involved in making a rating decision about the disability. The medical examiners’ job is simply to conduct the examination based upon certain set of criteria established by VA. However, the words the examiner uses in describing the examination review, may ultimately affect the thinking of the VA rater and how a disability is to be perceived.

The medical examiner may select words and sentence structures that may be perceived in a way that a reduction in compensation benefits is necessary, or that an increase is appropriate or no change at all is necessary.

    Updated Decision
Based on a thorough review of the disability examined, VA raters may issue a new or updated medical decision and contact the veteran by mail. After the decision has been made, VA will do 1 of 3 possible outcomes:
    • The veteran’s disability rating will remain unchanged;
    • It was concluded that the disability has worsened and an increase in compensation benefits may be approved. If not approved for an increase it will be annotated in a veteran’s disability file that an increase was not warranted, but the worsening of the disability condition has been recorded and recognized;
    • The disability has improved significantly enough that a reduction in compensation benefits may be appropriate at this time.

    Never Miss An Appointment
If a veteran misses a review exam, it may negatively affect the outcome of any potential increase in compensation benefits. The veteran should always call their VA Regional Office (VARO) to reschedule their appointment as soon as reasonably possible once they realize they won’t make it to the scheduled review exam. Harsh, but true, if a veteran misses an exam without details as to why, VA may be required by law to propose an immediate reduction in the disability that was to be examined or an immediate termination of compensation benefits for that specific disability.

  • Final Guardmount For Lew Goldberg -- Steve Gattis, Wed, Jan 02 2019, 19:39:04 PST (h143.162.91.75.dynamic.ip.windstream.net/75.91.162.143)
    Hello to all.

I am deeply saddened to report that Aaron Lew Goldberg, Life Member #150, passed away this morning at his home in Middleton, Wisconsin. He served at Binh Thuy Air Base, Vietnam in 1968-69. Lew was 81 years old and would have been 82 on January 7th.

Lew’s granddaughter, Shelby Starke, contacted the VSPA Sisterhood President, Sheila Cain, and me today to give us the news that Lew had stood his final Guardmount at home after being ill over Christmas and the New Year. The family is in touch with a funeral home in Wisconsin where they will meet privately like they did last year for his wife Scotti when she passed away. Lew will be interred in South Dakota with Scotti. No other services are planned at this time.

For those of you who never met Lew, he and Scotti attended our reunions together for many many years. The last several years they brought Shelby along with them so that she could experience the love of our brotherhood and sisterhood. Shelby works in law enforcement and immediately formed bonds with the VSPA that will last a lifetime, first volunteering to suit-up and run from a military working dog during a demo. Lew and Scotti were so proud of her. Lew was our first coordinator for the Defenders who were stationed at Binh Thuy Air Base. He found many of our members from Binh Thuy, made sure that they knew about the VSPA and always made certain that they had reunion information. He also coordinated 632nd Security Police Squadron dinners for his Binh Thuy brothers while at the reunion. He loved to talk about baseball and the autographs that he had collected. He also shared stories of his career that started in 1956 with Air Police training at Parks AFB, California. He served in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Vietnam, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Alaska and South Dakota, eventually retiring as a Tech Sergeant in Washington, D.C. in 1976.

Stories and comments about Lew and Scotti would be appreciated by Shelby on Facebook and/or the VSPA Bulletin Board. She sends her love to all of you with thanks for all of the wonderful notes and comments sent to Lew after Scotti passed away. They meant so much to her and her Grandpa, Lew.

In brotherhood and fond memories of Lew, I send my best to all of you.

    Steve

I received the following Message from Erlyce about Mom Lehman:
    Hi everyone,

Just a note to let you know that Mom Lehman is currently in Banner Boswell Hospital in Sun City, AZ. She has pneumonia but as of today she seems to be improving and may be released soon. Her son, Shayne, was notified about a week ago by a caregiver in Tucson that Mom wasn't feeling well. Of course, he stayed on touch with her and when it was clear that she wasn't getting better, he went to Tucson and brought her back to Phoenix and his home. When her condition didn't improve, the doctors hospitalized her.

Along with others, I was able to spend several hours with her while Shayne and Syndi visited several assisted living or group homes. This latest illness has really solidified the reality that Mom cannot live alone any more. She's not happy about moving, but I think she is resigned to it and trying to make the best of her situation. She knows Shayne is trying to make things safe and easier for her.

As soon as the hospital can release her and all necessary tests and paperwork can be completed, she can move in there. She's become very weak and cannot walk unaided. I don't have the address yet or the name of the place, but I will let you know when I do. Shayne has closed her Tucson address but is having all of mom's mail sent to him. His address is; she will not be returning to her home in Tucson.

    Rachel Helen Lehman
    % Shayne & Syndi Lehman
    12035 N. Sun City Drive
    Sun City, AZ 85351

Mom still has the same phone number and it is 520-591-2912. She is now well enough to take phone calls and I know she would welcome them.

Blessings to all of you and please forward this to anyone you think would like to know. I'm sure I've forgotten some, and I do apologize for that. I did try to post this on the vspa BB but couldn't get in. Paul, if you would put my "Mom message" on the BB for me, I'd appreciate it.

    Hugs, Erlyce

    FYI - Contact Your Representatives.
I had an appeal in for over 3-years for 1) Heading loss; 2) Neuropathy of my hands and; 3) PTSD. After sending a letter to my House Representative for assistance on finding out why my claim has taken so long. His staff responded to me within 1-week. A week later, they sent me a letter stating that the VA said my claim was in process.

Well, I took that as a 'boilerplate' response and dismissed their help. However, a month later, I received a call from the VA telling me I needed to go to three C&Ps, one for each of my appeals. I attended each C&P, which actually went very good.

One month later, I received a letter from the VA stating that my my Neuropathy of my hands and my PTSD claim was approved dating back to 2015. As a result of the help from my House Representative, I am now 80% rated. A Super Christmas gift for me.

My propose of this note is that you should not give-up and if necessary, contact you Congressional Representatives for help.
    Take Care & Stay Healthy.

Moe was a fellow USAF Security Policeman who served in Thailand and with Richard, Donald and me while stationed in Bangor Maine in 1970. My heart sank when another brother texted me about his untimely death and the pain it has caused his grandson & family. Moe was a good guy, he served OUR Country honorably eventually to die by the hand of hatred. I guess we can say there was no “Welcome Home” for another one of our own. Rest In Peace, my brother.

  • Reunion 2019 and Reunion 2020 -- Steve Gattis, Wed, Oct 10 2018, 17:24:46 PDT (71-93-213-66.dhcp.lnbh.ca.charter.com/71.93.213.66)
    Hello to all.

The reunion location for 2019 will be Washington, D.C. and Andrews AFB, Maryland.

The reunion location for 2020 will be Colorado Springs. There are three AFB facilities in the area: AF Academy, Peterson AFB and Schiever AFB. We will be in contact with the SF squadrons for each facility as we plan for the 2020 reunion.

We do know that there will be some significant events in and around the Academy that may conflict. Therefore, we also chose a backup location in case the bases cannot support us in Colorado Springs. The backup location is Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, New Mexico. If the dates for the balloon festival conflict that year in Albuquerque, we also selected a third location at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. We will keep you posted as we know more.

    My best to you.
    Steve Gattis
