In my experience at work, adults (over 30) seem to hide their relationships if one or both is married. If there is a divorce actually in progress these folks aren't quite so secretive and the word gets out. More often than not the innocent spouse(s) are the last to find out and get hurt the most. The timelines seem to depend on just when the divorce papers are filed or started and once those papers are filed, it probably was quite a bit less than a year when they first started seeing each other outside of the workplace.

I suppose six years would be understandable if there were strict rules about coworkers fraternizing. However in Mulder and Scully's case I just can't believe that they didn't know how each other felt about their feeings toward each other. If Scully didn't care for Mulder, she certainly could have left the bureau for a different career in medicine or forensics. M and S seemed to act more like a married couple (at work) than a lot of other married couples I know. What they did outside of the job we don't have much information about but it's fun to try to guess!
