Some members of the c-not-of-c say that the (legally schmegally called Community of Christ) never said that Joseph Smith III was the founder of their church. They say that someone else said that. So, the question is, how did the NCC come to that conclusion when they went over all the papers and had all those meetings etc.?

So much double talk. How can they keep track?

The Membership and Ecclesial Relations Committee (MERC) of the General Assembly of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA and Church World Service recommends to the 2010 General Assembly that the membership application of the Community of Christ (COC) be approved. This recommendation is based on a careful review of written materials provided by the COC,

A supportive letter from Fr. James Massa, Executive Director of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, addresses one area of possible concern:

"It is always important at the onset of any discussion of the spiritual roots of Community of Christ to note that its founder is not [Joseph Smith] of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), but his son, Joseph Smith III"

How did Fr. James Massa come to that conclusion?

National Council Approves Church for Membership

Apostle Dale E. Luffman, ecumenical and interfaith officer, recently talked about Community of Christ receiving approval for membership in the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC).

Q: How did the approval process take place?

A: The delegates of the General Assembly, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland, received the report of the Membership and Ecclesial Relations Committee. [Oh, by the way, that is MERC, see above] This report was informed by consultation with Community of Christ leadership.

The gathered communions and delegates voted unanimously to receive Community of Christ as a member. In all deliberations and conversations with NCC representatives, Community of Christ leadership openly shared its traditional faith and beliefs as articulated in We Share: Identity, Mission, Message, and Beliefs and Scripture in the Community of Christ.

Before the votes, communions comprising the NCC and the delegates carefully reviewed those resources.

Would the leadership of the c-not-of-c like to inform the NCC that they were misrepresented? I don't believe so. It seems that all parties were highly satisfied with conclusions based on resources from the c-not-of-c.

"Dr. Dale Luffman, a member of the Community of Christ Quorum of Twelve Apostles, delivered the sermon at the inaugural service November 1 on the subject of hospitality with references to Genesis and Mark. He explained the historical context of the time in which Genesis was written. He challenged those who use the Sodom and Gomorrah event as a way to attack homosexuals and other members of the LGBT community. He asserted that the Lot story is about God’s hospitality, not about committed same-sex relationships in today’s world.”
