Subject: VSPA Reunion Update

My Brothers and Sisters of the Vietnam Security Police Association,

I hope this update finds all of you doing well during this very difficult and extended period time of quarantine and social distancing. As we remain steadfast in our ongoing struggle with the constantly evolving Covid-19 Pandemic, we will carry on with our plans for our 2020 reunion in Colorado Spring, CO. Your Board of Directors (BOD) continues to hold conference calls attempting to keep updated on developments and making recommendations on how we proceed.
However, the following information has also influenced our planning: The Air Force Academy is currently closed to all except active duty personnel, retired military personnel and DOD civilians. In talking with personnel at the Academy, they are considering potentially opening on May 31, depending on the status of the virus. Other bases are also closed to visitors and have required many personnel to telecommute from home in order to minimize exposure to COVID-19. Our effort to monitor information nationally makes it difficult to make a final decision regarding the reunions as things seem to change almost every day. Therefore, we are in a holding pattern so that we can wait and see if the CDC will provide information that will allow the Air Force Academy, our hotel and the airlines to return to normal operations.
At this time, the thoughts of your BOD are to wait and see what takes place in the next couple of months. As America opens back up, our daily lives will hopefully get back to normal. We are still five months away from the date of our reunion. I can assure you that we will only proceed with the reunion if there is no danger to our membership. While we do have a clause that allows us to cancel due to something like the Covid-19 Pandemic, we are far too early to engage that clause. We still are recommending that no one make hotel or airline reservations until we can gain more information and decide on our final position. Your BOD will have another conference call very soon.
I continue to ask for your patience in allowing us to monitor the situation so we can make an informed decision. This is a difficult decision and one that will not be made without serious consideration on how it will affect our membership. I want all of us to be able to safely travel to Colorado and have a great time at our 26th VSPA reunion without risk to our health.
For now, I also want to warn you regarding scams that target fears related to the Corona Virus or COVID-19. One Facebook scam targets seniors with a phony grant or loan to “help pay medical bills” by providing a link to the “U.S. Emergency Grants Federation”. The link will take you to an official looking “government” page that will ask for your social security number and other personal information. DON’T DO IT! Robo calls, fake cures, fake charities, email scams and a variety of other scams are working to gather your personal information to gain access to your bank account. Others will solicit gift cards for charities. DON’T DO IT! While we must remain vigilant to these scams that target people in our age group, we must also stay healthy, safe, avoid health risks and follow all of the recommendations from the CDC. I will keep you posted as we move forward.

Jerry Nelson, President
Vietnam security Police Association
