Subject: Sail Back Saturday - Script vs Scene - What Happened To The Sunglasses?

Battery Explosion

I thought I would include this scene from S9 Persian Gulf because of the previous thread on the sunglasses.

Sometimes the writers get the bad wrap for what is seen on screen, when like here it seems the writer was over ruled in an effort to make the scene even less realistic than it was. The sunglasses the writer included were removed.

Harm was supposed to be wearing sunglasses when the battery exploded, which of course would have been a barrier to mitigate the acid from the battery.

In the script of the office scene, which is not part of the clip even Mac notes the glasses.

TURNER
Any idea what happened with his
car, Mac?

MAC
The battery blew up in his face.
Lucky for him, he had sunglasses
on...kept the acid away from his
eyes.

The glasses reference was removed of course in the scene.

Also removed was the acid on his face causing scabbing etc.
The acid that is on his face doesn't seem to be a source of bother :-).

EXT. JAG HEADQUARTERS - PARKING LOT - DAY

Harm and Mac exit the building and walk to their respective
cars.

HARM
What d'you think, he lied in his
pre-trial agreement? Nobody's
that stupid, Mac.

MAC
Maybe not, but I'll feel better
when the diamonds are secured.

Mac shivers a little, and not from the cold.

MAC
Ever since that CIA agent went
missing....

HARM
Van Duyn, your diamond expert?
You don't know that he's missing.
You just don't know where he is.

MAC
I've got a feeling, Harm...
something's gone wrong.

Harm stops and looks at her.

HARM
One of your premonitions? Forget
it, Mac...nothing's gonna go
wrong. See you at the bank.

Harm goes to his car and Mac keeps walking toward hers.


5 HARM'S CORVETTE 5
Harm puts sunglasses on, then gets in, inserts the key and
turns it. Nothing happens. He tries the horn, turns the key
back and forth, tries the lights...all those things we do in
the vain hope the battery's not really dead...but it is.
Harm sighs, gets out, flips the seat forward and opens the
battery compartment behind the seat.


6 ON MAC 6
She turns to look back and sees Harm leaning into the car to
examine the battery. She doesn't know what he's doing, but
REACTS to a sudden LOUD TWUMP! which causes the rag top to
billow outward and Harm to stagger backwards.

MAC
Harm?


7 ON HARM 7
Momentarily stunned, his face turning a blotchy red from
"splatters of battery acid, he tears off his sunglasses and
lets them fall to the ground as Mac rushes over.

7 CONTINUED: 7

Harm's rubbing at his face with one hand while feeling around
blindly with the other. Mac reaches out to take his arm. At
her touch, Harm starts, jumps and whirls around, till now
unaware she was there.

MAC
Are you all right?!

HARM
What? Did you say something?

8 HARM'S POV - MOS 8

Harm sees Mac's lips move but WE HEAR NOTHING EXCEPT THE HIGH­PITCHED RINGING IN HIS EARS.

MAC
(what Harm doesn't hear)
[What happened? Are you okay?]

9 BACK TO SCENE 9

As Harm realizes....

HARM
(too loud)
I can't hear you.
(looking around)
I can't hear anything at all.............

Off Harm.

FADE OUT.

This also is one of my least favorite episodes, with probably the scrabble game being my favorite part which is kind of sad lol...

The hearing loss also gave them some comedy which apparently they were going for..

They had some good parallels, or imagined ones for me..

The battery which was odd on face value, could have been a parallel to the battery used to power the electrical torture in Paraguay. Some marks etc could have further brought that home.

In a passing remark in the script he was somewhat dejected he couldn't go with her.. but no biggie..

Yet, he was taken out of the picture--Sadik's plan..

He went from rescuer and protector to liability, and since he wasn't badly hurt quite aware of that-going back to his dream and need to go after her--but now he couldn't..

There should have been a scene of him in distress..instead he didn't seem to give it a passing thought.

Though I think Harm if the character was played true to type would have found a way..or heck made a phone call to get someone to watch her back..

Like the stuff with Webb and Tanveer-- it all just made me think well if Harm were there lol...
