Your idea of a story line sounded good. I would have liked them to look for William but at least they acknowledged the loss of their son.

I have to agree that the chasing Samantha remark was a little strange but I could see it necessary for those who didn't know Samantha's story or Mulder's quest.

As for the statements/comments/references regarding chasing after monsters in the night, always moving toward darkness, etc. I had to think back and yes, the vast majority of scenes found in the tv show were at night, in dark rooms or places, in scary settings, etc. I think that those comments helped to set the stage for the transitions at the very end. Darkness into light ie. the sunny ocean and a rowboat just for the two of them. I frankly thought that part was just as revealing as any of the other scenes in the movie--well worth waiting for. But then I am just a silly old romantic optimist who likes happy endings.
