Subject: DD's salary

There was a big write up in the paper here about DD's salary per ep in season 8. It was quoted as $700,000 per ep but I thought is was more like $400,000. The paper said that compared to the salaries of say Friends who only do a half hour ep, DD's salary was still quite low.

Then the readers were asked to send in their opinions as to whether they thought someone was worth that much money.

Then they compared the US TV salaries to those of our top drama actors. Bearing in mind that our dramas run for 42 eps per year. Our highest paid actor gets $7,000 per ep. The next two under him get just under $5,000 per ep and the junior actors in the same drama series get $1,700 per ep. I guess per ep for these shows means per week. A base level bank manager here gets in the vicinity of $1,200 a week so in comparison, a TV actor is definitely not in the rich and famous category. People on 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours [both, very sappy in my opinion, Aussie soap operas] get as low as $350 per half hour ep which is aired 5 days a week. These figures are quoted from the paper so are probably an approximation at best. But actors in Australia have to keep working forever either in television or theatre or elswhere because there is no way their salary for a few eps can set them up for life as with those in the US. That's why our people try to make it in Hollywood [yay for Toni Collette and Russell Crowe et al]

I just thought it was interesting to compare. I intend to read the letters in response to see if people think actors are worth $700,000 plus per ep. I assume most will say they are not. What do you all think or are you all used to it by now?
