Virtually everyone in our little town has a dog. Honestly, I've never seen so many dogs in all my life. And the majority of my friends have had animals. It's a little difficult for me to understand why anyone would choose not to have an animal, unless they travelled a lot and could not care for it properly.

When I was growing up, we always had animals. My mom wasn't the biggest animal lover, but somehow we managed to have them. We primarily had cats and the occasional dog, mouse, turtle, mice, etc. I got to take mice home from school when I was in 2nd grade but had to give them away because they ate the bedroom curtains. So I was thrilled when my daughter wanted hamsters and a guinea pig because I've never had them.

My oldest daughter wants to be a vet and we try to encourage both kids in whatever they're interested in. In fact, she and my husband are going out very, very early this weekend to help a friend of ours, a wildlife ranger, band birds to track their migration habits. She is absolutely thrilled.

My sister-in-law does wildlife rescue -- primarily she works with birds -- but they have tons of animals. I almost think there's something missing in someone's DNA makeup if they don't at least long for a pet. It's hard to for me to understand anyone who wouldn't have one. Almost as if they're afraid to commit to anything.

Our dog was a rescued dog too and I sometimes long to throttle her. She's a boxer and has the sweetest personality and is very protective of all children. The thing that drives me crazy about her is that she tortures our cats. And sometimes she jumps our fence and will absolutely refuse to come to anyone except my husband. She always returns after about half an hour, but I've looked pretty silly trying to chase her down.
