Thanks for responding, DBTL. As you say, high school or college students who may be attracted to each other are in a somewhat different situation. I can completely understand two people meeting (and being attracted to) each other when they're high school freshmen, but not actually starting to date until they're seniors or something like that. You're still getting to know yourself at that age, so it's not likely (although not completely unheard of) that you'd want to risk a wonderful friendship for a possible romance at that stage of your life. Also, there are limits to where the relationship can progress to at that age. I mean, 16-year-olds can't get married (at least in most places!).
Adults in their 30s generally have less reason to draw things out for more than a year or two. Even three or four years is *maybe* understandable, especially if you're having to deal with other issues (i.e. deaths of your relatives, alien abductions, career problems, cancer, etc.) during the time you're "getting to know" your beloved. Even under those circumstances, however, SIX years just seems a bit ridiculous.
