Nira raised her head, divergent stare bright as it noted the approach of the tailed Vhistael. The pinpoints of light surrounding his frame, marking his energy, disappeared after a few moments of orientation on the child’s part, and what she now saw with human eyes only affirmed what had already been suspected by scent. He was of the water brood, as she was, and this must be the keeper of the house, the guardian of the books. But what had he said? Nira tilted her head to one side in wonderment. A confused expression was reflected in her auric eye (the violet one stayed as profound as ever, lost from reaction to all events in its enduring inner introspective) and a small sound piped from the bottom of her throat. It was the beginnings of a word, and Nira closed her eyes to concentrate as the sounds reverberated up her windpipe. A harsh ‘C’ sound shaped first, followed by the grueling process of moving lips to create a long ‘ahhh’ noise. “C… aaaa… ca… nnnn…. t. Can’t.” Nira wasn’t quite sure if it was the right word, but the hum that had echoed throughout her body as she had spoken had given her a blithe sort of joy, a treat to be savored indeed. Now that her message (or something close to it) had been sent, Nira resumed staring at Melln with her usual blank gaze, the massive manuscript lying open on her lap with what must have been crushing weight.
