But until I have time to really take care of them properly, I just don't want to have a lonely animal around. Neither of us is retired and put in long hours at our jobs. Since our nest is empty with no kids except the last one home during the summer while in college, we are able to spend time doing things we couldn't while the nest was "full."

Our list includes several aquariums full of all sorts of fish, two different dogs// cats, chickens (chooks) and steers when we lived out in the country and the assorted baby birds the kids found that fell out of their nest--usually featherless and didn't live too long.

We have two "adopted" dogs in California--they fill the need for now as we get there once a year and spend time out there with our son and his family.
