I want to agree with you..., but I am having trouble with your comment - that IV is a college town. I see IV as being apart of SB.

Not even close. IV is very much different from SB and, as anyone who has driven/walked it's streets at 1 AM can attest, is definitely a college town. It is virtually all student (both UCSB and SBCC) and is the most densely populated area in SB county. It starts literally 50 yards from the Thunderdome, which is one reason that IV support is so good.

And with that in mind, I don't see UCSB as having a significant advantage/potential over anybody except those with a commuter school reputation. Shall I say Fullerton?

Not even close again. UCSB does have a good base of support (or potential support) from the actual city of SB. Unlike Poly, there are still a lot of grads in the area. Like Freg (I think?) said though, athletics hasn't always been the outlet for alumni support, so a tradition needs to be developed. It'll take some winning to do that at first. It's too bad that the men's basketball program was allowed to "rot on the vine" for so many years because now things sort of have to start over.
