Mike Hilton was having problems posting and asked me to post this for him:

"(Gary, Would you please post this for me?) I recently found out that our Brother Steve Raiford(DN) passed away Nov 2nd. He and Mary wanted to attend the reunion, but he decided not to because of Co-Vid; but he contracted it anyway and spent two weeks in the ICU, where he passed. Mary told me that she may attend future reunions."

  • YOU'RE KIDDING ME--Left-Coast Souther CA Edison turned off electric power in the middle of Thanksgiving! -- Don Poss, Sat, Nov 27 2021, 18:48:54 PST (NoHost/83.229.32.146)
    Gents,

I hope all had a great Thanksgiving! We did despite left-coast politics deciding it was a good idea to turn electricity off right in the middle of Turkey Day because of wind. Our family had gathered and the turkey had cooked for the first two hours with an hour to go--everyone was in pain smell the Thanksgiving meal cooking.

Nevertheless--a little ingenuity saved the day and we put the turkey in the outdoor barbeque and fired'er up. It was the tenderest fall-off-the bone turkey I've ever had!

    Here comes Christmas!

  • Horse of a different color. -- Larry, Sat, Nov 27 2021, 8:22:52 PST (host-67-44-241-18.hnremote.net/67.44.241.18)
If you read my earlier post about information being removed from the main page and back and forth with Don there is still a question of why a white horse patch bears 12th SPs under it instead of Laison. The patch was never sewn on that is displayed on Patches and Crests or letters and stories on CRB's drop menu.

The Red Horse is an AF heavy construction Sq. The 555th Red Horse was at CRB, and provided their own security on their compound. I never got past their gate guards who prevented scrounging, even as LE on patrol. Their patch is a Red Horse driving a bull dozer with a rifle on its shoulder. Their mascot was a Philippine pony named Step and a half who was later sent to the 554th in Thialand.

The White Horse patch is a rearing white horse on a blue circular patch with white line around the edge. This patch is the patch of the ROK army division stationed north of 6Th Convulsant Hosp. Also artillery batteries south of Sui Chin. In my year book there is a photo of an SP in the ROK CSC who could very well be Steve Gattis who placed the patch on our site with improper label.

As we are all getting older it's my desire to see nothing but accurate information on our site as it is our responsibility and legacy to leave to our followers.

    Larry

What's going on posting the full roster on the main site page. Before you say rosters are all there for public viewing what concerns me and ticks me off is personal information like DOB and age. Are you trying to make it simple for scammers to start checking us out for what ever scams are out there. Is the BB so far in Stage IV that we can't look after our own. I mean besides this gross error in judgment there needs to be more security on our sites information. Like giving the 483 credit for things at CRB years before they were at CRB in the what happened today main page. Speaking of CRB in the patches and crests there still is a Korean White Horse division patch with 12th Security police under it. You would think that with two past VSPA presidents who were both 12th SPs that error would have been corrected. Larry Gramps LM 401

For those members attending the reunion and flying into the Denver, CO Airport. If you are planning on taking a shuttle to Colorado Springs, CO, I strongly suggest making a reservation with Groome Transportation at 877-587-3456. I understand you must have a reservation with them prior to arrival at the airport. They will do a round trip reservation for approximately $100.00. They will also deliver you directly to the hotel. Hopefully, having a reservation will prevent a long wait for a shuttle. Looking forward to seeing everyone in CO!

Where Do Poets go at life’s end?
Do they scribe with quill or pen a perfect
    sonnet as angels nod approval?

Do they drift within somber clouds at night sprinkling
snowflake words of crystal that float away dancing,
    twirling their way to earth?

Do poets departed wonder if their poems’ now
gather dust unread, or if a single soul recalled
‘that one phrase’ upon learning of his passing?

Edwin "Jack" Smith stood his final Guardmount at home today, surrounded by his family. Jack was VSPA Life Member #453 and served at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Vietnam with his beloved 377th Security Police Squadron in 1968-69. Jack also served as a Vice President of the VSPA where he fostered the deep sense of brotherhood we share. He continued to support our brotherhood and the VSPA Sisterhood for years after he left office. He supported all of the activities of the VSPA Facebook Group as an administrator along with his wife, Roberta, who is also the Chaplain for the VSPA Sisterhood. He took great care of his brothers from the 377th by making patches and challenge coins for them, as well as organizing squadron dinners at our reunions. Jack received many awards from the VSPA, including the Warriors Medal of Valor for his service to the members of the VSPA.

It is comforting to know that he is with his brothers Lew Goldberg, Jackie Kays and Alvin "Sarge" Matthews who very likely had this to say to Jack: "Welcome home, Jack. We've got a bunch of VSPA brothers and sisters here. This is a great place to have a reunion...we just don't have any beer. There is a tree over there where we hang our short timer ribbons. We meet at the tree to say WELCOME HOME and to remind our sisters and brothers that ain't nobody ever gonna be short again. We are all home. Now, go say hello to your Mom and Dad."

VSPA lost a Hero with the passing of Jack Eckert, LM-683, this week. Jack Eckert served two tours in Vietnam (1966-1967; 1968-1969) at Phan Rang, Air Base, 35th SPS and Nha Trang Air Base, 14th SPS, as a Sentry Dog handler for Prince 874F, and received a Bronze Star with a "V" for valor for his combat actions. It is a sad time for all of us.

Rest in Peace Brother, you will surely be missed.

As reported by Jack Eckert’s son. Greg Eckert: Jack Leroy Eckert retired as a USAF MSGT. He served in Vietnam at Nha Trang (14th SPS), and at Phan Rang (35th SPS).
Greg, his son, wrote, “My father earned the Bronze Star w/V for heroism during his two tours in Vietnam while serving with the Security Police as a K-9 handler (Prince).”
Treasured memories: “Dad and I used to face time every day. Sometimes I would grab a screenshot…”
During his time in the military after that we were stationed at Offutt AFB NE, Minot AFB ND, Offutt again, and Ramstein AB W Germany. After a decorated military career of 26 years, he retired. That was not the end of his service to our country, however. He then became a Government Service worker, specializing in Intelligence work, which he did for another 15 years. He had to retire early when he was diagnosed with COPD while working at Edwards AFB, CA. For the remainder of his life, he enjoyed the company of his family in Surprise, AZ.

  • K-9 MWD/Sentry Dogs and ROBOTS -- Don Poss, Wed, Jun 02 2021, 11:15:44 PDT (NoHost/83.229.32.157)
Robot Dogs -- very cool -- but...

Will IT carry my helmet, lick my face, or strike terror in the heart of sappers in the wire? Will IT block my path refusing to let me walk in to a waiting deadly snake, be extra vigilant when he knows I'm sick; set at heel while sharing my poncho in a monsoon, or Attack a battalion firing automatic weapons and RPGs; patrol silently while quartering a post for hours, or understand the guy stepping out of a bunker to take a wiz is not Ho Chi Minh, or save the lives of 10,000 US. troops? Or willingly give it's circuit-boards ("life") to save yours?
    OR
Is the Robot only as good as its programming algorithms and macros? Will ITs gears lock-up when a twig clogs it, or decide the good-guys are the bad-guys if they're dressed similarly? Will IT know what to do when the guy (tech Handler) on the other side of the world working the joy-stick stands up for a stretch; or obey basic hand commands in the dark, like Sit, Down, Watch, Attack, or simply be a friend? Will IT run through mental-rain to stand guard over a wounded Airman? Will there be any "connection" at all between the tech-handler or vice-versa, the Robot Dog?

There are countless other what-ifs, like, what-if a Robot Airman comes online...will IT be worth its C-Rats or MREs? Will it give away your position by its AI deciding IT should stand up? Or, like my old Prius, will IT just decides IT's no longer what you thought IT was (a car/robot), at the worst moment?

I'm all for tech advancements. We are a long ways from Star Trek's "Data" character--or driverless cars for that matter.
What if the bad guys Hack the Robot, and IT suddenly works for them: will you ever trust it?

    Just a few thoughts.

  • CALIFORNIA RESIDENT Renew your expired CDL online! -- Don Poss, Thu, Jun 03 2021, 14:27:51 PDT (64.188.5.204.static.quadranet.com/64.188.5.204)
    CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS ONLY

    Gents and Ladies,
Until the COVID-19 pandemic is over, and regardless of your age, California is offering online driver’s license (CDL) renewal after paying the renewal fee, to those with a expired CDL, with or without a one-year extension. If you are a California resident and have an expired driver’s license, you are now eligible to renew your CDL online by completing the CA DMV form and paying the fee.

    HERE'S HOW:
•Open your computer browser and in the URL address box enter:https://www.dmv.ca.gov

•Login to Online Services or create a new account then login.

•After successful login, the form will display your CDL number.

•At https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/driver-licenses-dl/ , see the Left Column of DMV options and scroll down to “Driver’s License or ID Card Renewal”. Click that link.

•Answer the questions qualifying you to Vote as a US Citizen: Citizen? 18 or over? Not an inmate in prison? Then clink next/continue and pay your $37 fee.
That’s it. Your renewed CDL will arrive in the mail within a few days (so they say)

California will align its mask guidance with CDCs on June 15, 2021. California’s Governor has said California will keep existing mask guidance in place until June 15, 2021, when it aims to fully reopen the economy. After that, the state plans to allow fully vaccinated Californians to go without a mask in most indoor settings. You will still have the option to wear a mask if you choose.

It is unknown if the expired-renewal offer will continue until the Federal Government says the plague is over. What I do know is that my wife and I just renewed our CDLs today, and we will not have to stand in the insane CA DMV lines, or play the “Your name is not on my appointments list”, take a written test, eye chart, go to this window; go to that window, bureaucratic games.
If you qualify for the renewal, it is painless, and I recommend it

    Don Poss

Yesterday, I received a call from Kathy Pierson about our Brother Dave. He had emergency surgery yesterday due to a spinal infection that was placing him in real jeopardy. The surgerons did a masterful, dangerous procedure on his back. They had to remove some bone to safely get to the infection. He was having problems using his legs and this will hlep relieve that issue. He is in ICU at a hospital in Reno, NV. They were unable to safely remove all of the infection; however, he is receving large doses of antibotics to kill the remainder. I was able to talk with him last night and he is in good spirits and is fighting hard to get healthy again. Please keep Kathy and Dave in your prayers for a full and quick recovery.

Update: Today was a good day! They are going to move her out of ICU tomorrow. We expect she will be in the hospital a couple weeks and then sent to a rehab facility for a few more. She is tired and definitely medicated but overall she is in good spirits and super positive! Anyone that knows her knows she is tough and this will not be the first time she has overcome a challenge. She is a TSA dream! She officially got a new rod in her arm to connect to the one already in her shoulder.
Greg was with her all day and we were able to FaceTime and we were able to FaceTime a few times. She’s not ready to take calls yet, but expect she will be back to her social self in no time.
Thank you all for your love for my mom, your prayers and support! ❤️ Love, Greg, Jolene, Jonathan, Camden & Davin

Three newly added presumptive conditions, which are bladder cancer, thyroidism and Parkinsonism, or Parkinson-like tremor symptoms.
If you are less than 100% disabled and have any of these conditions, file now.

Even though you may have filed prior and claims were denied in the past and who were diagnosed with one of those illnesses should now file for benefits.

I would definitely resubmit the claim.

If you have not filed, submit the claim and get it into the VA system as soon as possible.

American, What I Want is to. . .
    (c) 2021 by Don Poss

Drive from California to Florida and never see a person wearing a mask, a tent canopy beside a restaurant, another boarded up store, or a line formed standing six feet apart.
I want to see children playing on school grounds, and hear the massive roar of fans cheering a winning touchdown, or home run . . . and marvel again at the sight of 50,000 people in the stands.
I want to answer the doorbell and see the neighbor’s face when I tell him the trash truck hit his car.
I want to drive windows-down and breath the fresh ocean air along the coast, pristine mountains, new moan hay, and hear a noisy lawnmower roaring too early on a Sunday morning.
I want the weather channel showing videos of crowed beaches, surfers, beautiful sunsets, and happy people riding the giant Ferris-wheel.
I want to enjoy a sudden waft of a barbecue cooking steaks and hamburgers, and see the inflatable trampoline rocking with laughter at a neighbor’s birthday party.
I want to go a week without hearing the next hundred-thousandth death has occurred—never hear COVID voiced again—and forget that 2020 curse but remember those we lost.
I want to see softball games at corner fields, soccer teams coming out of piazza-arcades, couples walking to parked cars with doggie-bags, and people laughing at someone carrying their heavy dog in the park because he’s too tired to walk.
I want to go to a mall where all the stores are open, escalators are riding full, and later sleep snug remembering the parking space I snagged first.
I want to plan a trip to the grandkids house and have to factor in traffic at rush hour, and take the paddle-wheel cruise vacation we had to cancel.
I want to see professional panhandlers on their work corners with creative signs separating people that don’t travel that route often enough to discern true need.
I want to see a motorcycle officer writing the guy that wizzed pass everyone on the freeway at 100 mph.
I want to send up a little prayer for every emergency responder code-3 with lights and sirens, and for law enforcements’ safety cruising quietly on patrol.
I want the people to have the same health-plans politicians grant themselves—and I want want to see theater marquess listing films that excite and entertain the people and pack big-screen theaters.
I want to shop at stores and handle merchandise without worrying about catching someone’s plague; support my town’s restaurants and stores—and go to church without the government telling me how I should or should not do that, and maybe feel a little guilty sleeping in once in a while.
I want to complain again about people letting their kids run amok in my favorite restaurant.
I want The House of Representatives, Senate, and the Supreme Court subject to recall by the people when they violate their oath to uphold the Constitution—and repair the voting system to reflect the actual will of the people—and those politicians daring to profane that process severely punished by law, and conspirators orchestrating such tried for treason.
I want the United States currency respected for true honest value, and not for the speed of its money presses. I want governments to balance their budgets, not exceed available funds, and worry to about job security—just as the people do. I want to ride a zip-line through a rainforest’s canopy.
I want government to earn back my faith and flagging trust in the three branches of government, and bureaucrats to fear the peoples’ wrath when they dare exceed the will of Congress to corrupt, steal, and inflict personal agendas violating the sanctity of our trust, and all so employed be held accountable to laws and subject to the same justice as We the People.
I want America united as one people, with tolerance for opposing ideologies that divide us as a nation, and stop the coming quake should we fail. I want the people to understand we must protect our country against any tyrant or tyrannical government.
Mostly, I want my country back—
restored to the world-coveted way of life only we of the USA can create . . .
    the 50’s would do nicely.

    America, that’s what I want.

This month will be 50 years ago that I first met them. So far it's been only emails and phone calls but God's will we will reunite this spring.

Watching the “News”, I thought, ‘here they go again’ with another “the sky is falling” alarm, claiming the earth is speeding up its rotation by 1.5 milliseconds—oh my. WHAT? What’s a millisecond? should I grab my quick get’a’way bag? Are we going to be tossed off the earth into space? and if so, would I even need a bag? So here is what a millisecond is (okay, I looked it up): “1 ms = 0.001 sec., or, Millisecond is a time measurement unit with the symbol of ms, which is equal to a one thousandth of a second. It can also be defined as the duration of…[a camera’s photo flash of light]. Phew…that was a close one--we're safe for another billion years.

What's happened to our bulletin board? Are people not feeling the need to type out a small post about what we may have in common. I didn't reply to Steve's post about Christmas 69 because mine at CRB 68 was miserable to me being a new guy between KP and orientation training, new baby at home.
Current events would be political to talk about and should not be posted on our open board. But no mention of our two former Security Forces members. Regardless of which side. They have a connection to us.
I have sent my prayers to their families in hopes it eases their pain and suffering.

One of the goofiest things that I remember was Christmas 1969' I was on Tiger flt. We got back to the Hooch around 11 pm. We then started our celebration which of course included indulging in consuming a FEW adult adult beverages. After a while the Christmas spirit overtook us and we went to the CSC and put a book on the mic. key and jingle belled the the whole security force. The next we were called to the commanders office and got chewed out by him while he was smiling. MERRY CHRISTMAS

    Tell Me about Heaven
    Veteran calling
    © 2020 by Don Poss

    Lord, tell me about Heaven,
are streets paved with gold, and
    rivers flowing pristine?

Are there mountains with snow blankets,
and valley flowers waving to and fro?
Does rain ever fall, or the dew touch the rose?

Are children there laughing and playing,
do You catch them when they fall? and pets
    scampering about, chasing the ball?

Do lions really lie down at peace with lambs?
Will my dreams You know about,
    follow me there?

Is there heavenly music when the angels sing?
    Can I join the tenors,
    with a little bling?

Is my Place nearly ready? are there any stairs?
Are Air Force squadrons guarding the gates?
    and most of all, Father…
    are You waiting there?

    • My name is __________________________________, from _____________________________.
    (Full Name) (City & State)
    • I am a Vietnam Veteran and have personally been impacted by Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam and/or Thailand during the war.

    • The Senate Veterans Affairs Committee passed S. 332 unanimously, that would provide VA coverage of three conditions linked to Agent Orange. Tens of thousands of veterans are estimated to be impacted by these "presumptives" -- chloracne, peripheral neuropathy, and porphyria cutanea tarda.

    • Cite evidence from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) which has repeatedly proven these presumptives are sufficiently connected to Agent Orange and should join the list of conditions already covered by the VA. The end dates provided by the VA regarding these illnesses have been disproved by many sources including the Mayo Clinic. These time limitations and end dates should be removed as soon as possible.

    • This provision is supported by 39 veterans service organizations.

    • The VA has not listened to the overwhelming scientific evidence provided by the NASEM and seeks to delay with additional studies, which is why we desperately need Congress to act.

    • I ask that you support H.R. 566. Please do all that you can to ensure it is enacted this Congress.

    https://veterans.house.gov/subcommittees/disabilitv-assistance-and-memorial-affairs

Ensure All Veterans Affected by Agent Orange Receive Coverage for Their Illnesses

Objective: Ask the Congress of the United States, the National Institutes of Health, and the President of the United States to amend the 38 CFR. 3.309 and Title 38 USC 1116 to eliminate onset dates for the presumptive diseases.
Certain limitations-were placed on the diseases, establishing unreasonable and punitive onset dates, resulting in loss of earned disability compensation. Therefore, we ask our elected and appointed officials to remedy this wrong and award earned benefits through the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Issue: Three illnesses believed to be caused by contact with Agent Orange, under VA regulations, must be at least 10% disabling within one year of contact with herbicides.

Chloracne - skin condition, skin rash, looks like acne; appears anywhere on the body at any time, lesions are often found behind the ears, in the armpits, and in the groin region which are itchy and get hot.

Peripheral Nephropathy - illness of the nervous system that causes numbness, tingling of hands, feet and legs, weakness of muscles, and loss of coordination and reflexes.

Porphyria Cutanea Tarda - a rare illness that can make your liver stop working correctly, can cause your skin to thin, blister and scar, changes in pigmentation when in the sun, and excessive hair growth.

Background: Veterans suffering from these conditions have an incredibly challenging evidentiary burden.

Veterans were not asked if they were exposed or even came into contact with Agent Orange. Many veterans were treated for skin rashes in Vietnam, but the evidence of treatment was never put into their medical files. According to the VA, there is a one-year cutoff date for these veterans to have told about any of their symptoms, but many were not known, or did not show until later.

    · Chloracne occurs soon after exposure but can look like and present as common forms of acne seen in teenagers and young adults.

    · Porhyria Cutanea Tania (PCT) occurs from an external factor in 75%-85% of people. Often the symptoms do not appear until after the age of 30, even for cases: where it is genetic. The veterans who now have PCT were stationed in Vietnam when they were in their early twenties, meaning their condition was unlikely to appear within a year as directed by the existing law.

    · Peripheral Neuropathy has a gradual onset of symptoms per the Mayo Clinic; there is no time limit on when symptoms start.

    FAQ:
Q; Why was the time limitation added?
A: It was thought that these diseases only manifested within a certain period of time, however, an unintended consequence was that veterans who didn't see a doctor in time are limited from receiving care and benefits.

Q: Will all veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange have these conditions covered, even if they developed later?
A: Yes, however developing these conditions without dioxin exposure is highly unlikely.

Congress: Support the veterans who are suffering from Agent Orange Illnesses but are limited by unjust evidentiary and time limitations.

Pass the Agent Orange Exposures Fairness Act - HR566 and S332

    Good Evening,

I just wanted to inform you that my father, Richard W. Huskey, member number 1415, passed away on Saturday, 9-19-2020. He had been battling dementia for the better part of seven years. For the last few years he was out of communication due to not being able to remember how to use a computer or what he needed to do to keep in contact. He did speak about the VSPA often and how he missed it, but during his battle he ended up forgetting a lot. I don't know if there is a tribute to be done or anything of that nature, but I figured I would let someone know that, he was welcomed home.

  • Erasing History -- Jackie R. Kays, Sat, Jul 11 2020, 17:27:23 PDT (NoHost/64.188.254.55)
    White Paper
    Date: 6/12/20
    Subject: How to erase history
    Author: Jackie R. Kays
First you chose what period of history you want to erase. This time, we are going to erase the Southern Confederacy of the United State and all its participation in the Civil War.
We must destroy all remembrance and tributes to the people and events that occurred during this period of history, this would include the following.
All statutes inside of buildings and outside, all photos, paintings, murals, newspaper pictures, stories, and poems regarding the war. Burn all books that mention the war. Destroy all personal diaries, journals, and records of the war. Destroy all solders tombstones in cemeteries throughout the South. Change the name of all buildings include schools that are named for Confederate officers of the war. Change all names of military installation named for Confederate Officers.
Now the question that must be answered…how much history have we changed?
    Answer: Not one damn iota!!
Nothing in this world can change one moment of history!
    Only damn fools keep trying!

  • 2020 VSPA Reunion Update -- Jerry Nelson (Nelson), Wed, Jul 08 2020, 7:54:30 PDT (45-17-26-206.lightspeed.snantx.sbcglobal.net/45.17.26.206)
My Brothers and Sisters of the Vietnam Security Police Association,

Your VSPA Board of Directors held a conference call on July 2, 2020 to specifically discuss the current situation in the United States regarding the Corona Virus. All members of the BOD participated in an information exchange by making the following comments when they were asked individually about their thoughts regarding the 2020 Reunion and whether or not we should cancel or postpone the 2020 reunion due to the spike in Corona Virus cases in the United States:
    • The age and underlying health conditions of our members equal very high risk for those who might attend the reunion.

    • There are quarantine issues in many states. Some members would be restricted from traveling back into their own home state if they have been to states where the COVID-19 cases are very high.

    • Out of an abundance of caution, we should not hold the reunion due to the risk for our members.

    • The very high risk of travel and gathering in large groups defeats the purpose of our members safely gathering for a reunion, even if only one person were to contract COVID-19. The need for members to travel from throughout the US, from states with varying virus cases and conditions, when coupled with the inherent potential close contact with people on airplanes and other forms of public transportation, and the variety of locations at the reunion, make the risk exceptionally high. If one person were to die from COVID-19 contracted at the reunion, it would be an unspeakable tragedy.

    • The spikes in the virus cases throughout the United States require that we postpone the reunion in Colorado Springs until 2021. Someone who is asymptomatic could bring the virus from their home state to the reunion and spread it among our members.

    • They are currently predicting that there will be 100,000 cases per day in the US by October.

    • They are predicting 170,000 deaths in the US by October, the same month as our reunion.

    • Until mid-June, members of our BOD were mostly in favor of holding the reunion. However, with the current spike in COVID-19 cases and related deaths, we should not risk the health of our members by holding the reunion.
The decision was very difficult; however, we, as your Board of Directors, unanimously felt that there was nothing else we could do other than cancel the 2020 reunion. We care so much for the well-being of our members, and there is so much that we do not know about the infectious nature of the Corona Virus, that we should not and cannot take any chances with the health of our members by holding the 2020 reunion. We must take care of our own.
We also decided that we will immediately start planning the 2021 reunion which will be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We will use the same hotel next year. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the special events staff of the hotel for understanding our health concerns regarding COVID-19. They moved our contract without penalty to next year. The 2022 VSPA reunion will be held at Luke AFB, Arizona, as previously selected by our members.
I want each of you to know that your health and safety are the over-riding factors in cancelling the VSPA reunion for this year. We all look forward to our time together and will very much look forward to the 2021 reunion. Until then, please take care of yourselves and your families. We are thankful that our members have remained healthy in the incredibly difficult environment throughout our country, especially with our very high risk factors due to age and underlying health conditions. Hopefully, we will be able to gather without risk next year and enjoy a very high turnout for our brotherhood and sisterhood.
If you have questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to give me a call.
    Jerry R. Nelson
    President, Vietnam Security Police Association

Every year around July 4th and New Years Eve, lots of loud fireworks are set off, causing a lot of anxiety among dogs. I don't own a dog, but I love them, so I wondered if the fireworks might be emitting a high frequency sound (think: dog whistle) that is especially hurtful to K-9s? Do any of you who own dogs have ear muffs or hearing protectors specifically for your pooch that actually work? If so, what brand have you purchased? Thanks from all the dog owners in my Facebook friends list.

Gents, 58 years ago today, 25 June 1962, I enlisted in the Air Force, "guaranteed" Air Police. Never regretted it. DEROS'd from Da Nang RVN in 25 June 1966. Never regretted that either:)

Best thing was the lasting friendships that followed me home, and there are the not so friendly memories of Vietnam. Greatest gift to me was when Al Watts gave me Blackie 129X as my K-9 Sentry Dog. Blackie really was the best dog in country, although other puppy-pushers might dispute that (but in their heart of hearts, deeeep down they know the truth). Longest Day was when JB (James Bruce Jones) was KIA. Best friend, Gary Eberbach (RIP 2017), whom I introduced to his wife, Rita, who actually stayed married to him for over 50 years. Never played match-maker again. The VA once asked if I could flip a magic switch and make it all go away...would I? No. And No again. Its hard to say if the good and bad of Vietnam balance out. Not really, I think...different scales. Besides, to just erase Vietnam would mean that I would never have known all the above, nor the importance of VSPA in my life. And if that means a few dreams that kick one in the tail and front-side, then there's that. Knowing what I know today, would I go back to Vietnam and all that represents? I'm just glad that's a hypothetical question; and a tough one. The answer revolves around a coward government that is spineless enough to waste 58,000 young men and women and bugging out like LBJ and his herd...just as government also killed all of the K-9 at war's ending, except for fewer than 200, and left the rest in Vietnam; and when the same military and government decided riding horses in to battle was no longer of value, ordered them machinegunned in pits by the thousands. So. The real question is whether I would stand up for my country should the socialists take power? then, yes. But today at almost 76 I'm too dang old to realistically to take to the field without my cane and Su-M-T-W-Th-F-Sa pharmacy duffel-bag. There are other ways men of our generation can serve, even in times of peace (when was that, I missed it).

Melancholy day ... and so many decades have passed since Vietnam, and too few in the future.

Don Poss (Okay...I'm over it now: bowl of bugs anyone? :)

  • 2020 REUNION UPDATE -- Steve Gattis, Tue, Jun 23 2020, 13:45:05 PDT (host-67-44-224-242.hnremote.net/67.44.224.242)
Hello, Dear Brothers and Sisters of the VSPA.

Our president, Jerry Nelson, has asked me to send a reunion update to you. He asked me to assure you that we are very concerned with all of the COVID-19 virus issues and the problems with civil unrest throughout our country. We are monitoring virus spikes on a daily basis and tracking problems associated with demonstrations. We are also in touch with the Air Force Academy and our hotel to evaluate current COVID-19 social distancing restrictions and the impact that they may have on our reunion.

Your Board of Directors is concerned for your health and safety. We had a conference call last week to discuss the 2020 Reunion and all of the concerns that we have. We resolved to hold off making a decision about the reunion until the first week of July so that we would hopefully have more definitive information before we decide to move forward with the reunion or postpone the reunion in Colorado Springs until 2021. If we have to cancel for 2020, your Board decided to have the 2021 Reunion in Colorado Springs in accordance with the selection made by our members at the 2018 Reunion.

The most important consideration for our reunion planning is the health and safety of our members. The combined factors associated with our age and potentially compromised health will be our guiding concern as we evaluate the Covid-19 information in July. We know that the hotel and tour bus companies currently have mandatory social distancing restrictions. The Air Force Academy has been closed and is just now beginning to return to normal operations for permanent party, but not visitors. We will advise you as soon as possible so that you can plan to attend, or plan some other event with your families.

There are some financial factors that also concern your Board. Specifically, airfare and non-refundable airline tickets are a major factor. Therefore, we continue to recommend that you do not make airline reservations at this time. The hotel has assured us that if we have to cancel due to COVID-19, that they will accept cancellations without penalty. The Reunion BRAT has also assured us that registration fees will also be returned without penalty. Therefore, from a financial perspective, the airlines are our only concern regarding financial penalties and refunds.

Remember, our major concern is the health and safety of our members. We will not hold a reunion this year if your Board of Directors feels that there will be a major risk for our members. COVID-19 cases are spiking in some areas for a variety of reasons. We will do the best that we can to make an informed decision. Until then, please do all that you can to remain healthy by following guidelines from the CDC and your local area health professionals.

On behalf of your Board of Directors, we send our very best to you.

    Steve Gattis

    Who still Cares!
I am going to tell you who still cares!
The Vietnam war ended with the fall of Saigon April of 1975.As we all know, over fifty-eight thousand brave American warriors lost their lives defending the principles of the United States of America. During the duration of the war, an estimated 60 to 100 thousand draft dodgers cowardly left the country, rather than serve in the military. Forty-five years have passed since the end of the war. It did take long for the draft Dodgers to cowardly sneak back into the Good Old USA and take jobs away from returning Vietnam Veterans. Most never spent a day behind bars for their acts of treason! Some people still have the gaul to ask me, “When are you going to forgive and forget the Draft Dodgers of Vietnam War!” I always respond the same way, “When the sun burns out and hell freezes over, and not a damn day earlier!” For those who say, “Who still cares?” Well, I will gladly tell Who! Most every man and women that spent a full day in the jungles of South Vietnam, still cares as do the families of the fifty-eight thousand plus that bravely lost their lives defending the principles of the great Republic! I was thirty-seven when I was patrolling the perimeter wire at DaNang in 1965. I already had the Korean War under my belt. I am 87 now, so you see, I still care and quickly take offense at anyone, who brags about being a Vietnam War Draft dodger! I hope each one’s conscious haunts them throughout eternity!

52 years of marriage and I’ve never grown either, before. The little woman finally asked what was growing on my face... aha... a moistache-goatee. A veryyyyy long pause...... “Oh... why?” A little defensive that she apparently didn’t like it, I said, “I do ... more and more ‘it’s growing on me’.” She wasn’t impressed with my little joke. :)

I'm sitting at home alone on this Memorial Day reflecting on my military service as a much younger man. I'm not one for war stories and think today more of the fine men and woman I served with. This nation since It's inception has given a million lives to preserve not only our freedoms, but those of other nations. What greater selfless contribution can be made by man to his fellow man then willingness to sacrifice ones life.Although war is so senseless, unfortunately seems it's part of our DNA. So there will be many more memorial days to be observed. Hopefully this tradition will prevail.

My Brothers and Sisters of the Vietnam Security Police Association,

I hope this update finds all of you doing well during this very difficult and extended period time of quarantine and social distancing. As we remain steadfast in our ongoing struggle with the constantly evolving Covid-19 Pandemic, we will carry on with our plans for our 2020 reunion in Colorado Spring, CO. Your Board of Directors (BOD) continues to hold conference calls attempting to keep updated on developments and making recommendations on how we proceed.
However, the following information has also influenced our planning: The Air Force Academy is currently closed to all except active duty personnel, retired military personnel and DOD civilians. In talking with personnel at the Academy, they are considering potentially opening on May 31, depending on the status of the virus. Other bases are also closed to visitors and have required many personnel to telecommute from home in order to minimize exposure to COVID-19. Our effort to monitor information nationally makes it difficult to make a final decision regarding the reunions as things seem to change almost every day. Therefore, we are in a holding pattern so that we can wait and see if the CDC will provide information that will allow the Air Force Academy, our hotel and the airlines to return to normal operations.
At this time, the thoughts of your BOD are to wait and see what takes place in the next couple of months. As America opens back up, our daily lives will hopefully get back to normal. We are still five months away from the date of our reunion. I can assure you that we will only proceed with the reunion if there is no danger to our membership. While we do have a clause that allows us to cancel due to something like the Covid-19 Pandemic, we are far too early to engage that clause. We still are recommending that no one make hotel or airline reservations until we can gain more information and decide on our final position. Your BOD will have another conference call very soon.
I continue to ask for your patience in allowing us to monitor the situation so we can make an informed decision. This is a difficult decision and one that will not be made without serious consideration on how it will affect our membership. I want all of us to be able to safely travel to Colorado and have a great time at our 26th VSPA reunion without risk to our health.
For now, I also want to warn you regarding scams that target fears related to the Corona Virus or COVID-19. One Facebook scam targets seniors with a phony grant or loan to “help pay medical bills” by providing a link to the “U.S. Emergency Grants Federation”. The link will take you to an official looking “government” page that will ask for your social security number and other personal information. DON’T DO IT! Robo calls, fake cures, fake charities, email scams and a variety of other scams are working to gather your personal information to gain access to your bank account. Others will solicit gift cards for charities. DON’T DO IT! While we must remain vigilant to these scams that target people in our age group, we must also stay healthy, safe, avoid health risks and follow all of the recommendations from the CDC. I will keep you posted as we move forward.

    Jerry Nelson, President
    Vietnam security Police Association

    Gents,
Media is comparing numbers of casualties between the Vietnam War and Coronavirus COVID-19. The point as I understand their reported story is COVID-19 has reached a milestone. That's where the reports I've seen stop.

The real point is 58,193 were KIA or LOD in Vietnam (as you well know), and as of 4:35 PM 4/28/2020, COVID-19 death total for the United States is 58,947.

It took the Vietnam War 19 years to reach 58,193 war casualties. It took the Coronavirus exactly 60 days to surpass the number of names on The Wall.

I understand America wants to go back to work. I also know that VSPA are aged in the endangered species category. All of the media encourages those at risk to bunker down for a while. I think that info is good. I'm 75. Jackie Kays is still kicking at 87. What I intend to do is stay indoors with the woman I love, and not go roaming and shopping and restaurant-ing (is that a word), although I would like to. I plan to wait another 2-3 weeks--after--large numbers of citizens begin to work and do their parts to renew the America we all love. Then, if the stats continue new dead at over 2,000 daily (today, 2,479 additional were added), I will reconsider the risk but likely continue playing chicken-little and watch the numbers a little longer.

For our aging members, the virus can still be deadly. Each of us, when the time comes, will evaluate what's appropriate for self and significant other (if there are no neighbors with 50 miles--go for it. If you live NY City (ground zero), watch the numbers, use caution, and pop a flare before charging out.

Curious, I wonder how many "essential workers" have been working across the country all along? My son-in-law is one of them. If their numbers are in the hundreds of thousand (or a million), it would be informative to see the stats on how COVID-19 has impacted them.

    Don Poss

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Vice President Larry Fleming's Father, Dee C. Fleming this morning. Please keep the Fleming family in your thougts and prayers during this difficult time.

Dee C. Fleming, 101, passed easily into the arms of God April 16, 2020. Dee was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico on January 12, 1919 to D C and Viola Fleming. Dee graduated from Florence Union High School in Florence, Arizona in 1940.

Upon graduation, Dee’s good friend talked him into joining the Arizona National Guard for a period of three years and on September 2, 1940, he was renamed, Dee “Caesar” Fleming by the US Army. Just two weeks later, on September 16, 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt reclassified Dee’s National Guard unit, joining them into the elite 158th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Bushmasters. General Douglas MacArthur later proclaimed, “No greater combat team has ever deployed for battle.”

From his initial assignment he spent an active enlistment, going from Panama to Australia, to New Guinea, then north, clearing islands up to the Philippines and returning to the U.S. He was honorably discharged in June, 1945, with the rank of Tech Sergeant. He was decorated with the Pacific Theater Campaign ribbon, Philippine Liberation ribbon and two Bronze Stars. He was also awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge. Dee returned to Arizona where, on February 17, 1946, he married Beulah Myrtle Wells in Florence, Arizona. To this union, three children were born: Larry Dee Fleming, Daniel Keith Fleming and Ella Louise Fleming. Dee and Beulah moved to Pecos, Texas in 1956, then on to Goldthwaite, Texas in 1981. After being very active in their community and church, Beulah died in July, 1990. Dee married Betty Jean Scott, a beloved native of Goldthwaite, in November, 1991. Betty died in August, 2017. Dee, being unable to live by himself, took up residence at Goldthwaite Health & Rehabilitation Center shortly after Betty’s passing.

Dee was always a “doer” for anyone he could help. He built hand rails, wheel chair ramps, and yard gates for the folks getting up in age. His most loved project was helping start a cowboy church in Goldthwaite. After years of work, the church became Western Heritage Cowboy Church where he was an active and founding member and known to all as Papa Dee. With the help of friends and family, Dee continued as an active member, attending services as often as he could, until his death.

Dee is survived by his sister, Sybil Wilson, of Mesa, Arizona, and his brother, Dwain Fleming and wife, Connie, of Conyers, Georgia, his sons Larry Fleming and wife, Martha, of Glen Rose, Texas, Danny Fleming and wife, Julie, of Pecos, Texas and his daughter Ella Louise Fleming and spouse, Marilyn Kay Blanton, of Dallas, Texas, stepsons Richard Scott and wife Peggy, of Cedar Park, Texas and Rodney Scott of Belton, Texas. He is also survived by grandchildren Andra Fleming Mayberry and husband, Brandon, of Glen Rose, Texas, Marissa Fleming McWaters of Pflugerville, Texas, Alan Fleming and wife, Shannon, of Llano, Texas, Amanda Fleming Monroe and husband, David, of Houston, Texas, Elena Scott Hammonds, of Longview, Texas and Brett Scott of Kyle, Texas, Katie Scott, of Denton, Texas, and Connor Scott of Temple, Texas as well as 16 beloved great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Western Heritage Cowboy Church, P O Box 1034 Goldthwaite, Texas 76844.

  • 2020 VSPA Reunion Update -- Jerry Nelson (Nelson), Tue, Mar 31 2020, 11:35:32 PDT (45-17-26-206.lightspeed.snantx.sbcglobal.net/45.17.26.206)
My Brothers and Sisters of the Vietnam Security Police Association,
I would like for each of you to know that your Board of Directors has been working hard to plan our 2020 VSPA Reunion in Colorado Springs, Colorado for October 7-11, 2020. As you are all aware, the COVID-19 pandemic is creating havoc throughout our country. As a result of the pandemic, the Board of Directors is conducting conference calls to ensure that we can make reasonable decisions regarding plans for the reunion. Fortunately, time is on our side and we are discussing many items related to our time together. The Reunion Brat has contracted our hotel; however, to avoid potential problems with travel restrictions related to the pandemic, we want to postpone making reservations until we are certain that the restrictions will be lifted. Reservations will be open to you when we decide to send out the Reunion Flyer and develop the registration packets. Further information will be available in Guardmount and mass emails.
At this time, your Board of Directors is continuing to plan as if the pandemic will be over and we will be in Colorado Springs in October. We will not make a decision regarding cancelling the reunion this year until we have more information. Therefore, I think it is wise to avoid making airline and hotel reservations for the trip at this time due to the current travel restrictions. We will have plenty of time to make decisions regarding our reunion based upon information regarding the COVID-19 Pandemic. We simply do not know if we will be able to hold the Reunion or not. My personal hope is that it is a go; however, if there is any chance that we could put our members at risk, we will not take that risk. Additionally, the Air Force Academy, at this time, is closed to the public. El Paso County, which is the home of the Academy, has the 3rd highest number of COVID-19 cases in Colorado. We are working with the 10th Security Forces Squadron at the Academy as the hosts for our visit. They are excited about our reunion and had already started to prepare for us when the pandemic was declared.
I am asking for your patience in allowing your Board of Directors to monitor the on-going situation so that we can make informed decisions for our plan. I assure you that we have your best interests at heart. I hope we are all able to enjoy ourselves at the Air Force Academy and Colorado Springs area in October. I will continue to update you with information as we move forward.
BEWARE that as Veterans of the War in Vietnam and Thailand, we all have health issues that increase our potential for being affected by COVID-19. Those issues are in addition to our age group.
Stay healthy, stay safe, avoid health risks and follow the recommendations from the CDC.
    Jerry Nelson
    President

I want to thank our Board members for the thoughtful E-mail they sent about today. I think something like this is long overdue for us. It made me think about all nights by myself on Oscar4, The Korean Compound and other posts that I had during Tet of 68 and 69. I thought about how scared I was and how uncertain the future seemed. I guess everything turned out OK. Now we are are facing another conflict. So to all the members of the VSPA family stay safe and in your bunker and we'll make it through this crap as well.

  • Dan Dozier -- Ken de Russy (Rationality over Mysticism), Tue, Mar 24 2020, 13:40:30 PDT (NoHost/172.92.195.151)
I had a multi-hour phone conversation with Dan Dozier a few days ago. Although I have had many such conversations with Vietnam Vets whom I have no recollection of ever knowing, with Dan I felt like I was reconnecting with an old and dear friend. I felt a great kinship with Dan as we both retraced our personal experiences which involved remembering details of some truly harrowing episodes of being under heavy fire, at Pleiku for Dan and at Ban Me Thuot for me.

Dan's memory of a gun position in between runways and another on the south perimeter helped to add detail to my recollections. In particular, his descriptions reminded me of that all-permeating dread and tension of being in close proximity to deadly threat and the deeply unsettling uncertainty that naturally arises when one attempts to reconcile the well-warranted feeling of being only nominally trained against an ill-defined, invisible and deadly threat that by its nature arrives with no warning.

However poorly prepared we Security Police were, the augmentee received only a fraction of the training we received. Although some augmentees were more or less permanently assigned to the Security Police role as I recall was the case with Terry (sorry Terry, I forgot your last name), a VSPA member who has often posted on this list and who seems to have been an example of this, most augmentees, like Dan, seem to have been assigned to scattered nights over some weeks and would never have become familiar the job enough to ever build much confidence.

Dan's AFSC was as part of the Civil Engineer Squadron working on air conditioning equipment which was essential for some of the equipment we depended on. Our Central Security Control by 1970 was air-conditioned and the "Ready Alert" room where I spent a few nights was air-conditioned. I am sure I have Dan to thank for those fabulous and rare, few nights of air-conditioned sleep!

I know that I did not survive without a scratch by my own wits, strength, and maturity. It was because of better men than me who did possess that greater strength and maturity who watched out for me. I know Dan was one of those men and I am deeply appreciative of his strength of character which came through at every moment in our conversation. Dan made a huge impression on me as just the kind of human being I want to see more of in this world. Dan served as a Defender of the Force and is a most welcome addition to our fraternity.

It is with great sadness that I report the loss of one of our Brothers. Lt Col Robert (Sully) Sullivan, Life Member 623, passed this morning in Florida. Lt Col Sullivan was the Commander of the 37 SPS at Phu Cat AB, RVN in 1966-1967. He also served with the 35th SPS, at Phan Rang AB, RVN. During his career, he completed K-9 School and handled/travelled with Nemo, after Nemo's retirement, for the Air Force. He will be missed by all of us. Certainly, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his troops who truly loved and admired him. Rest in Peace Brother!

  • Pres. Trump and Coronavirus Task Force 3/20/2020. -- Don Poss, Fri, Mar 20 2020, 11:49:25 PDT (cpe-104-173-58-12.socal.res.rr.com/104.173.58.12)
Gents, FYI, the following is a basic summer of today's Pres. Trump News briefing (and followup):

SUMMARY OF PRESIDENT TRUMP and CORONAVIRUS Task Force UPDATES (3/20/2020):
    • Stats: Comparatively, the US has a very low incidence of death.
    • WORLDWIDE CASES (3/20/2020): 254,653 (up 16,500 last 24 hours); Deaths: 10,415 (up 596 last 24 hours).
    • US CONFIRMED CASES (3/20/2020): 14,250 (up 3000 last 24 hours). US Total deaths: 205 (up 48 in last 24 hours). Majority of CORONAVIRUS recoveries in US is greater than other countries. Numbers of infected will rise with the increase of testing citizens.
    • ITALY AND THE US had their first case of CORONAVIRUS on the same date. Pres Trump closed borders; Italy did not. Italy has over 3,000 deaths to date (US 205). Health experts have greatly effective in curtail the rate of spreading the virus compared to all other countries. We are hearing very positive things from our testing.
    • US BORDERS are closed for Canada and Mexico for as long as necessary: All non-US citizens at the border will be turned away immediately, pushed back or returned to their countries of origin. AGRICULTURE WORKERS (green cards) will be allowed to cross the border to help with harvests.
    • TRAVEL: All International Travel by US Citizens should be avoided. US Citizens who travel abroad may be unable to return due to airlines’ restrictions and banned borders.
    • GOVERNMENT: PRESIDENT TRUMP: We are not talking about a thousand-dollar check, but much more than that. The risk of CORONAVIRUS in the US is very low (President Trump: except for very young and old. “Do not be afraid, be vigilant in following guidelines.”). Every healthy person does not need to be tested. We want people with symptoms to get tested. If concerned, call your doctor. We will update the status of testing tomorrow.
    • PAID SICK LEAVE - At no cost to the employer.
DEFENSE PRODUCTION ACE invoked to fund business. Don’t think a nationwide lockdown may be necessary.
    • FDA VETTING DRUGS now available that may treat or stop CORONAVIRUS (not a cure). Chloroquine is a synthetic form of quinine that has been around since 1947 to treat malaria seems to be very encouraging in tests. [One test patient that seemed close to death had a rapid reversal and it was like a “Lazarus” moment.]
    • INVESTIGATIONS: Begin regarding government and civilian who sold their stock immediately prior to the virus announcement.
    • PRESIDENT TRUMP rips media for Fake News, saying they are failing in their duty to the country to report truth.
    • DISINFORMATION: China, Russia and Iran, trying to shift blame for CORONAVIRUS to US and US military--the world knows the truth of this. Coronavirus is a China-virus in origin.
