Subject: 2020 REUNION UPDATE

Hello, Dear Brothers and Sisters of the VSPA.

Our president, Jerry Nelson, has asked me to send a reunion update to you. He asked me to assure you that we are very concerned with all of the COVID-19 virus issues and the problems with civil unrest throughout our country. We are monitoring virus spikes on a daily basis and tracking problems associated with demonstrations. We are also in touch with the Air Force Academy and our hotel to evaluate current COVID-19 social distancing restrictions and the impact that they may have on our reunion.

Your Board of Directors is concerned for your health and safety. We had a conference call last week to discuss the 2020 Reunion and all of the concerns that we have. We resolved to hold off making a decision about the reunion until the first week of July so that we would hopefully have more definitive information before we decide to move forward with the reunion or postpone the reunion in Colorado Springs until 2021. If we have to cancel for 2020, your Board decided to have the 2021 Reunion in Colorado Springs in accordance with the selection made by our members at the 2018 Reunion.

The most important consideration for our reunion planning is the health and safety of our members. The combined factors associated with our age and potentially compromised health will be our guiding concern as we evaluate the Covid-19 information in July. We know that the hotel and tour bus companies currently have mandatory social distancing restrictions. The Air Force Academy has been closed and is just now beginning to return to normal operations for permanent party, but not visitors. We will advise you as soon as possible so that you can plan to attend, or plan some other event with your families.

There are some financial factors that also concern your Board. Specifically, airfare and non-refundable airline tickets are a major factor. Therefore, we continue to recommend that you do not make airline reservations at this time. The hotel has assured us that if we have to cancel due to COVID-19, that they will accept cancellations without penalty. The Reunion BRAT has also assured us that registration fees will also be returned without penalty. Therefore, from a financial perspective, the airlines are our only concern regarding financial penalties and refunds.

Remember, our major concern is the health and safety of our members. We will not hold a reunion this year if your Board of Directors feels that there will be a major risk for our members. COVID-19 cases are spiking in some areas for a variety of reasons. We will do the best that we can to make an informed decision. Until then, please do all that you can to remain healthy by following guidelines from the CDC and your local area health professionals.

On behalf of your Board of Directors, we send our very best to you.

Steve Gattis
