As the mystery continues to un fold perhaps the final answers will show us someone who will give us those answers and that person, or being as the case may be, will be the essential element of the X-Files.

Until then I have three other choices. Second runner up is the CSM because he represents the "dark side" and the conspiracy.

First runner up is Mulder's father, Bill Mulder, who got caught up in the whole mess and passed the baton unwittingly or perhaps deliberatly along to his son.

But my first choice is Samantha Mulder. She propelled everything Mulder did. She was his primary inspiration and represented the hope necessary to any and all quests of the humanity's endeavor in its search for the truth.
