Dad's journal: Day #1

'Left for Storm Lake this morning. Appropriately named as it poured rain all day. When I commented to Kande that she looked like a "drowned rat", a small animal came up and kicked me in the shin.

We're staying with the Smith family. I suspect this is not their actual name as I noticed how they hid all their mail, personal papers, etc. when Kande came into view. *Sigh*, you'd think I would have gotten used to this reaction after raising her for all these years.

Thought we'd lost Uncle Gordon today. Turned out, Kande had padlocked his bike to a tree since he had almost beat her yesterday in a race. Kande does not like to lose.'
