Subject: 2020 VSPA Reunion Update

My Brothers and Sisters of the Vietnam Security Police Association,

Your VSPA Board of Directors held a conference call on July 2, 2020 to specifically discuss the current situation in the United States regarding the Corona Virus. All members of the BOD participated in an information exchange by making the following comments when they were asked individually about their thoughts regarding the 2020 Reunion and whether or not we should cancel or postpone the 2020 reunion due to the spike in Corona Virus cases in the United States:
• The age and underlying health conditions of our members equal very high risk for those who might attend the reunion.

• There are quarantine issues in many states. Some members would be restricted from traveling back into their own home state if they have been to states where the COVID-19 cases are very high.

• Out of an abundance of caution, we should not hold the reunion due to the risk for our members.

• The very high risk of travel and gathering in large groups defeats the purpose of our members safely gathering for a reunion, even if only one person were to contract COVID-19. The need for members to travel from throughout the US, from states with varying virus cases and conditions, when coupled with the inherent potential close contact with people on airplanes and other forms of public transportation, and the variety of locations at the reunion, make the risk exceptionally high. If one person were to die from COVID-19 contracted at the reunion, it would be an unspeakable tragedy.

• The spikes in the virus cases throughout the United States require that we postpone the reunion in Colorado Springs until 2021. Someone who is asymptomatic could bring the virus from their home state to the reunion and spread it among our members.

• They are currently predicting that there will be 100,000 cases per day in the US by October.

• They are predicting 170,000 deaths in the US by October, the same month as our reunion.

• Until mid-June, members of our BOD were mostly in favor of holding the reunion. However, with the current spike in COVID-19 cases and related deaths, we should not risk the health of our members by holding the reunion.
The decision was very difficult; however, we, as your Board of Directors, unanimously felt that there was nothing else we could do other than cancel the 2020 reunion. We care so much for the well-being of our members, and there is so much that we do not know about the infectious nature of the Corona Virus, that we should not and cannot take any chances with the health of our members by holding the 2020 reunion. We must take care of our own.
We also decided that we will immediately start planning the 2021 reunion which will be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We will use the same hotel next year. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the special events staff of the hotel for understanding our health concerns regarding COVID-19. They moved our contract without penalty to next year. The 2022 VSPA reunion will be held at Luke AFB, Arizona, as previously selected by our members.
I want each of you to know that your health and safety are the over-riding factors in cancelling the VSPA reunion for this year. We all look forward to our time together and will very much look forward to the 2021 reunion. Until then, please take care of yourselves and your families. We are thankful that our members have remained healthy in the incredibly difficult environment throughout our country, especially with our very high risk factors due to age and underlying health conditions. Hopefully, we will be able to gather without risk next year and enjoy a very high turnout for our brotherhood and sisterhood.
If you have questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to give me a call.
Jerry R. Nelson
President, Vietnam Security Police Association
