Subject: `the heart asks pleasure first

Words failed him. He tried thinking instead, but that failed him too. It was as if someone had lowered a huge black curtain in front of his eyes, thus rendering him unable to do much else other than stare blankly at it. He tried peering through it, but could not find an opening, and when he tried peering underneath, found that it had been nailed to the floor. Flash tilted his head to the side in struggling comprehension. The Ice Tundra, indeed the whole of Cascade Mountains, was a thing of the past. Foreboding, cold and eerie after its abandonment. And then in his mind it ceased to exist.

Yet there it was. Larger than life. The sun hung cheerfully in an endless deep blue sky, beaming down at the earth, and the snow shimmered and glistened as if agreeing that today was indeed a fine day. Laid-back, warm and pleasant. Flash raised a quivering black muzzle into the air as he inhaled the sweet, refreshing smells of home. He could smell others here, and there were pawprints in the snow. He wandered if... no, who'm I kidding? he sighed softly. Ice Baby would've moved on after he, being the selfish young brute he was, had abandoned her nearly three years ago when she had needed him most, all because... because... he couldn't even remember. As much as he still carried an unbearable longing for her, he secretely hoped she had moved on, started a new life, a happy one.

The memory of his pups and what he'd allowed to happen to them he had buried deeper at the back of his conscience than he thought possible to retrieve again. At the time he was self-centered and childish and didn't want to think about it. He still didn't, but intense feelings of guilt had since emmerged and were now permanentaly swirling round in the pit of his stomach, clawing and biting and nagging at him that there was nothing he could do about it now, but they'd be reminding him...

Suddenly something made the curtain lift and violently yanked him back to the present. He looked up and saw an eagle gliding overhead and it gave another high-pitched screech. The Ice Tundra was back. He was glad, nearly ecstatic, to be back home, at the same time as he felt like turning around and running off again before someone saw him. He couldn't face looking anyone in the eyes. Maybe he'd faint and then they'd perhaps leave him alone. Or he could just make a run for it now. But then what had he come back for? He wasn't sure there was anything or anyone to go back to; if he was someone else, he certainly wouldn't want someone like him coming back.

Flash had a better idea. He lowered himself onto his haunches instead, then onto his stomach. He'd lie there for a bit and let nature run its course; if no one saw him, then he'd just stay there a bit longer until somebody did. If he was seen, then, well, he'd just have to hope for the best and go in guns-a-blazing.
