Brief remarks after my first viewing of the film:

First, I have to start off by saying I enjoyed this movie more than the first.

Second, though I still think CGI for Gollum was a bad idea, they pulled it off better than I expected; also his characterization was quite well done.

Third, the Battle of Helms Deep -- very nice.

Fourth -- Ents attacking Isengard -- again nice.

Now for some of the bad parts: should have ended after the confrontation with Saruman as in TT and not before that confrontation. This could have been done, very easily, if they had not added the 10 - 15 mins of "IS Aragorn dead? Let's show him with Arwen with a pg love scene."

And of course, I think where Frodo ended up with Faramir was wrong -- totally out of synch with the books, and that addition should not have been there.

I can understand not showing Shelob yet -- Jackson said he wanted the time sequence to match in the parts.. unlike in the books. But again, he should have ended with the confrontation with Saruman.

Now Jackson has, imo, too much to do in the next one -- but we shall see.

My grade: A-. Would have been an A if he didn't add his own scenes which detracted from the characters as Tolkien had them.
