  • Time to bring the looooove back to MoN! -- T'yin and Viouth, 13:04:20 12/02/04 Thu
T'yin, why don't you take a break? You have been mending my harness since you broke your fast. It is difficult work to manage when your eyes start to blur like that.

The greenrider allowed a faint smile to cross his lips as he struggled with needle and thread, hunched over his dragon's fraying harness. 'I'll take a break soon,' he promised the concerned green, glancing up briefly in a vain attempt to relax his eyes by admiring his lifemate, stretched out in the afternoon brilliance. Her viridian hide sparkled with a fresh coat of oil, marred slightly by a few lingering flecks of blood from a recent kill. 'And I did spend a few hours oiling you, so my fingers are well-rested, even if the rest of me is not,' he added with a soft chuckle, dropping his gaze back to the harness twined securely about his long fingers. Despite his jest, his hands were beginning to tremble with the intense detailing--but, as former Weyrlingmaster, he would not suffer himself to fly unsafely any more than he would a beginning rider.

Amusement warring with concern in jewel-like eyes that whirled with a rainbow's worth of hues, Viouth rested her long snout on her forepaws and decided that she would bask for another hour or so before forcing her lifemate to eat something. Though sated herself, she could feel his stomach rumble angrily.

    There was a time...

The beast shifts from it's position, legs drawing beneath the bulk of a furred frame then extending, allowing the creature to rise. Her eyes slowly open into the morning, aware of the blur of creatures swarming around her before the first glimmers of light draw into her gaze. It is a pattern that surrounds her, unchanging and constant, harmless in its own monotony, except for those who knew better.

There was a time when you would...

The beast draws her tailblade close to her flank, knowing the frailty that callous shells kept hidden. Skin was soft if a scowl was not, and she could hurt them so easily. Best to be careful.

She walks against the current, unseen and seeing all.

There was a time when you would at least...

Ears slick back against an ebony head, sensation dipping into controlled nothing as paws pad against concrete sidewalk, claws never clicking on the pavement.

The world fades to black and white.

There was a time when you would at least snarl...

A glimmer of something lost. Something red amongst the flow of grayscale. Immediately everything within her soul hones in upon it. Him. A young boy crying on the curb.

He doesn't see as the beast walks up behind him, her breath warm on his hunched back. He doesn't quiver as she curls up around him, head placed comfortingly in his lap. He says nothing as quietly she whispers to him, for he does not even feel her warmth. All he knows is suddenly that inner cold is gone, he is free to join the game again. In a swift motion, he is up and gone...

    Crimson fades to white.

    The beast shivers.

There was a time when you would at least snarl before you bent over backwards for someone.

    Not today. Not today.

    Not to...

    "Bitch!"

The beast jerks backwards as an unforgiving bullet buries itself in her flesh.

    "Coward!"

Lips curl back, instincts flowing free. The animal within rips free from human standards, and reflexes dodge the next shot.

"Ugly know-it-all excuse for an over-achieving, over-bearing fool!"

The tail-blade arches high, and a bystander, not seeing the weapon rise, is sliced in two with the motion. Something within the creature spasms, and she twists her neck to the side, staring listlessly at the gore behind her.

    "You're an idiot!"

Rows of jagged teeth are bared as the femme's snarl ripples with surprising ease from a dry throat. Another bullet tears into her shoulder, and the beast swivels, trying to find the source.

Monotony disrupted. The world holds a gun. Man, woman, child step forward from the blur, wielding a thousand thundering rounds... the beast cries out as bullets pierce her body, somehow stopping short of the heart. Her own blood pours down her sides and mingles pointlessly with the corpse behind her.

    The corpse doesn't care.

"Give up" Pain. "Keep going" Shot. "Do this" Blood. "Forgot that" Death. "Help me" Metal. "Leave me alone" Cold. "Damn you" Unforgiven. "You're so cute" Trial. "Are you okay" Slavery. "I'm fine stop asking" Lost. "Go to hell" Gone. "Save me" Gore. "Give up" Pain. "Keep going" Shot. "Do this" Blood. "Forgot that" Death. "Help me" Metal. "Leave me alone" Cold. "Damn you" Unforgiven. "You're so cute" Trial. "Are you okay" Slavery. "I'm fine stop asking" Lost. "Go to hell" Gone. "Save me" Gore. "Give up" Pain. "Keep going" Shot. "Do this" Blood. "Forgot that" Death. "Help me" Metal. "Leave me alone" Cold. "Damn you" Unforgiven. "You're so cute" Trial. "Are you okay" Slavery. "I'm fine stop asking" Lost. "Go to hell" Gone. "Save me"

    ENOUGH!

An eruption of crimson death surges out in a vast circle from the dying creature, her blood and spirit dancing some final tango of despair as the enormous circle of pain rises, crests, and falls. Drowning, and carrying the remains of burnt memories out into the darkness.

As the creature falls, her eyes, slowly fading rubies, stare without tears into the remnants of what was already gone...

  • I can't believe I forgot to post this! >,<;; -- Shrarrs, 11:05:04 06/27/04 Sun

'The part of the world that is ours by right is lush and rich, emerald and crimson -- the colors of life in full bloom. We Shrarrs are plentiful here, in our lands, and those who are not Shrarr do not dare challenge us in our prime. Our brothers, the Rhauf, prefer the drier, higher lands that are north of us; their colors are dirt and metal, brown and grey. They are fewer than we in number, smaller than we in flesh, and weaker than we in battle -- but they are as cousins to us, and we suffer no harm to come to them from any not-Rhauves.'

Three small, wire-furred cubs fidgeted in place, eyes huge and alert and looking everywhere but at the aged male who sat calmly in front of them. He ignored their restlessness with a soft, paternal smile and continued his teachings.

'We and Rhauves are strongest on these lands, but across the great not-rivers are other lands, as wide and as fertile as our own. On the smallest of those lands, Renwos hold their own by being so many and so intelligent -- they work the metal from the lands of the Rhauves into strange shapes and create lightning from water and air to make the metal live. They are skilled, but small and not-warriors, so they make weapons from the lightning and metal to survive when they are threatened. Most do not fight Renwos for that very reas-- Pay attention, shrarrans!'

The elder cracked his whip-like tail in front of three youthful faces, and the cubs swiftly jerked to attention, entreating eyes widening in surprise and an attempt to please. The white-ticked red male fluffed his fur in a half-conscious stretch, then coiled his twenty-foot tail once around his paws and then pooled its lean, sinuous length between his proud body and his young charges. Then, dark grey eyes catching and holding each cub's avid gaze, he continued.

'Most wicked are the Manitu, heavy and long-bodied beasts whose fangs and claws are fierce, but tempers fiercer. A Manitu poses little danger to an adult Shrarr with reasonable fighting prowess, but our cousin Rhauves face them as equals on the battlefield, and Manitu can even defeat the Renwos' clever metal beasts. Manitu are sly, vengeful creatures who can live in any weather or heat, though they prefer the darkness of not-day or of cavern to the bright sun. Beware them, shrarrans, for they will not hesitate to--'

Three pairs of eyes were wide, and three little bodies were quaking. The elder modified his next words and simply ended, '--to hurt you. And when you are grown, you will not fear them -- you will protect others who fear them from the Manitu themselves.' The big male reached down his long muzzle and brushed his chin against the top of each cub's fuzzy head lightly. 'You will become great hunters, shrarrans.' Then, as he straightened with only the slightest twinge of aged scar tissue somewhere in his flank, he continued.

'Lastly, there are the Tzai, who live in their own lands apart from all of us (for, you understand, each family has its own lands -- we and Rhauves are kin). They are strange beasts in form but reasonable in mind; they are not too aggressive, but they are strong and swift and skilled in battle and the hunt. They, unlike all the rest and we Shrarrs, live lonely lives, only coming together to raise offspring and then parting again. Their lands are open and golden-green with health, and they fight Manitu even more than Shrarrs do.'

The elder smiled gently at the cubs' attentive gazes, then nodded once and deeply. 'You have listened to me long enough, shrarrans. Go play. Your mother--' he had smelled his daughter long minutes ago as she approached, and then as she waited at a safe distance, '--is waiting for you. You were very good today, my shrarrans. I will see you tomorrow.'

The cubs bumbled forward, attached themselves with fur and claw to the adult's forepaws and tail in a youthful embrace, then detached just as quickly to shamble outside, pouncing each other's long tails and rippling fur as they went. The male watched them go fondly, then rose and stretched his aging but still strong body. Only a few joints and muscles resisted the thorough pull with a burning sensation, and he curled one lip in a faintly amused grin.

    Old, but far from invalid.

  • A funny. :D -- a Hajrar, 11:30:57 06/08/04 Tue
It's a big thing for a Hajrar to be exiled from his clan. You know? Especially on Nishao Kalimn, where there aren't many clans to begin with, and none of them takes exiles in. Especially on Nishao Kalimn, where there are reptiles big enough to eat even the biggest Hajrars in one gulp, where even the plants want to take a bite out of you.

I think they're just overreacting. I was exiled a few moons ago (that judging from Eral, original home to all 'rars like me), and I'm doin' just fine. And I'm not even that spectacular a 'rar, either. Just your average black. Grew up on this planet, survived it... got kicked out for somethin' I didn't even do... the usual. And I really don't see what's so difficult about living alone here, in the world of green and gold and serpents.

    But then again...

Thunder shook the ground, a low crash that seemed to last forever and a day. Eventually, the nonstop rumbling woke a shaggy mass of ebony, and he tilted his long, powerful muzzle to groggily eye the sky.

The clear, jade-emerald sky. The one without any clouds, or lightning. The clear, cloudless sky that just made thunder...?

Nggll made a disgruntled noise and opened his other eye, flexing random muscles until his head swung off the fertile earth, bits of moist soil sticking to his lower jaw and chin. Long, expressive ears splayed to the side, giving him quite the comical expression, the Hajrar peered perplexedly at the sky and listened to the thunder rattle his bones. The ragged edges of his wing membrane were vibrating in a most ticklish way, and he hauled his bulk upright and twitched his wings until the edges ceased to pool limply on the shaking earth.

His thoughts were processing quite slowly, but they went something like, Now, why is there thunder without a storm? A pause where the black squinted and lowered his muzzle. Why isn't the thunder stopping?

A sharp crrrack! made the predator jump in surprise, wings halfway to flaring defensively before he caught himself. Lightning must have struck a tree.

Only... when he looked up, there still weren't any clouds. And there hadn't been a flash with that noise.

Nggll made another disgruntled sound and pawed at the end of his muzzle with one heavy, vaguely feline paw to clear the dust out of his nostrils. He snorted, sneezed, snorted again, then sniffed the pollen-rich air and sneezed again. In spring, even a Hajrar can't smell much other than flowers and greenery.

A sleepy yawn pried the black's deadly jaws open, revealing rows of razor-sharp, curving teeth to the no one that was watching. Blinking repeatedly, he slowly realized that the thunder was getting louder. His long, leaf-matted fur was beginning to ripple in messy waves, and a leaf drifted to the ground from the vicinity of his long, arched neck. He blinked again at it, then lifted his muzzle. Trees leaps and leaps wide blocked his view.

Another crrrack! and no flash to accompany it. And the thunder grew louder. For a moment there, his teeth actually rattled.

Finally, his long ears swept upright, and he wrinkled his expressive muzzle. Then, in the tree farthest from him that he could still see, a hairline crack appeared in its trunk; tiny flakes of bark drifted to settle on its thick, gnarled roots. Huh? Nggll thought intelligently, one furred brow arching in confusion.

There was a creaking sound like trees swaying in a hellacious storm, and then the tree snapped in two and toppled towards him.

A startled, half-terrified shrieking howl escaped the black Hajrar and he leapt into the air, massive wings flaring out and with one downsweep sending him forty feet up. Several more strong beats took him out of the tree's range, but he kept flying until he was above the gargantuan trees and could look down at them.

At the moment, his thoughts went something like, WHAT BROKE THE TREE?!

Hajrars, unfortunately, can't hover easily, so Nggll cast himself in tight little circles while the dust, thrown clumps of earth and bark and shredded roots, and bits of leaves settled. When it did, he nearly forgot to keep his wings beating.

    Serpents. Serpents broke the tree.

Serpents with a girth wider than the tree trunk, which was wider than the black's entire wingspan. Serpents half a mile long, by the looks of them--serpents with eyeballs bigger than the black's body (not counting legs and insanely long tail, of course).

Serpents that were marked in gold and orange and purple, and one that was more black than anything else. A herd of serpents, all moving with languorous ease through the huge forest, leaving a trail of broken trees and deep, slithery tracks in their wake.

Nggll raised one forepaw to scrub at his eyes. It's too early for this.

  • I'll fucking kill them. -- rage, 21:07:39 05/03/04 Mon

There is a line drawn within every wild beast's soul that, when crossed, results in instantaneous and brutal death.

This particular beast only has a few lines. But one has been crossed, and now they will die.

The very air shattered with a scream of primal fury, a soul-crushing shriek of absolute, untempered, unstoppable rage. Young high school students milling in the halls all froze, eyes bulging and sudden terror racing through their system; deep in their gut, they knew such a sound meant death for creatures as helpless and as civilized as they. A few females screamed, their voices thin and quavering; a few of the males looked for quick exits.

A sound like thunder rolled through the tightly-packed, fear-drenched masses, scents of sweat and adrenaline heavy on the warm, stale air. Unable to identify the direction from whence the sounds came, the children began to move restlessly, some trying to forge back into the presumed safety of their classrooms. Some simply huddled near stairways or in doorways, too proud to return to the adults and too fearful to stay in the open halls. The school's normally-clogged arteries were swiftly emptying; a rare thing with five minutes remaining before the next bell rang.

The beast had a few particular scents in her nostrils, and they weren't so much actual chemical tags as visceral impressions of prejudice and potential danger. Some of the students had targeted one that she guarded; the beast did not take well to threats to those she claimed as her own. She would kill them, no matter their youth and their ignorance. They did not deserve to live.

Golden and white fur rippled, reflecting the fluorescent lights with an unhealthy yellow pallor, each stride sending waves up the thick, once-groomed pelt that was spiked and bristling with unbridled fury. A second snarl reverberated, tearing the air apart and visibly shaking the beast's chest as she stalked stiff-legged, tail lashing viciously behind her, iron-sharp claws digging furrows and pits into the tiled floor with each step. The great cat walked upon her hind legs through one of the few empty halls, amber-brown eyes burning with a red haze that obscured all. She followed the scents, tasting more than smelling their trails.

The first human to see the hunter was a small, thin girl that stood at the intersection of three halls, near a door to the outside; she screamed as the hulking beast approached and ran in a dead sprint towards the other end of one hall. A frightened hush of conversation rose at her alarm, and a few brave souls peeked around the corner. Another growl thundered forth, and more screams split the air in abject terror.

The lion did not break her swift, measured, stalking gait as she rounded the corner and surveyed a short hall filled with human young. Those she sought were near the end, pressed to the lockers and as confused and as horrified as everyone else in the vicinity. Burning orbs locked onto the trio of males, black-rimmed lips drew back tautly to reveal long, glistening fangs, and rounded ears flattened painfully tightly to a golden-furred skull. A snarl more liquid and more acidic than all before it seemed to set the very air a-flame, and the great cat crouched, her tail whipping with more fervor than ever.

Those who had dared cross a line that they never knew existed found themselves unable to move, terror locking them into place, and they all knew that this creature that focused on them with steely intensity would kill them. They would never know their crimes.

A feral scream transformed itself into an earth-shaking roar as the lion lunged, two unimaginably swift leaps bringing her within range of the children. They cried out in absolute fear as one huge paw swept into the air, hook-like claws shining dully in the artificial light, and descended upon the foremost of them. The claws played little part in his death; the great paw simply crushed his skull into the so-hard floor with a sickening crunch. As blood and gore began to leak viscously from his shattered head, the lion drew her reddened paw back and stared with red-veiled eyes at the remaining two.

They, too, screamed, in shock at their companion's sudden grisly death and in fear for their own short-lived lives. One tried to run, and the hunter raked her claws down his shoulders and back in one unhesitating strike, the very tips of the scythe-shaped weapons shattering vertebrae. He fell, system in shock and mind already feeling the haze of death, and the lion was merciful by taking one swift step forward and crushing his neck in her jaws. The blood of the youth was acrid on her tongue, and she let the crimson liquid drain from between her teeth as she raised her head and focused hawk-like on the last.

This one had been the initiator, she felt, the one who suggested to his comrades that they become antagonists to the lion's charge -- the one who unknowingly sentenced all three boys to death. No realization was in his white-rimmed, rounded eyes as he shoved frantically against the locker, trying to back away into the very wall as though he could escape the lion.

Rich, salty, metallic blood dribbled down the great cat's muzzle in small rivulets, staining golden and white fur scarlet and dripping steadily onto the already gore-soaked floor. The hunter drew in one last breath and roared her fury, barely three feet from the boy; he clapped his hands over his ears, terror momentarily giving way to pained deafening in his expression. So distracted, he didn't realize that he had been disemboweled until torn, ragged chunks of his intestines fell bloodily to the floor. Unbelievable agony flooded his system, and the blackness of death that came when the lion's jaws crushed his skull was almost a relief to electrified nerves.

The hunter didn't move for a long moment, the foul taste of human flesh and blood stinging at her mouth and the stench of death clinging to her crimson-stained fur. Then, she let the shattered body fall from her jaws, and she turned away from the massacre of three human children. With heavy, measured paces, the killer walked away.

  • These are the lips that taste no freedom / This is the test of flesh and soul / These are the fears that swing overhead / These are the weights that hold you down / These are the looks that chill to the bone / This is the voice of silence no more! -- who else?, 20:08:23 04/28/04 Wed
Bands of pliable, yet unbreakable steel quivered. Large, dark, globule-like eyes watched the metal with a vague sense of detached curiosity, a scientific mind waiting for the experiment to complete itself, waiting for the results. It had no emotional involvement with the experiment -- just time, finances, and equipment. It didn't care about the actual outcome; it just cared that an outcome came about in a timely manner.

The bands shook again, as though terrified out of their wits. The metal was wrapped securely around a thick forelimb that bulged with corded muscle, coarse hairs bristling as the leg tensed again, testing the bands' tensile strength. Metal versus flesh, and already, tiny white lines -stretch marks of a sort- were beginning to appear in the bands.

Objective and faintly bored, the beige-robed Jhee watched, one hand's ten thin fingers drumming softly on the edge of a sparsely-cushioned seat. It was on the other side of impenetrable walls, outside the technological prison that encased the feral beast; it had nothing to fear if the outcome proved flesh stronger than steel.

Dirtied golden fur stood on end as muscles writhed once again, sending more pronounced ripples down the bands that constrained each powerful limb. A tufted tail thrashed, free and defiant and liquidly graceful, as heaving, gasping breaths rocked the taut creature where it hung, suspended in mid-air by its well-polished, scientific shackles. Long, glistening fangs graced the air as the jaws parted to pant, and the upper lip curled high in a silent snarl.

The Jhee leaned forward as the striations in the steel bands became more obvious; the experiment would soon come to a close. This strange feline creature had been picked up in some unnamed system of a nearby spiral galaxy, and it had become violent when captured. The Jhee's fellows designated to it the responsibility of testing the beast's true potential in order to see if its DNA was worthy of being catalogued in the famed DNA banks of the renowned species of ethic-lacking geneticists.

The primal expression of fury never left the golden creature's face as it slowly, painstakingly, curled around itself. The only noise in the computer-monitored cell was the pained shriek of gradually ripping steel. The long, agile tail ceased its lashing and curled as the beast brought its limbs closer to its white-furred stomach in a slow-motion display of raw strength.

The pale Jhee leaned forward a little bit more, blinking swiftly to clear the dust from its large eyes. It had previously hypothesized that the creature wouldn't be able to break its bonds; and this scientist was so rarely wrong. The beast's muscle mass and density indicated that it shouldn't be able to tear steel like that.

With one final, agonized shriek of metal, the golden creature fell to the cold floor in a clatter of broken bonds and still-attached shackles. Grey claws suddenly shot from broad paws, and the close-fitting manacles were ripped from flesh with a vengeance. The tortured metal bonds were flung into the sensor-covered walls, and the feline stood on its powerful hind limbs easily.

The Jhee felt chills race down its spine as earth-dark eyes swiveled to settle upon its countenance with a cold fury unmatched by any civilized creature.

  • ...release me... -- my soul, 21:07:03 04/15/04 Thu
What meager sunlight the moon's pale surface reflects into the atmosphere glitters along polished royal purple scales and sleek membranes, and the shadows conceal a cerulean belly and wing undersides. Sapphire ridges shine with a wicked gleam in the filtered light of aging dusk, and two pinpoints of molten silver seem almost too luminous in the darkness. The long-bodied dragon crouches over a small, glowing box, restlessness sending idle ripples of movement down a sinuous tail and short, compact limbs.

For a long while, she is motionless, patient, docile.

Then, something within her chest snaps, and the beast leaps up and backwards, away from the box and her passive, lax position. Violet-sapphire wings that seem too large for the slender frame expand and beat downwards with enough force to powerfully send the dragon into the star-spattered sky. She twists, lithe and supple in her serpentine length, and pumps her wings with untapped strength -- she spirals into the night's cool air, dancing on the winds that caress her sleek body, and forsakes all that is human and worthless below her.

Somewhere deep within the woods -or, perhaps, in the middle of a vast arctic tundra- a lone wolf howls into the night.

  • Gotta stop this shit now. -- ..., 21:49:57 04/11/04 Sun
The creature stood, wings which she felt arching backwards from a sagging back drooped slightly, just after making their presence from the nothingness known.

    "Stop."

Came the voice. Soft, unobtrusive. Huh? Stop. Stop what?

    "Stop."

Again. Word. Single. Banned previously but what for? Simple word of exit in a circle of never ending verbal battering.

    "Stop!"

Oh damn you had to keep coming didn't you, you stupid word. I know what you mean. Leave me alone. Let me be.

    "STOP!"

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME!?!?! Stop the moodswings? Stop clinging? Stop refusing to do what you feel but what you think? Stop trying to make peace by sacrificing yourself? Stop whining over things that don't exist? Stop bitching about a horrible life that's damn near perfect? Is that what you want me to stop? WHAT? IS THAT IT! YOU ASS YOU NON-EXISTANT PART OF ME THAT I WON'T LET GO! NO YOU IDIOT! STAY PUT! YOU'LL RUIN EVERYTHING YOU FOOL! STOP!

    "Stop."

    Stop?

    "Stop."

I can't just say okay... don't you see that? My words always mean nothing? Why trust me anymore. I don't trust me, or my word, why should anyone else?

    "Stop."

What do you want me to say?

"What do you want to say?"

I don't know anymore. My whole life belongs to others. Everything I do I try to do for others. When I don't I hurt. When I do I hurt. My whole life is... not hurt... so why do I say it is?

"I don't know. Why do you?"

    I can't answer that.

    "Try."

    Because it's instinct?

"No. Your instinct is wolf. Betrayed. Your instinct is panther. Hidden. If any instinct still lives in you it is human. Fickle. Biting not for hunt but for murder."

    Then have I lost myself?

    "No."

    What can I do?

    "What WILL you do?"

Every time I set my mind to something it falls apart. Or worse yet, never begins.

"Make it start. Make it stay."

    How?

"Learn. Search. Find the Guides. They have not forsaken you. You have only forsaken yourself."

Find the Guides. My totems. Forsaken myself... upkeep personally?

    "Yes. But more, much more."

Eat right, get fit, make me proud of me. Search not for the love of others, but the love of myself. Look not with blind eyes towards those who offer love, but accept what is given and relish it while you can.

"It is not a matter of time, but a matter of choice."

And have I made the right one?

    Have I?

    How can I be sure?

    "Stop."

The creature is silent, lifting her thin muzzle up to the air, eyeing her forepaws, still bearing the traditional cross and pentacle, one on each, and now so many other religious symbols, stretching up her lanky arms. The once tattered wings still are mended and she stretches them, not seeing but feeling the scars there. A clawed hand rises to her chest, the heartbeat is quick. Frightened. But no longer afraid to admit it.

    Would she fly?

    That remained to be seen.

    No more broken promises.

    Stop?

    No.

    Go.

  • The motherf***ers got in my head / trying to make me someone else instead / but it's my world now -- ..., 13:12:30 04/11/04 Sun
She stood on the edge of the nothingness and stretched out her hand, blind, into that which isn't.

Coarse, spiralled fur brushed her fingers and a low, snarling rumble ground out into the nonexistent air. As the woman recognized the beast, the scarlet hue of the shaggy pelt became apparent, and the blood-red wings that limply draped the creature's back and flanks brushed the hazy ground with ragged edges -- it turned its long muzzle and looked at her from bottomless grey eyes. Hrhhr recognized her as himself, bowed his head, and nosed her palm with a sad, resigned air. "Incarnation of my pain and anguish," the young human murmured quietly, but couldn't find the words to either bless or banish the massive red Hajrar.

She drew her hand back, and the red beast faded, and she reached out again, once more unable to see.

    She touched nothing.

  • Rien. -- ..., 19:50:20 04/04/04 Sun
    Cisekar... just wanted to run.

There was old blood in the soil, making the grass and vines and rare, tiny, precious flowers grow well. She could smell it, and though she hadn't killed anything but prey for seeming ages, she could smell the sin on her own paws. She could smell the pain, the anguish, the misery, and the helplessness. She smelled it in her pawprints, lining the so-sharp edges of her claws, soaked into her fur like some sort of btsashe repayment for the past.

    Only it wasn't the past.

The now. Cisekar wanted to run, but she didn't move, caught between standing and sitting, her muscles quivering to hold her five-foot, well-muscled frame in the awkward position. She didn't move, but she let the tremors race through her long limbs and sculpted body, down her thick, bladeless tail and out along her golden whiskers. She had never before realized that one could kill without ever drawing blood or breaking bones. One could kill by a choice.

    She had.

She had killed. She had destroyed, not completely but well enough, with a choice. And she had known when she made that choice what might happen. What was even half-likely to happen. But, trusting in her own perfection and luck, she made that choice. She chose, and she was wrong.

Cisekar wanted to run, badly, horribly. Every inch of her screamed at her to flee. Just escape and never return, sprint back into the fading sunlight of simplicity, just run.

She couldn't. She knew what she had done, and she knew the pain was hers as well. She would pay for her sin, and she would cry, and she would struggle to make things right again without ever admitting that it was her fault. She had done it. All the blame was on her. And she didn't want to admit that she couldn't escape it. Not even to herself.

The blood of a soul on her paws, scentless and invisible, but oh how it stank and stained the greygold and the ebony. Old blood soaked the ground and made new flowers grow well, but soul blood would not let new flowers grow easily, if at all. Soul blood never went away. She hated what she had done, and she hated that she had been wrong.

    Cisekar wanted to run.

  • Your daily dose of meditation... XD. -- c'est moi, bien sur!, 17:19:21 02/18/04 Wed

A young woman sat cross-legged, bare feet tucked into the folds of her loose cotton leggings and hands laxly cupped, one inside the other. Her long brown hair, usually so tightly restrained at the nape of her neck, billowed in the cool, invigorating wind that promised a new spring to soon relieve a dying winter; the air was brisk and chill across her bare torso and upturned face. Eyes of unfathomable hues were gently closed, countenance relaxed as though asleep; she straightened her spine minutely, adjusting her posture, and felt the cold of the slowly thawing earth seep through her well-worn clothing.

She could hear the music. It sang to her sweetly, tales of spring and love and beauty, tales of grief and pain and horror, a bittersweet song that held the entirety of the universe in its soul-piercing lyrics and primal rhythms. A song of gods and goddesses, of fae and dragons, of men and women. But the music was faint, barely audible, and twined around the fingers of a fresh, fresh wind that tugged on her curls and stole her breath playfully, only to return it seconds later in a powerful gust against her face. The scents of wood smoke, cold water, and muddy earth invaded her nose, and she could smell the barest beginnings of green and flowers.

The awakening earth under her and crystal blue sky above her seemed to fade as her mind turned inward... stilling... quieting... calming. The chilly caress of the wind on her fair skin was abandoned, an inner warmth flaring up as outer senses shut down and internal ones stirred from their sleep of disuse. Her heartbeat was loud in her head, her breathing silent and slow and deep, and she traced the red lines of blood vessels through her body, listening without ears to the precious fluid surge through vein and artery with the urgency of raw life. Multicolored meridians networked her body like a second, ethereal nervous system, connecting seven major orbs of light with their shining lengths.

Slowly, color and thought were both abandoned, and mist and clear watchfulness replaced them. The rainbow that had once been painted throughout the girl faded to a silvery fog that permeated her skin and hung around her in an oval, and with slow concentration, even that last vestige of color was driven outwards until beyond the boundaries of her spirit. She was translucent, invisible, a creature of outlines and light and seven pale, pearly, marbled orbs that spun slowly clockwise without moving.

The lower half of her spine, that which stretched from heart to two finger-widths below her navel, was not transparent. Ivory, silver, and golden glowed that length, and it served as the young woman's core of power, her source of energy that was, in reality, her connection to her gods and the earth's very soul. With a simple mental intention, bronzed gold liquid flowed swiftly from the curving rod of bone and energy, coating the girl's skin in a thick, warm layer of protection and strength. It spread until it covered her entire body, turning the long, spiraling strands of hair copper; it seeped onto what was not there to securely encase a long, leonine tail and dye the tailtuft golden.

She opened her eyes, and they were raw gold, blazing like fire without pupils or whites to mar their alien beauty. A choice was made, and strains of green erupted into the girl's body, billowing and twisting like ink in water as emerald, pine, and sea made their shades known in one vigorous, gleeful dance that swiftly consumed her entire body. The green boiled just under her skin, its leafy hue brushing electrically against the rich amber and sending warmth and shivers chasing each other across her skin. Another choice sent airy gusts of pastels -pink, blue, violet- outwards to surround the woman in clouds of life, merging and expanding until they reached their bounds. There they coalesced into the simultaneous existence of white and black, a sphere of protection that would destroy the negative and purify all else before it could so much as near the girl.

The air was sweet and alive as it filled her lungs in a steady rhythm, and her concentration was aimed downwards at the lowest spinning orb, settled neatly at the base of her spine. It was of many shades of red, some nearing pink and others black, but as though her attention were a match, it ignited into brilliant scarlet flame and began spinning much more quickly than before. Fire and earth and sexual desire made themselves known in her system, waves of pleasure undulating up her spine to crash together in joyful ecstasy within the sanctity of her mind. Her focus shifted to the orange sphere just above it, only an inch or so below her naval, and again aligned with her spine. It erupted into vibrant color and heat, a tingling, powerful warmth filling her belly and heightened senses buzzing with the sheer beauty of the world and the mere act of living.

A smile begged release, and expressive lips curved upwards in as much amusement as joy. The sphere above the other two, settled comfortably in her solar plexus, was a murky yellow, but a thought and mental touch purified it into the finest gold ore and it whirled deosil, matching pace with the others with only slight adjustment and encouragement. The ghostly feeling of keys waiting beneath her fingertips and the smell of crayons blossomed up, creativity at its most free and powerful, and the girl was again struck with the beauty of the world and the urge to express the blissful awe and wonder that she felt. Emerald laced with darker green veins began spinning more quickly next, smoothing into a more vibrant shade as hints of pink ducked through the orb as though shy and coy. Her heart warmed and charged with energy: love existed, and love was all.

The young woman's mind next awakened a smaller orb within her throat, a million shades of blue blurring as it spun and flamed, eloquence and communication and empathy all arising simultaneously. Creativity connected with this, and the red fire powered the creativity, and the orbs spun as one. Violet fire whirled out from a space between and above the again-closed eyes, and though she was unaware of her physical surroundings, she opened her eye and reached out a hand to caress a large, dark jungle leaf, trailing a droplet of dew down its veins with one fingertip. She released the crisp, clear image as that orb, too, danced in accord with its fellows.

The seventh orb hovered just above her head, a white pinprick of light that burned of its own; at the sensation of her softest touch, it exploded into a radiance akin to that of burning magnesium, a white so brilliant that it dazzled the eye until one could imagine nothing brighter. It expanded until its outermost layer reached the staunch shield that surrounded her body; it strengthened it and then contracted, whirling at high speeds, pure and free and divine. The other six orbs sped up and matched its thrilling strength, and the oval of protection on the other side of the girl's gold-lined skin whirled into compliance.

Slowly, the young woman became aware of her measured breathing, the tantalizing touch of the cool wind, and the cold stiffness of the earth beneath her. Green things were not yet come, but they soon would bloom; she smiled at the thought as she opened her eyes and rose with a grace that few humans possessed. Fifteen minutes had passed in the world of the real, and she stretched luxuriously as she felt the power continue to course indomitably through her body. The serene smile swiftly transformed into a fanged grin as she lashed the tail that none could see and padded silently towards the house that awaited her with warmth and tea, every molecule in her being buzzing with energy.

  • ... -- Shrarr, 09:57:38 01/30/04 Fri

For once, Audii had no urge to fight... to hunt... or to share breathing air with any other Shrarr. With a low growl, the silver-ticked black female stalked off into the thick jungle foliage, a precise but small jerk of her tail producing a satisfying snapping noise when a companion tried to follow her. The other Shrarr skittered backwards, properly warned, and Audii vanished.

She supposed it was her coming of age that had gotten her hackles up. She no longer felt like she belonged in this body, and her inability to change it irked her. As she stalked stiff-legged past trees wider than she was long (even -with- her whip-like tail), she exhaled noisily, listening to the soothing undertone of a growl. Not much placated her, but the sound of her own existence was often the key to a little more tranquility.

Adult. Audii found it amusing. She had grown out of the urge to battle for dominance and to crush males into the earth, supposedly, and now could take her 'rightful place' as a huntress in the world. Tsuh. She laughed at the idea, mirthless and cynical. All she was supposed to do now was hunt. Nothing but.

That one annoyed her. Shrarrs were notorious for being mentally unstable, a little less than sane, a little more than just aggressive. They were never depicted as being warriors -- fanatics, psychotic, and war-mongering, yes. Warriors? Of course not. Shrarrs didn't have codes of morals and honor, didn't have any self-pride, and most certainly didn't have the nobility required of a warrior's heart.

Damn those who said it. Audii would do as she pleased, and woe be to the one who tried to tell her otherwise. She was an unusually good fighter, and although she had begun to regret the battles that had made her so, she took pride in her abilities and would not stand down from a challenge. No one could stop her if she wanted to prove them around about the inherent nature of a Shrarr. And whoever said Shrarrs couldn't be warriors would fall to her prowess.

Audii found her refuge in a moss-coated cave, and as she removed herself to its warm, muggy back wall, she snarled long and low. They would all want to stop her. But none of them would succeed. The silver-black femme curled up in her nest of torn vines and collected masses of ivy, laid her long muzzle down on her shaggy forelimbs, and closed her eyes. She would do as she pleased. They couldn't stop her...

The constant growl that underlied her breathing died off as sleep took her.

  • Playing with Rochoi... =^_^= -- two choi, 15:07:30 01/24/04 Sat

It was the height of Kud, the time when Sfacad, the Changer, had both halves of hirs glorious disk bathed in light to guide all choi from one mindset to the other. The night was sweet and the breeze brisk across the plains days south of Cyryn, the Miesins' Home; ice-blue and white-purple stars glittered in the deeply indigo sky like droplets of water shining in the sun, but ivory Sfacad outshone them all with hirs brilliant light. The tall grasses undulated in a wind-caressed dance as small beasts in the night sang.

Kurralis raised hirs head, nostrils flaring as the spring-scented air tantalized hirs senses; hirs sensitive feelers twined under hirs chin, but the soft touch of the wind still elicited tiny explosions of pleasure. Hirs firstmate was curled up at hirs flank, warmth in the cool darkness, and se sighed in utter contentment. The sounds of an awake yet contemplative pride reached hirs long ears, and se flicked one in quiet amusement. There was no conversation between the twenty-eight adults, and the five cubs weren't trying their parents' patience with any youthful antics. It was a night to be alive, and even the younglings felt it.

Chialia stirred, then stretched out, hirs lithe body adjusting slightly to press along the full length of Kurralis' smaller frame. The choi sighed again, eyelids dropping over golden orbs in an expression of pure happiness. Hirs rumbling purr joined the whispering echo of those of other pridemates, and Chialia smiled without opening hirs own eyes. There was peace in the world on such a night.

Kurralis angled hirs head towards hirs firstmate and carefully untwined one feeler from the other, reaching out with the delicate appendage to brush against one of Chialia's own. The other choi shivered pleasurably and gently wound one of hirs feelers around Kurralis', applying just enough pressure in constriction to cause the choi's steady purring to seemingly hiccup when se was hit by the flood of sensation. The purring was no longer steady when it resumed, and Chialia twitched hirs leonine muzzle in a fanged grin. Se usually could lay the smaller choi at hirs paws when se wanted to, but Kurralis never seemed to mind.

However, tonight se wasn't content to succumb to pleasure without having hirs own peculiar sort of revenge upon hirs firstmate. Kurralis canted hirs feline muzzle to get a better look at Chialia, whose ice-blue eyes were still closed in sleepy contentment. The larger choi was sleek and beautifully powerful; hirs glossy pelt was chocolate brown with silvery rosettes scattered in clumps across hirs flanks and spine, and ivory cream stained hirs broad hindpaws and deft handpaws. Se was gorgeous, and just as importantly, se was Kurralis' own.

Chialia felt sweet chills chase down hirs spine as Kurralis began grooming hirs fur with long, thorough strokes of hirs tongue. Chialia's slightly deeper voice joined hirs firstmate's in purring happily, and se twisted, rolling onto hirs back so that Kurralis could groom her soft, almost fluffy belly. Se purred louder, hirs firstmate's warm breath tickling her damp but clean pelt, and languorously braided one of hirs feelers with both hirs own. The smooth slide of delicate, suede-skinned tentacles against one another elicited a burst of renewed purring; Kurralis nuzzled hirs firstmate's stomach gently, eyes half-lidding in pleasure.

Chialia and Kurralis noticed the latening of the night simultaneously: Sfacad had barely slipped from zenith towards the horizon, and the pride's level of purring began to slowly lower as choi drifted off into slumber. Crystalline blue met vibrant gold as the two choi exchanged loving but sleepy looks, and Kurralis stretched out next to hirs firstmate comfortably. Feelers still intertwined securely, the pair snuggled as close as they could manage, tails draping over one another's haunches, and settled themselves to sleep. Chialia tucked hirs muzzle between Kurralis' forearm and chin, exhaled silently, and smiled in hirs heart as se surrendered hirmself to the night.

  • Writing... for the sake of Writing... -- I'm not sure yet, whomever wishes to come..., 13:49:59 01/19/04 Mon
The mother of all Morollas was calm, her eyes of light and dark both void of any revealing emotion, dull, lightless, and yet... at the same time... quite aware of all that was going on. The tattered ear flicked once, and the ebony head moved to the left, revealing the lone saber-fang in its stead. The eyelids closed, moonlight gleaming solely off of the ivory dagger as the female inhaled deeply.

And then the eyes were open and alive again, the ice of power combining with the steady knowing gaze of earth to hold firm the fears and premonitions of the beast before her. The tail blade moved, unquivering in its glide to rest just below the jaws of the beast before her, the jagged edge of death playing easily about the creature's windpipe, moving just below the bulge of the throat as it rose and fell.

The left hand rose, the long-claw curving with delicate strokes about the bulging eyes that watched it. It stopped just between them, pushed against the flesh, then retracted just as swiftly as the small trickle of blood began to fall down the beast's muzzle.

With the utmost of care, the Morolla licked the small drop from her clawtip, and lowered her paw back to the ground, eyes un-moved from their position.

Remind me... What exactly is it that you do?

The beast's jaw quivered, but his chin touched the cold unforgiving steel that lay below, and swiftly he controlled his shaking to the best of his ability.

"I... assist in the end of life."

In the next second, the creature's skull was slammed against the cold steel of the wall behind him, a stream of russet flowing from his nose, and a dry cough racking from his throttled throat. The Morolla's fist shoved painfully against his wind-pipe, the blunt of her tail-blade pummeling the beast directly under its ribs.

    "WHAT DO YOU DO?"

    "I... chhkkkk... kill people..."

The oerri snarled, her fist clenching tighter against the vital passage of air, holding the beast against the wall. The blade rose, and the point pressed painfully against the male's cut, as the power of the roar settled into her eyes and the words that came next were no more then a low hiss of hatred.

    "What... do... you... do..."

    "I MURDER!!!"

    And you die.

The Morolla's tail-blade arches upwards and across the crushed jugular, sending the body slumping to the earth, blood slickening the dark ground.

Skjota'Dyro eyes the head within her paw for a moment, and spits upon it in distaste. Then arching back upon her hind legs, she throws the mind as far from the body as possible, watching the ugly head of Intolerance dissapear from view.

The Morolla falls back to all fours, and as the eyes dim... she runs...

  • Randomness inspired by its first line. XD. -- random Trahe male, 12:53:06 01/19/04 Mon

Big creatures eventually learn to tread softly among their smaller kinfolk. We don't like crushing bones with a misstep any more than someone likes having their bones crushed. Our size also means that we have far less to fear, and less reason to be aggressive towards small beasts who would have a hard time reaching our throat, let alone be able to tear it out. Our only threats are among those of our own size or those larger than us.

Still. Trahes aren't built to tread softly. I was having a hard time not stepping on any bodies, let alone smaller things like tails or paws. Those below me were, I'm sure, a little nervous when they saw my grey bulk pass over their heads -- my paws were often larger than their torsos, and my claws longer than their muzzles. If I were that small, I'd be dodging, rather than hoping a thick-bodied Trahe could successfully avoid stepping on me as I held absolutely still.

They were probably trying to display some confidence in me. I really wished they would just move and save me the trouble.

"Ku-rhim-rheo." I glanced to my right and paused, my golden eyes searching for who had said my name in that gravelly base voice. The speaker turned out to be an Ogrepta, the long-bodied Athian close to my own height of twenty-five feet; he was sprawled loosely among the smaller beasts, some actually curled against him, asleep. "Ku, I need to talk to you."

I raised a furred brow, then carefully walked over deathly-still creatures below me to join the Ogrepta. A few Korats moved hastily so that I could sit down and wrap my bladed tail around me tightly, trying to minimize the space that my bulk required. Sometimes, I hated being in a crowd. (Actually, most of the time. I like company, but I also like room.) "Who are you?"

"Gperi. I have a message for you from Za-shen-sai."

My eyes narrowed; my brother and I had not spoken in years. We lived far apart. "How did you meet him?"

The Ogrepta twisted his long muzzle in a shrug. "It doesn't matter. He asked me to tell you that evil has come upon the land, and it is time to fight or die slowly in the darkness." Gperi levered himself up so that he could look me in the eye as he added, "I also bring news of his death at the hands of this evil. Cha, Ku-rhim-rheo."

Cha. Peace. Peace, when my heart seemed to stop in my chest and my blood froze in my veins. My brother was dead with dire words, and this fool Ogrepta wished me peace. But there was naught else he could wish me.

I nodded numbly. "Thank you, Gperi. Cha."

    Peace...

  • Randomness from my now-filled school notebook... -- Jheyans, 17:39:15 01/10/04 Sat
    Obix ran.

He was tired of running, really; his lower legs burned, and his six-toed paws were half-numb from constantly beating against the rocky, grassless ground. Even his lean arms ached, held so tightly against his narrow chest, and his tail was slung only high enough to avoid dragging the ground. The chill, wintry air dried his throat and burned his lungs, so he tried to breathe only through flared nostrils, chest heaving with lessening efficiency. He was beginning to slow, adolescent muscles gradually refusing to respond to the dregs of adrenaline cycling through his system.

But he couldn't stop. Well, he could, but then he'd be brutally killed and devoured by the slow but doggedly determined kazha loping a few hundred yards behind him. Death by kazha was not an option for the Asaque -- his scaly hunter had already broken the youth's prized possession: his mediating staff.

Obix was far from his clan and aimed away from it, so the blue-and-silver male had little chance of being saved by an older, spear-toting hunter. And there was no hope of reversing direction and heading back; though a rather slow beast in general, the kazha could lunge quickly over short distances. In fact, it could halve the space between itself and its prey within seconds. Obix was slowing and he knew that, once the kazha came close enough, that burst of speed would end in his death.

Where's a Korat when you need one? the adolescent thought desperately, lean frame beginning to tremble. He couldn't regain his former speed, and a glance behind him proved his fears correct: the kazha had almost reached that critical limit, and Obix was faced with the promise of death that he'd outrun for hours. He let out one last call for help, and though he tried to scent the wind for a sign of hope, his nostrils were as dry as his throat and could smell nothing.

A final glance backwards showed the young Asaque the exact stride that carried the kazha over that invisible boundary. Obix let out one last cry and didn't face forward again...

...so he also saw the thick, wooden spear sink into the beast's chest. The kazha's bulky frame tumbled, a gurgling bellow wrenched from its throat. Obix stumbled to a halt and tried to spot his unseen benefactor, but the sudden change in gait after so long a run was too much; he collapsed on numb, tingling legs and tried desperately to catch his breath. His lungs felt like they were going to implode.

Quiet but ungraceful footsteps drew his attention from his pain to his rescuer, and tired golden eyes rose to see, much to his surprise, a human female. She knelt near his head, resting a capable hand on his upper chest to check his heart; the adolescent mutely nodded, and a brief smile flickered across the woman's face.

"I'm Atano Sarah," she introduced, then waited patiently until Obix could sit up and breathe well enough to reply. "My... name is... Obix." He had to pause and work moisture into his mouth before he could add, "I thank you."

"Mhmm," she murmured, unclasping a small canteen from her belt and handing it to the bluish 'taur. He drank in little sips, the cool liquid almost painful, and felt feeling gradually return to his lower body. Atano rose and offered both hands, and Obix painfully levered himself to four paws and braced his legs to stay upright.

"You're near the town of Ceann Dryss, Obix. Where are you from? You look like you've been running forever." Atano clipped the canteen back onto her belt.

Obix slowly massaged his raptorine muzzle, trying to convince his young body to function. "The Forest Water clan, near the town of Gizitts. I've never heard of Ceann Dryss."

"Gizitts is a hundred or more miles north-north-east of here." Atano looked impressed. Obix, on the other claw, flinched, "I've been running for hours, but I didn't expect to be this far from home."

Atano shrugged, then gestured southeast. "Ceann Dryss isn't far. We'll go slowly, but staying out here is a bad idea. Many predators roam thi region, and young Shrarrs do not know us from food." She smiled briefly and began walking; the adolescent Asaque followed awkwardly, limping with each step as strained muscles screamed in painful protest.

  • ... -- Korat, 21:05:54 01/07/04 Wed
Sesha threw back her noble, sculpted muzzle and keened.

It was a horrible sound, a sound usually reserved for death and hatred and pain. It was an ear-splitting, bone-cracking, soul-shredding sound. It told other Korats to leave the keening one alone -- to flee any possible wrath -- to just flee.

She keened as long as her breath would last, and when the sound finally shakily died away, she rose calmly from her seated position, took one look to her right, and swung her wickedly curved tailblade hard enough to topple a foot-thick tree. The loud rustling of the leaves and the thud as the trunk slammed into the rich earth was satisfying, but only a little. This Korat wanted some violence, and blood, and pain.

She wanted to kill, to suffer, and to die. But most of all, she wanted blood.

  • ... -- nothingness, 22:57:20 12/28/03 Sun
    She cried.

Shamelessly, quietly, tears slowly forming glittering diamonds on her eyelashes before slipping down her cheeks. She sat cross-legged, hung her head, and let the tears drip onto her arms, hands in her lap.

There was no pain inside her... no despair, no angst, no cause for the tears. But as a wise man once said... If there is no cause for your tears, then why are you crying?

She was glad that she didn't have to touch the pain to express it. She knew why she cried, and she had thought she'd avoided the downfall. But they were apart again, and her only comfort was a staunch red flank at her back, a powerful tail around her waist, and a golden tailblade pressed flat against her hip.

She talked blindly, running on automatic as silent tears made their way downwards, smiling and laughing all in her head, in some part of her mind that felt no emotion. The one with whom she spoke had no clue, and she was painfully reminded of the differences between this one and el'lai. This one was not perceptive. This one could not hear the tears behind the laughter.

There was nothing to be done, and no great wave of emotion to be sobbed out. One by one, tears trickled down, tiny raindrops in an empty sea.

  • For Lugh, for the Lady, for YULE! -- me, 21:35:08 12/22/03 Mon
It was that feeling again, that expansive joy, that sensation of her heart exploding out of her chest and dancing gleefully. A feeling like that brought tears to her eyes, and she smiled beatifically into the mingled warmth and cold of bonfire and winter wind.

The fire fed on nothing but spirit, flickering in a stone-rimmed ring around her as she stood, spine straight and shoulders proudly squared. She was dressed in silk and silver, iridescent waves of simply-cut cloth dousing her well-built frame as a peasant's sleeveless dress, and she laughed for sheer joy as the blue flames billowed around her with the currents of the chill wind.

The darkness beyond the fire was supreme, but as she looked up, she could see the moon, a slender crescent of light and beauty immersed in a field of diamonds. The faint, pale light filtered down like spider threads to coalesce into a pool of luminance at the girl's bare feet, untouched by the fire's wild sapphire glow. She smiled and opened her arms to the world around her, feeling the sheer life inherent in everything.

The wind coiled about her, a serpent's cool comfort, and laid a companionable pressure across her bare shoulders. The flames danced, convoluting and undulating like freedom and souls, and the blue light played across her skin like the reflection of sunlight on the ocean immersed in shadow. The pool of astral luminance at her feet grew and splashed against her shins and the hem of her silken dress, soft and sweet like the morning dew and the dawn's first light. The darkness around the fire dipped and weaved like trees and leaves dancing merrily in a good, stiff wind.

"Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna..."

The chant began quietly, slowly, as the girl tilted her face to the moon and closed her eyes. As she began repeating it, two times to a loop, her voice became louder, faster, sharper until she was shouting her goddesses' names to the sky in a dizzying rush of power. Feeling the very air around her breathe in great gasps of life, she leaned back minutely, the fire rushing up in a bout of heat and blued strength to support her.

The darkness was no longer absolute beyond the fire's reach, a strange sort of golden light suffusing the greying shadows. The girl looked to the east with an eager expression, hardly daring to breathe for fear of spilling the gathered power. As the first tentative rays of sunlight reached out to impale drifting wisps of clouds, tiny, nearly inaudible notes of music sallied forth along the tracks of paler sky, falling to be heard like raindrops from pregnant stormclouds. The girl looked up blissfully as the Sun began to rise, and as the sky continued to lighten, the music swelled in tempo and volume until it consumed her.

She raised her hands above her head, feeling the power that she had raised wrap around her body more closely and more tangibly than her loose dress, and locked her eyes on the reborn Sun. "Welcome," she said simply, joyful tears glimmering along her eyelashes as she bowed deeply from the waist. Then, she released the life that she held in her hands, letting the surreal glow from moonlight and fire spiral upwards into the sky; the transparent luminance mingled with the golden sunlight and became as one.

The girl smiled as she dropped her hands to her sides, the sapphire flames dwindling and slowly flickering into nothingness. The Sun had returned, and her soul was warm with His light.

  • Y kum'r tmuuu... -- Akartis, 12:16:02 11/11/03 Tue
    I don't feel right.

Those words echoed in his head as the lanky male paced through dense, gloomy woods. Restless, almost nervous energy lanced through his emanciated frame, sending erratic ripples through thin, patchy fur. Nicked claws clicked against the occasional rock and plunged slightly into the rich, moist soil of his home, and an unpolished tailblade was carried as low as possible behind him without its razor-sharp edge touching the grassless earth.

Akartis didn't understand, and he cursed himself for it. His mate had never truly been the same as he... she held more anger, had a sharper temper, was braver and stronger... but for a while, he had thought that they were practically twins. The dregs of this lingering belief continued to cloud his vision, and he shook his narrow muzzle sharply as though to rid himself of past untruths. Ayrist was a creature whole unto herself; she needed no one to survive, and she needed no help from even him. It was the fact that she wanted to need him that mattered, and that she graciously accepted his pitiful attempts at advice when he tentatively offered them.

My eyes would be lying. And eyes are the keys to the soul.

Those burning violet orbs could not lie, he thought, only show the truth. Or maybe he couldn't see the forest for the trees, as he stalked through the dank jungle, and was missing something important. It would be like him, supposedly so perceptive and aware, to do such.

Was he a fool to be so concerned when, all the times before, his beloved mate had pulled herself up alone and went on? Was she crazy to be so independent, or were his senses failing him in that vital way... Not many things, of all he'd said and done in the past, had really taken effect in his mate's beautiful mind. Those that had could've been learned on her own, sooner or later, and Akartis knew his advice was superfluous at best, unwelcome at worst. Ayrist was a mature soul; she knew what she was doing, who she was, and what life was like. Even if she didn't like it.

Akartis sighed as he came to a small stream, the water nearly black due to shadows and grime, but he drank from it anyways. It was shockingly pure in taste, crisp and cold like liquid diamonds.

I am as I am... though it never seems enough.

Akartis settled to his haunches, hips and shoulders protruding bonily from his lean frame, hide stretching and revealing more scars marking his dust-cream pelt. Did she really know that he loved her for who she was, and not who she could be? He so often emphasized change, transformation, becoming better towards perfection... did she know that these ideals were applied only to himself? Did Ayrist know that Akartis loved her without regret, hesitation, or doubts?

Had he ever really told her that?

So much left to the imagination. He enjoyed playing mind-games like that, but he rarely did with his mate. She was too precious, too sacrosanct, too beautiful. That silence that he often let settle between them -- it was supposed to be comfortable, friendly... yet now he knew her thoughts were far from happiness that night. She hadn't said a word to him. Why?

Just because he trusted her with everything, told her everything, wanted to share everything with her... didn't mean that she would, or even should, reciprocate. He no longer wished she would; it was a limit, drawn in the air invisibly, that separated the best from perfection. He was the luckiest Korat alive as it was -- no reason to push it. And her anger was terrible, though rarely directed at him. He had no temper, no urge to real violence; but she did. He never wanted to trigger that, but at the same time, he refused to step lightly around her. He had always relaxed and said and done as he wished, and it had worked.

Or had it? Was he blind? There were secrets beating beneath that glossy ebon pelt that he didn't know existed, and it would be ridiculous to expect her to share them. Akartis was strange in his openness; it would likely get him killed someday, but he would live as he pleased until then.

The tan sighed, staring at his murky reflection in the shallow stream. Just a Korat... hardly attractive... with a unique mind and the most incredible mate. He had always said that only one soul in the universe understood him... but now, he was beginning to wonder if he understood even she who knew him best.

  • =^_^= -- the many me's, 22:07:25 10/03/03 Fri
'I feel so generic,' Andi muttered as she stood on the plains of Eliode, and turned before her ears even caught the sound of grass parting before a Cadorian. Karusal looked unsurprised to see her alter-ego and offered a mild smile along with a sharp-nailed hand. The young human clasped it warmly, grinning with more enthusiasm than she should. 'I need to talk to you, Karusal-... aw crap... -chan doesn't exist in this language. Blast.'

The water-skinned kat'ni chuckled under her breath, releasing the teen's hand and dropping her own to her side. 'I'm sure you'll adjust for what Cadora lacks on your own time. What do you need to know?' Andi grinned again, flicking an earthy curl from her eyes and gesturing vaguely around her. 'Kar-chan, you basically know all about Cadora. Right?' The other woman nodded. 'Cool. Tell me about the other three races and where they live.'

Scarlet brows shot up in surprise, and the tall kat'ni blinked. 'Why do you want to know about them?' The human renewed her grin but said nothing, and after a moment Karusal spoke. 'There are four continents on Cadora that are separated by vast stretches of water. Only the largest has all seven races on or near it. But the third continent, of a size between Khetten and Erodak, has the three other races, plus humans. Humans tend to live everywhere, as you well know.' Andi nodded and shoved her hands in the pockets of her jeans, expression one of avid attention.

'This continent is called Ironius, and it is shaped much like a giant squid or spider. Only a Khetten-sized center section is unriddled by rivers, marshes, and deltas that eventually lead to the sea, and because of this fringe of outer waterways, Ironius has few decent seaports. The center of the continent is roughly near the equator, so the whole of the area is either tropical or temperate; there are some deserts and barren expanses of rock and mountain in the central portion, but not many. Mostly it's jungle and, farther north or south, deciduous forests. Due to humans not actually holding a vast majority in population, there aren't as many large cities or manufacturing centers as are on Erodak, but there aren't many uncivilized places, so to speak.'

'The first race you know quite well: Teaquins you call them now. They're often called cats, quite simply, and in Cadorian writings you should write them as tiquins. Like humans, they are not all warriors, and their technology is roughly on-par with that of humans as well. You know enough about them that I need not say more.'

'The second race are your Lizardmen, or whatever you've taken to calling them in the privacy of your own mind. They, unlike K'anta, cannot shift to any other form, and are more reptile than dinosaur. We know of them as lizardfolk, and there are no sub-races like merfolk have. If it appeases you any, they call the others catfolk, manfolk, and demonfolk. It is a preference in language, not the actual lack of a self-name, that leads them to call themselves lizardfolk. I believe 'tiquin', in the cats' tongue, means something like catfolk anyways. You know enough about lizardfolk physicalities that I need say nothing more there. However, mentality is new to you.'

'Lizards are indeed nocturnal and, while they can stand brightness, direct sunlight burns their skin if they're exposed for more than a few minutes. They live in the marshes and jungles, preferring to be near lots of water, and they can swim as well as many merfolk: better than almost all kat'ni, with or without our watergear. They cannot stand to stay in saltwater, however. They are a bit more primitive and warrior-like in their thoughts than the other races, lacking technology other than weaponry, and only wear the briefest of clothing to afford them modesty in other races' eyes. For all that they are less intelligent on average than the rest of us, they are very strong-hearted and -willed; their connection to nature is unbreakable and unwavering, lending them more strength than any but the most powerful nature demon can boast of. They live in clans and have warrior-like value systems as well as a powerful code of honor, but unsurprisingly to you and you alone, they do not like violence and are very reluctant to hurt others. Consider them pagans with the appropriate pacifism; they will only fight when necessary.'

'The third race is the one little-known to even me. They are called tuits, and you are correct in what you do know; they are shorter than the other races, averaging 4-5 feet in height, and very stocky and heavy. They, as you thought, have a thick coat of fur over a somewhat dwarven physique, and their hands are large and powerful, but not clawed. They have reasonably short tails, only a few feet long, and tipped in a slender stinger that is indeed poisoned; however, these tails are not very strong nor fast, but they are prehensile. Their feet are human-like, larger than one might think and heavily callused, as they wear no shoes. Their heads are hard to describe, slightly bear-like but very much mellowed towards the human side of things, with bull-like horns replacing ears. They are deaf and communicate solely by body language, and thus are regarded as either psychics or empaths for their acuity in reading other beings' thoughts and emotions. Many tuits know and use telepathy fluently. Their purpose is unknown, for though they can survive low temperatures, they do not like them and prefer a moderate climate, preferably in middling altitude with evergreen forests. Yes, they do mine, but not exclusively so. They are strange and reclusive creatures, living in a small minority on Ironius.'

Andi nodded slowly, absorbing this information with a permanent grin. 'Do tuits live in greater numbers on the fourth continent or are they just small in population everywhere?' she asked quizzically, tilting her head. Karusal smiled briefly, 'They are still a minority, but not so much on the fourth continent -Tsok- as on Ironius.' The human bobbed her head again in understanding. 'Thank you Karusal. I think that's all I need to know. I can figure the rest out on my own.' The red-head nodded and turned to continue welcoming newcomers to Cadora as the human's broad-shouldered frame shimmered and vanished in the cool evening breeze.

  • ... -- ..., 18:39:29 08/25/03 Mon
Can a creature of the night actually have a shadow? Could there be a darker part to a black beast?

...or is it all just... lunacy.

She writhed helplessly, this unnamed and unknown black, caught within conflicting emotions that overwhelmed her body and tore her mind into shreds. A heavy bladeless tail beat against the earth, an erratic tattoo that denied the ksani's inherent rhythm, while pale grey longclaws scraped across rich, fertile soil. Darkness was all around, consuming, hiding, cradling, embracing, strangling, slaughtering, helping, hurting, loving, hating...

Words ringing in her head, the black twisted, staggering upright only to fall to the black earth again. Eyes that were once such a pure violet turned murky and shadowed, squeezed shut to the point of bursting. The final notes of a distant guitar faded away into the roaring silence of her own mind, and the femme again regained her paws only to topple once more. Was there any use? She was drowning in the deep water, water that was nothing more than air, blinded by the darkness' piercing rays...

Does a shadow have a shadow?

    So how do they part?

The black cried out, uncaring of what trouble she might attract with such a weak, helpless sound. Knowing that time was slipping from her grasp and flowing raggedly down its bed despite all her pleas and curses. Every second ticked away and formed minutes with its fellows, which then glomped into hours... There was no time. No time at all for this pain, this suffering, this remembering. The shadow had to be lost, knew the shadow herself, and what to do?

Give it your eyes, so it may see its own darkness...

The black cried out again, a strangled sound that fell upon ringing, deafened ears.

Give it your ears, so it may hear the silence...

Your nose, to smell its death...

Your skin, to feel the chill winds...

Your tongue, to taste its own blood...

Your heart, to feel the pain...

And there was a ripping sound as though lightning had struck, a crackle of pain and a splash of crimson droplets, and suddenly there were two shadows where before there had only been one. The more translucent, ghostly one almost seemed more real... it had senses and could still perceive the world. But as the black staggered to her paws, she felt the pain lift from her heart, and though she could no longer sense the world, she smiled.

The shadow fled. And the black fell once more to the welcoming soil, unable to feel even that impact. But with a smile on her muzzle, she died happy.

    A time portal.

    Back again, old friend?

And she's returned, standing cloaked amidst the downpour, one lone streetlight offering the only luminance other than the lightning in the darkness of night. The wind whips against her, heavy cloak rippling loudly as her hood is thrown back and hair tangled carelessly. Rain pelts her face as she looks upwards, eyes half-lidded, living the storm for one precious moment.

'I never thought I'd be back here again...'

She relives it, every second, every tear, and every pain. A sigh slips past closed lips, a now-trembling hand running long fingers through tangled curls.

Sometimes I remember / the darkness of my past / bringing back these memories / I wish I didn't have

A little laugh... useless against the howling of the dripping wind. Things are better.

    'But I remember...'

Her curse. Shaking her head firmly, she slips the cloak from her shoulders and lets the wind take it away. For a brief second, the freezing rain pelts her body... but then the portal returns.

    'I'm not that girl anymore.'

In the now, the sun is shining brightly.

  • Frustration. -- Ayrist, 21:53:59 08/06/03 Wed
An amethyst gaze watched the ground silently, her bladed tail curvinv forward to touch the soil briefly and dig forth the soft earth. She watched as various insects crawled back into the dirt as she unearthed them, but a careful nose lowered to inspect the roots of the grass. They were gone. Her tail curved back across the tops of the grass, which promptly fell over and died, as if the wheel of time had sudenly sped way beyond control. Her blade lowered, touched the brown and shrivelled grass, and promptly jerked backwards as it turned to ash.

What was this? Reality? Or some kind of horrible dream. Her blade slide once across her forearm, and she knelt to lick the blood before healing the shallow wound herself. Reality. Dyone.

The black female stood, her ears falling back against her skull as she tried to pick up the faintest trace of someone.. anyone... anything for that matter. Though the scent of her mate at this point would have provided her with something akin to calm, and yet worry. Ayrist's eyes fell to a half-lidded position, and she settled herself in a defensive crouch... her ears perked and ready, but her mind on the wander.

Akartis, was hurt, and he was changing. It wasn't so much physical hurt, but the other things. The glances Ayrist caught him giving around himself, or worse then that.. this simply depthless look to his once bright eyes, now dulled... now pained. She didn't know all of the demons that he fought, and half the time.. she simply tried to take his mind off of them. She'd laugh, she'd joke, she'd cuddle. She did the mately things.. but it was only rare occasions that she dared ask him about them. She feared hurting him. She loved him too much for that.

Ayrist paused, sighing. She wished... she wished she could be with him all the time. But cubs, and dealing with other Korats drew her away.. though she knew her mate was not a social beast. And then, when she was with him.. battles. More battles. Constant battles that he fought with himself and with the world. She coudn't help him fight these... only offer her support. And that perhaps riled her nearly as much as that which she feared the most. She feared he didn't know how much she loved him.

She did love him. She thought of him all the time. When they were apart she wouldn't sleep at night, and teras would well up for no reason... though often she flicked them away as she wanted no sympathy from those who could never understand her emotions. And why didn't she tell him? Again, she was too afraid to harm him. Too afraid of bringing pain down upon the one who looked to her for support, and guidance, and love... She was a coward in some respects. A coward when it came to causing a being that she loved to hurt.

She was a warrior. She had found her path. She had a goal in life and she was headed there... because of Akartis... But her lifemate, her soul, her other half... who was connected to her in spirit, body, and mind... he was struggling. And for once the pain of that seemingly always constant distance was hitting her again and again and she couldn't do a dyone thing about it. She'd give up her life, her loves, her dreams, her aspirations... but that wasn't what he would want her to do. He'd want her to go on... and keep heading towards her dreams... but dyone, there was no way she was leaving him.

    No way in btsa.

But by the sun! Could someone give her a clue? Where did she start? How did she help? Every wording, every offer, every attempt seemed to fail. She was useless despite her talent and skill. Useless, despite her compassion and quick mind. Useless, because of distance. And useless, because despite being nearly as close and connected to her mate as she was to herself... they were different. She couldn't control his mind and say, "DYONE IT! BE HAPPY!" She couldn't give him reason to be happy either. What would she give to jump inside her mate's head and slaughter the shadows and demon's that lurked there.. jump back out and see him the way he was before btsa took over, and 'Kartis who'd been truly happy was beaten and hidden?

    Dyone. Dyone. Dyone. Dyone.

Black ears flattened as a portal was formed suddenly beside her. Redan's lengthy muzzle jutted through the ovaline mass... growling once and returning to Lavana. Ayrist eyed the portal quietly... eyed the unknown world around her... and after a brief moment. Realized that she hadn't the faintest clue as to which was the appropriate way to go.

    "DYONE!"

  • ... -- me, 18:00:21 07/29/03 Tue
There was something distinctly wrong with her.

Numi sat beneath the ksani tree in silence, heavy tail curled tightly around her toned limbs, glossy black merging into one still shadow. The massive golden leaves provided shade for her, the fifty-foot-wide trunk deeply fissured, spherical silver fruits giving off a delicate fragrance that bespoke nourishment. The hot wind rushed through the branches high and low, creating an almost fabric-like rippling sound as each leaf was caressed. The pale blue beadgrass waved brightly, tiny flowers interspersed with the strands bobbing their heads with the beat. The music flowed from the tree, and Numi could not keep with it.

It worried her. No breathing Lavanian could fail to live the bass rhythm of the ksani when in perceiving distance. It throbbed with their heart, regulated their breath, raced through their veins and vibrated under their eyelids. Numi had rarely before ever altered from the beat, but now it was a difficult task to keep with it.

Periwinkle eyes closed, the only patch of grass in a field of shadow suddenly gone, but the pearly shells were present... claws unsheathed and dug into the rich soil, blade pressing hard against her smooth-furred shoulder. The black shivered, tension sending tiny shockwaves through her graceful form. The music was loud, too loud, too distant... strange and alien. When had Numi ever felt unnatural in such a beautiful place? She well knows her own beauty, her own worth. What had changed it suddenly? Is this transient, just a fleeting dose of oddity?

    Is it permanent?

Excesses. Faults. Mistakes. Why did they suddenly loom so large, staring her straight in the face and making her stomach churn? Numi felt herself begin to lose touch, like that first time she had ever shut out all senses but one and changed her entire perception of the world. Any footing shifted, and it almost seemed physical, balance thrown askew as pearly claws dug deeper into the moist black soil, paws trembling. Breathing seemed to change, painfully alter from the music-given rhythm, and suddenly oxygen was no longer adequate. Finding herself gasping for air, Numi's pale eyes flew open, pupils dilated in slowly growing panic.

    What's wrong with me!?

Transient. Everything is transient... nothing stays. Changes and a feeble memory... the entire world is in a constant state of flux for the young black, but she'd gotten used to this. So why is the total lack of stability scaring her now?

Pain slowly impinged on her thoughts, a stiff burning in her paws as she realized she'd nearly dislocated her own claws by trying to hold onto the still earth. The wind had quieted, the music had twisted, and she was still alone... unmoving. The world slowly stopped trying to tear her apart and fling her into the sky, and her breathing steadied. Shivering still plagued her muscles, moving from clenched digits up to toned limbs. Trying to focus on something, anything, a pale gaze dropped and with some ease, Numi studied a ruby-red flower at her paws, blocking everything else out. The fact that she could totally block the ksani out was disconcerting, but she tossed the unnerved feeling aside and simply stared.

Perfection in such a tiny plant. Bugs had chipped the teardrop-shaped petals and the clover-like leaves, but all in due time. Beauty is perfection, and beauty is not perfect. The veins, barely differing shades of blue-green, ran up the stem and into the leaves, making a delicate network of striping throughout the whole plant. The petals were blood-red, velvet to the touch although she did not touch, soft and gentle. Miniscule petals bloomed from the center, where pollen should be and wasn't, making a slowly-exploding ball of red that grew in a day and then died, leaving its spirit to fertilize the earth and reincarnate.

What was she thinking? Phoenix-believer she was... crazy she was not.

    Or was she?

Numi shook her head, slowly coming back to all five senses and feeling none the better. Mind supremely focused on the music within and without, she could barely follow it... walking the fine edge of balance, a ridge from which a fall would be disastrous... She shook her head again, a jerky motion. Maybe she really was insane. Did non-striped Korats ever lose it, she wondered? Was there any way to shake this feeling of surreality and being alien? She'd never lost touch this badly with the music before... and music was a Lavanian's life. Its blood and heart and rhythm, its very soul. Lose it and you die. No either-or.

    "I've felt it too."

The voice is light but dark, an airy shadow formed into sound, with a sharp edge and a deep sadness weakening its power. Numi's sleek muzzle slowly turned, unaware of who could've slipped up so quietly on her, she who had honed senses to a razor keenness, she who had... but ah. Of course.

Akartis bowed his head as he settled next to the black, bony gauntness almost frightening in its frailty. Scars traced his dust-cream pelt, nicked his silver blade and black claws, and made the lanky male seem older than his years. After all, the two were about the same age, Akartis perhaps a year older at most. Pale violet-grey eyes looked into beadgrass-blue ones with soft, sad understanding, and Numi in turn bowed her own head. Kindred spirits were rare. But... wait. Eyes flickered upwards, locking on the thin male. "Felt...?" she mumbled, beautiful face warped in confusion. The tan nodded, taking up her curled position himself, longer tail looping almost twice about his lean haunches. "Felt the pain of distance... the feel of being an alien in my own home."

Numi frowned, a half-hearted twitch of her muzzle. "You're a Terolian... or were." A shrug of bony shoulders, "I was born here and I live here now. What difference does it make?" The black sighed, hunching her shoulders and trying to disappear within her shadowy self. Akartis could offer no comfort, having the strength within himself to survive... but nothing more. A harsh mistress, Terole, but harsher her sister, Lavana. Akartis was constantly surprised at how he managed to cheat death every day. Numi... No telepathy; thoughts only. No link between the two... there never was... probably never would be. Strangers of the same heart.

    Let me ease your pain.

Oh, for someone to say that. Numi's muzzle angled upwards, pale eyes locking onto the massive tree under which she still sits, quivering. The utter solidity was reassuring, but as she remembered the music, she realized her body has not conformed to what everyone else hears. Never one for the mass beliefs, Numi, but this lack of a soul-song scared her. Cocking an ear and concentrating, she realized Akartis' skinny frame hadn't responded to the pervasive beat either.

Where is my brother? Where is my father?

    Why don't I have a mother? Or a sister?

Eyes half-lidded and glazed over, Numi falling still and breathing silencing. Akartis knew it was easier to just not breathe sometimes, to let your body work until it really needed to inhale... the expansion of lungs and diaphragm difficult and tedious, too much work to do often. If the heart were a voluntary muscle, Akartis knew he would surely die. But he felt so tired, unable to feel the hectic panic in which the black was immersed, the hazy, prickly energy that enveloped her and gave her the energy to cling to the earth and dive within herself. His own gaunt frame was nigh-lifeless, a dust-furred puppet of his own faltering will. A slender silver tailblade hit the grass with what seemed a bone-shattering thud, nonexistent shockwaves tearing through the earth and rattling his teeth.

Numi didn't move at the soft sound of blade against grass, vision hazing over as she neglected to blink or breathe.

A sudden palpitation within both Korats' hearts brought them from the brink of collapsing, one way or the other. Pale gazes met, startled.

    ...why don't I have a sister?
    I am your sister...
    ...why don't I have a mother?
    I am your mother...

    Your brother is here...
    Your father is here...

Numi jerked, a minor twitch sending ripples down her glossy pelt. Her head bent, chin lowering to rest against her deep chest, and for a moment she simply breathed. The music was no long wild and alien, but a steady heartbeat that felt natural again. She felt calm spreading through her veins as her body adjusted itself with absolute accuracy to the earthy music that permeated every inch of her being.

Akartis felt strength rising from the music as his body also adjusted to it, heart and lungs altering. The process of inhaling and exhaling was no longer so arduous. Gentle power, his by right of birth and creed, flowed with his blood and spread to his extremities. His lean frame no longer appeared so frail, and the weakness was gone from his eyes... but the darkness remained. It would always remain.

Pale gazes met, simple understanding in both. With only a simultaneous nod, the two Korats rose and began walking in opposite directions. It only took a few moments for both to disappear.

  • ... -- me, 21:49:14 07/25/03 Fri
"So... tired..." Andi sighed heavily, materializing a Sachi-style utility belt around her waist and digging one of her silver discs out of a pouch, tying a long string around it and holding the other end in her left hand. "Gotta get out of this place," she muttered, flinging the disc frisbee-style and letting it teleport her with it -- a risky maneuver but one she didn't really mind taking at this point. After immersion in blackness, a strange sort of senseless between, the young woman skidded on creamy waves of long grass and reeled her disc back in, tucking it into its pouch and stuffing the string in with it. "Kalen. My world. My home." With a sigh, a greyblue gaze watched the dawn's greyer section of the sky that matched her eyes so well, and a simple visualization changed her clothing from jeans and a T-shirt to baggy trousers, a loose tunic, and a heavy, hooded cloak. Enfolding herself in the cloak, she donned the hood and a plain-featured face became mere shadow.

Familiar music drifted into the realm of hearing and she smiled in the darkness, the first sign of a brilliantly golden disc peeking over the horizon. The few wisps of clouds in the east were tinted ruddy orange by the rising sun now, and a vanilla-scented wind eddied around the cloaked figure, its origin several small white roses with exotic golden leaves. "I wonder if I should've gone to Tharaoh's mountain ledge," she mused quietly, breathing deeply of the serenity that is Kalen's right by creation. Almost as though naming was summoning, a dark figure shimmered into existence nearby, quickly taking on familiar features as the teleportation haze dissipated.

"Hi Tharaoh," Andi murmured, grinning slightly. The Cat usually wasn't a willing muse, but she hoped to hear his words clearly for once. But he didn't speak, only watched her with vivid teal eyes much like those of a certain Korat. Fine-featured and considered beautiful by many, Tharaoh was shorter than the mostly-human girl, his curly black hair thick and unbound to his hips. His cloak was tossed over his shoulders, baring black trousers and a tunic of the same hue, and with his mocha skin, he looked like a shadow. Except for those eyes. Andi sighed lightly, seating herself cross-legged in the tall grass and slipping one hand out of her cloak to dig her fingers into the rich soil. It was dew-damp still and cool to the touch.

"What are you doing here?" At the low voice, she looked up again, a half-grin twisting her lips. "Waiting," was her reply. The slender Cat padded forward, silent except for the rustling of cream grass in his wake, and sat opposite the human. Andi repressed a flinch, having rarely seen Tharaoh close-up for more than a few seconds, and that usually when sparring with the moody Shifter. There was a dark beauty haunting his face, and she cast her gaze downwards. What to say to a Cat who would love nothing better than to kill one of her favorite alter-egos? "Did I call you?" she finally asked, glancing up again. Tharaoh shook his head, curls tumbling around his face.

Andi looked down, studying the grass and the dirt, studying her own fingers as they flexed and played with the rich soil. "You've never been to Kalen before, have you?" she asked suddenly, eyes traveling upwards once more. Tharaoh again shook his head, "None of us have. You never let us before. It was always yours and yours alone." A pause. "Why have you let us here now?" The girl smiled, though her face was still shadowed by the hood. "Because you're all a part of me. Kalen is for me... and thus for you. It's my place. My heart." Tharaoh snorted, finally acting his persona, but didn't say anything beyond that. Andi sighed lightly, "If I asked T'yin to come... you would leave, wouldn't you?" The Cat shrugged slender shoulders, uncaring. Andi's eyes narrowed, "Why are you so odd around him?" A bright teal gaze returned her own and she flinched slightly. Even when not scowling, Tharaoh had an intimidating, dangerous look to him. Not the most open of her kalahn, certainly.

With a gusty sigh, Andi fell backwards, cushioned by the long grass. "Gods, Tharaoh. I feel like talking, and saying important things, but I... don't have anything to say. I have no purpose right now other than to wait, and..." The low voice interrupted, "I know. But you know she has it worse than you, so you wait despite it all. You're a good person. Just never forget..." Andi laughed a little at that, staring up at the lightening sky, "How could I forget, Tharaoh? My mind plagues me, as odd as that sounds. Will I ever conquer it?" A rustle of fabric betrayed Tharaoh's shrug. "I don't know. I've not yet conquered my own mind... that's one of the qualities we share, as much as I hate to admit it. You... as an Earthling... I can stand." Andi took the opportunity to ask, "Why do you hate Sachi the Wolf?"

Tharaoh chuckled, a disconcerting sound. Grass rustled and Andi felt him lay down, still opposite her and probably staring at the sky as well. "Because she's you. You figure that one out on your own." Andi blinked, raising an eyebrow, but put the matter off until later. "It's odd, Tharaoh. I've trained myself to blunt honesty, able to state my feelings with no muffling or twisting, and when I have no feeling to state I feel like I'm... almost... I don't know. I want to say something and then start fixing it, but there's nothing to say and nothing to fix... so I try to find something, and by then I don't know if I'm lying or not. Honesty is hard to tell in the depths of my own mind."

"Honesty I cannot help you with." Another chuckle. "I'm no honest fool. Talk to your brother. Or T'yin. That one seems unable to lie." Silence fell, not even broken by songbirds, and Andi sighed again. "Remind me sometime to make some small animal life for this place. The water isn't close enough for me to hear, and just the wind and my breathing..." Tharaoh, unseen by the human, rolled his eyes. "Then shut up and listen." Slightly amused at getting a rise out of the hot-headed Panther, Andi did as asked and found her breathing slowing and deepening, the sound of the wind the only thing that existed. She closed her eyes, forsaking all of her senses to live on the wind and air, giving her soul wings to fly. Troubled thoughts brought her back down, and she sighed. "I don't think she'll be here tonight, Tharaoh."

"Then so be it. You may live around her, but you cannot live solely for her. Get yourself together. And burn the cards." Andi laughed aloud at that, knowing how much time she'd been wasting playing Solitaire, and she watched Tharaoh rise as she propped herself up onto her elbows. "This music isn't helping," she muttered with a slight grin, the hood falling back from her face. The Cat regarded her for a long moment, silhouetted by the rising sun at his back, and slowly nodded. "Good luck, Andrea Mancuso," he murmured... and vanished. Andi blinked, having never heard him call her anything but Sachi before, even as a human, and half-grinned again. She had nothing more to do but wait... and Solitaire was useful from time to time. If only to blank out all thought.

  • ... -- Korat and Drakka, 21:39:53 05/14/03 Wed
Thelyris ran. His tan paws were only blurs beneath a raging form, dust brown body tainted russet propelling him down do that rock. He leapt in a sharp arc, claws hitting soil and jerking him to a halt behind his defensive boulder, rugged chest heaving as the thunder of bullets from the oncoming Drakka raged overhead. He took this moment to close his eyes a bit, feeling the searing pain in his flesh as wounds stopped their bleeding and sealed themselves, leaving only the odd smell of natural cauterization in their wake. Another deep breath and the tan was off again, but only a few feet to the shadows of a gully. Sliding down in a desperate manner, he heard the angry rasps of the black beasts above him, and pressed his body against the side of the trench; flinging his lengthy limbs out in all directions and unfocusing his eyes. He heard the Drakka, saw them breathing over his vague protection, and mentally sighed his relief as they moved on their way... then one slipped down into his gully and Thelyris twitched; startled. The Drakka gasped in recognition of a living Korat and grabbed for his weapons, taking aim and nearly pulling on the triggers. Thel snarled softly, and then dissapeared to the Drakkan eye... the beast twitching around for a few moments, then catching a flash of tan and trying to fire; only to find a searing pain in all six of his arms, four of which now lay twitching on the ground, the other two hanging on by ligaments. The Drakka screamed; it's agony expressed in harsh clicking noises, only to feel yet another sharp stab of pain as a blade went through it's chest. It convulsed once, still standing, then fell on the ground, gasping for breath in little moans. Thel eyed the beast quietly, and taking one of the arms within his jaws lifted the hand up to the edge of the trench. Guns fired like a storm and when the tan Korat lowered the appendage, all that was left was a bloody stump. The tan spat the foul tasting thing from his jaws and flicked his ears back against his head in annoyment. Amber eyes flicked to the Drakka, but Thel knew the beast would die in time; and thus settled himself up against the side of the hole, curling his tail defensively against his body and leaning into the shadows. But the amber eyes remained open, and the night drew onwards, gunshots and screams overhead and he could do nothing about it. And of course... the Drakka. He kept moaning, clicking, but the clicks were softer now, more of a whimper... NO! This was the enemy! Drakka did not... whimper. Thel eyed the thing again, flattened his ears against the side of his head and looked away... He heard the moaning in his mind now. It was so... Thel grunted, and lifting his blade to his dry tongue, almost cleaning the weapon that way... but the Drakka cried out once again and Thel's blade hit the dirt... the tan desperately turning his head away as he tried to wash his weapon in the muddy watter at the bottom of his ditch, this... this crying things blood... it was not on his tailblade... no... The Drakka sobbed, causing blood to spurt and land, hot on Thelyris's flesh. The Korat fell on the ground at the touch of it, paws clamping over his ears at the whining... light of the sun had come at last... but the Drakka had not found his peace. The tan Korat jerked his head back and forth, pawing at his muzzle and raking blood marks along his face, his tail twitched rabidly behind him. He stood, eyeing the Drakka with a contorted expression of pain. The Korat raised his blade, slowly placing it over the Drakka's neck, who moaned once again and through feverish eyes tried to turn it's face away. Thel's blade raised, held in that suspended moment of time, and it never came down. He fell back on himself, clawing madly at the dirt and slamming his head against the rough surface of the trench's walls... Then, holding his muzzle against the wall, he heard the Drakka moan again, and cautiously worked his way over to it. He placed his paw on it's shoulder, and the Drakka began to cry out wildly, slamming its head against the wall and baring its pinchers at Thel, still trying to fight back. Thel spoke what he could to it... a simple form of Kalash, "I want to help you... Let me help you..." The Drakka didn't understand, but after a few more slammings of its head against the wall, Thel's paw moved to the other side of the Drakka's face... and the black creature, too tired and in pain to do in more, leaned against the tawny fur of the Korat who injured him... and allowed a lone tear to fall from it's burgundy eye.

Thelyris stayed with him until the following morning when the red eyes, no longer such a fearsome picture, grew dim... the tan Korat then headed back his pack.

    The battle was over.

  • Random Bit of... I don't know... -- Zynne, Ewyna, Myk, 22:23:18 04/30/03 Wed
A lanky biped of shadow slumped back against the golden mass behind her, yellow gaze closing as her lupine head fell quietly into the soft. A large tail curved around the slender form, supportive and comforting at the same time. The biped gripped it firmly, hugging the appendage close to her chest, and allowing dry sobs to rip from her body.

    "Ewyna... why..?"
    "I don't know... I just don't know."

A soft snarl and across the darkness a green gaze flicks on as eyes closed in concentration are allowed to open. Tan Tarok steps out from his position against the wall, looking slightly uncomfortable at the scene. Mecharm raises to deftly scratch behind his head before he too settles near the group... darkly dyed rebel mane idly pulled back out of his eyes.

    "You okay then?"
The black biped shrugs, still clinging firmly to the gold and white tail.
"I think so... I just, I know I'm back to the way I want to be... yet why does everything seem so painful?"
Ewyna allows a deep sigh at this, fur rippling over his form just by the mere movement.
"It will get better... keep on to the journey and the goal shall be reached."
Green eyes roll good naturedly as Myk settles back into a preferred crouch, "See there Kitty? You've gotten words from the true prophet!"

  • This never happened and I hope it never will... -- Cadorians, 20:09:28 04/21/03 Mon
Nawuyi, damp auburn curls pressed into the pillow, twisted uneasily in her sleep, her tanned skin moist with sweat. The sapphire silk sheet over her nude form matched all too perfectly the eyes of her lover; Siyirenki had propped himself up on one elbow to watch the young woman. A gust of nightwind blew in, fingering the ice demon's long black hair, and he breathed deeply. She would never know. She couldn't. With a grace and silence second to none, Siyi slid upright and stood, the sheet giving his fair skin one last caress before it fell back onto the bed in a soft rumpled pile. Two sharp pinpoints of green shone forth from the darker parts of the spacious room, and as the ice demon focused, he could make out the black-clothed, lean form of the fire wraith. Siyi held up one long finger, a silent signal to be patient, and quietly slipped on his trousers and was about to grab his shirt when the same gesture from Maharon denied him that garment.

    hold on to me love
you know i can't stay long
all i wanted to say was i love you and i'm not afraid
    can you hear me?
can you feel me in your arms?

Siyirenki's beautiful sapphire eyes looked once more on the sleeping woman, a soft smile tenderly lighting his face. She was so wonderful; the demon had never before expected to feel love for a human, but from the moment Nawuyi freed him, he had loved her. A single tear slipped down the high curve of his cheekbone as the ice apparition turned away again. Maharon was waiting. But a strange reluctance gripped him, and for a moment Siyi thought she had awakened. But no, a quiet sigh from parted lips was all that drew his gaze again. How could he leave the woman who had saved him so many times, kept him alive when he should have died? How could he abandon his destiny like this?

    holding my last breath
    safe inside myself
are all my thoughts of you
sweet raptured light it ends here tonight

The nearly inaudible rustle of dark clothing caught the ice demon's attention; Maharon's slender frame detached itself from the darkness, stepping lightly into the gloom of filtered moonlight. The green-haired demon laid one slim, supportive hand on Siyi's strong shoulder, tightening the grip once before letting his fingers slide off. A second tear raced down the ice demon's pale cheek, joining its brother briefly before plummeting to the plush carpeting. Siyi shivered, unable to move from the spot; his feet had grown roots. He couldn't do it. There was no way he could leave her. It would be like a... a spear through the solar plexus. So close. But it had missed, and she had saved him. Gave him her all whenever he needed it, never asking for anything in return. Maharon faded into the shadows again as the young woman turned, a slight moan audible before her sleepy eyes opened. "Siyi...?"

    i'll miss the winter
    a world of fragile things
look for me in the white forest
hiding in a hollow tree (come find me)
    i know you hear me
i can taste it in your tears

The ice demon turned, looking down at his lover as she sat up, the sheets slithering to pool in her lap. The human wasn't, had never been, easy to fool - her mouth formed a little 'O' as she realized what was going on. "Siyi, please," she whispered plaintively, a quick side-glance betraying her knowledge of Maharon's presence, "please don't." Siyirenki took a step forward, reaching out to caress her cheek. Fresh tears sparkled in his eyes, and with a trembling hand Nawuyi wiped them away. "Siyi, please..."

    closing your eyes to disappear
you pray your dreams will leave you here
but still you wake and know the truth
    no one's there

Tears continued to spill from his eyes as the ice demon stepped backwards and turned to go. Maharon emerged from the shadows and took a few gliding steps to the bedside; he touched the human's shoulder briefly and whispered, "I'll take care of him, Nawuyi. I'll bring him back to you alive if I still breathe." Now weeping silently, soulful hazel eyes watched the ice demon slip out the door, followed by the green-haired wraith. Alone in a suddenly hostile room, the human drew her knees up to her chest and buried her face in her arms, crying without sound.

    say goodnight
    don't be afraid
    calling me
calling me as you fade to black

  • The Flight of Evanescence -- Emotion, 22:45:40 03/13/03 Thu
Six sets of eyes; human and draconic
falling into two beyond the veil.
How can you see into my eyes
    like open doors.

So much more beyond these eyes...
    Look farther.
Leading you down into my core
    where I've become so numb.

    Reality in dual natures,
    swiftly shifting into lust...
    and again,
    more.
    Without a soul
    my spirit's sleeping somewhere cold.

Room spins, looking through the eyes of one.
    He is alone.
Until you find it there and lead it back home.
    The eyes lift.

    "You came?"

    Wake me up.
    Wake up to life.
    Wake me up inside.
    Trust me. Trust me.
    I can't wake up.
    Yes, try harder.
    Wake me up inside.
    I am still here.
    Save me!
    I am trying so hard!
Call my name and save me from the dark.
Don't you know I love you?
    Wake me up.
I sit beside you if you falter once awake.
    Bid my blood to run.
It runs already, wake up to feel it!
    I can't wake up.
    You can! You can!
    Before I come undone.
I am here to hold you together.
    Save me!
    I love you!
Save me from the nothing I've become.
You mean so much to me...

    Now that I know what I'm without;
    you can't just leave me.

    I will never leave you.
Breathe into me and make me real
We kiss. Your breath is my own.
    Bring me to life.
    Are you alive?
If you are nothing, then so am I.
    Yet our nothings become everything.

    Bring me to life.
    I've been living a lie
    There's nothing inside.

    Bring me to life.

    Frozen inside without your touch,
    without your love, darling.

But I am here! Feel me!
Only you are the life among the dead.
And you are my life also.

    All of this sight
    I can't believe I couldn't see

    We are all blind once.
    Kept in the dark
but you were there in front of me

    Let me lead you.

I've been sleeping a 1000 years it seems.
I've got to open my eyes to everything.

And our eyes are opened together.

    Without a thought.
    I am your thought.
    Without a voice.
    I am your voice.
    Without a soul.
Let me join with your soul!

    Don't let me die here
    There must be something wrong.

    The wrong will be conquered.
    Bring me to life.
    We live as one.

If you are nothing, then so am I.
    Yet our nothings become everything.

    Bring me to life.
Our love will make you live.
    I've been living a lie
    There's nothing inside.

    Let me fill your emptiness.

    Bring me to life.
How does it feel to be alive?

  • Solarith -- Nhauvrae, 19:35:24 02/27/03 Thu
Awra brushed her cheek against her brother's ruff in a silent and affectionate greeting, the younger fire's pelt a mottle of red, gold, and orange to contrast to the earth femme's darker chocolate, amber, and rust fur. Two purrs were sounded briefly to express mutual content before the male, called Razzir, nudged his sister's shoulder in a follow-me gesture and slipped into the dark foliage. With some difficulty, the more muscular Awra followed her sibling, careful of his extra-large white tailblade hovering inches from her flat nose.

She had come to visit her newly adult bloodkin when she'd heard that he'd gotten himself a territory of his own. Proud, for most fire elementals didn't like to settle down as earths or waters did, the femme had decided to check it out and make sure he didn't need any help. After all, Nhauvrae as a species are very family-oriented.

Razzir grinned proudly as he showed his big sister, the dearest of all his siblings, around his new lands. A small tract only about ten acres across and fifteen long, nonetheless it was lush with plenty of water, shelter, and prey trails. Brightly he bounded ahead, intent on showing her something of which he was very proud. It was the Crazouli shard that he and Awra had always so admired; their parents had kept it as their most prized possession, and only now had thought to part with it. The fire had leapt at the opportunity to take it and place it in his new home.

Razzir landed lightly from a particularly high bound and with a prideful flourish of his tail, bowed and gestured with one wickedly clawed paw to the shining jewel, set upon a dead stump. Awra shambled after him, humoring her younger brother and also fairly impressed at his land. Until she saw the shard.

Razzir! How did you get that!? It was her first thought as amusement faded from her face and was replaced by shock. But looking upon her brother's eager grin, awaiting what he surely assumed would be excitement for him, Awra couldn't say it. But he had taken what should have been hers, as elder child. He had taken what she had always considered 'her' jewel shard. Betrayed.

The fire grinned blithely, his sharp-tipped horns gleaming in the filtered sunlight. He didn't figure he needed to say anything; his sister had always been bright, especially for an earth, and would understand that their parents had finally given it up. She looked surprised but of course she'd be! Their parents had loved the Crazouli chip. He grinned all the more.

Awra looked from shard to sibling and with an inner hole gaping inside, knew that she couldn't say anything to him. He would understand if she would, but there was still no undoing. There was nothing to be done to fix it, and he had never intended to hurt her. So bolstering her spirit as best she could, the Nhauvra heartily congratulated her brother on his fine lands and the luck he had in landing the jewel. All the while crying inside.

    Betrayed.

  • =o,o= I wanna go die now. -- Korat, Larenyx, 19:11:50 02/08/03 Sat
Atumi loped silently, miles into the depths of Lavana's jungles. The air was stifling and smothered in heat, temperatures upwards of 110F. The black was as moody as the shimmering winds, lips permanently twisted into a snarl and blade on a hair-trigger. Ebon claws dug mercilessly into thick, loamy soil, tossing pawfuls of it as he moved with more force than was graceful. Teal eyes that normally shone only faintly were sending out thick rays of tinted light, pupils consumed in the watery hue. For once, though, the powerful Korat was not listening to the input of his senses, and thus the sudden appearance of a creature in his path was unexpected.

Atumi snarled, cracking his tailblade over his shoulder in a clear gesture - get out of my way or suffer my wrath. The snow-furred beast echoed the vicious sound, lips curling and emphasizing the blood-red slashmarks on its cheekbones, revealing rows of scarlet-tainted teeth. The pure white fur darkened to a pale grey at the end of the tail, where pelt disappeared and was replaced with tough, leathery hide. Lusterless black claws dug into fertile soil, a scarlet crest fluffed and expanded aggressively, and slowly, deliberately, the Larenyx lowered its torso to scream out a challenge.

The Korat male wasted no time in lunging forward, teal light spraying from his eyes as power collected naturally in his lithe form, throwing a watery tinge to his pale grey blade and pitchblack pelt. But a whipcrack near his muzzle slid him to a halt; the creature hadn't moved, but now stood proudly. Atumi fought his way free of the battle rage submersing his mind and understood.

"My name is Atumi Exilic. I am a Koratian warrior and pack second to the mighty red Shula."

"My name is Kilit:tyra jin Renla:shun. I am a Larenyxian warrior and renegade. I wish to die."

The black blinked at such a blatant statement, but focused enough that he recognized the brightness of respect glowing in those amber orbs. She knew full well who he was, and she sought him out to die. Silky ears flattened and he dipped his sleek muzzle in a slow, accepting nod; he needed to kill something, and she needed death. A fair trade. But at least he would give her his respect in turn.

    "Well-met, Kilit:tyra."

    "And you, Atumi:jhrenk."

The unfamiliar title caught the Korat's attention, but in the next moment, the Larenyx moved, and he was immersed in his rage once more. A burning teal aura surrounded Atumi's supple frame as he erupted forwards, blade arcing to strike and give the stranger a swift and honorable death. But when it whipped downwards at a speed to rival a tan's...

    She was gone.

Kilit:tyra did not plan to sell her soul cheaply. Her five-foot frame moving with lightning speed, she dodged the male's strike and rebounded from a nearby tree trunk, landing behind and to Atumi's left before flinging her long tail forward, whipcracking it--

Atumi felt a shattering and sudden ripping pain lay itself in a straight line along his right flank, curling around his chest and the tip digging into his left shoulder with startling force. He turned in time to see the Larenyx retract her tail behind her rump, and was shocked to feel how deeply the bladeless appendage had cut into his muscles. But without faltering, the male began to heal, and, eyes a-glow, let forth a blast of pure energy from his jaws.

Kilit:tyra was stunned by the sight of raw power hurtling towards her and with a powerful leap, dodged it, tucking her tail out of the way as the bolt seared past under her and decimated a twenty-foot-thick tree. Golden eyes widening slightly, she caught herself on a handy branch and, digging her claws into it, paused and slapped the trunk with her tail. Energy flowed into her form, not nearly as much as the Korat had gathered but--

Atumi moved swiftly, sensing the collection of energy building in the Larenyx's bipedal frame. His wound healed, he launched himself full-force and caught Kilit:tyre off-guard, slamming her against the trunk and sinking his teeth into her long, sinuous neck. Without any warning, pain consumed him and he was forced to release her, shoving off and landing raggedly on the ground, panting and trying to shake the paralyzing agony from his trembling form.

The white's serpentine tongue slipped out and she licked the blood that poured from her wounds; they were nasty, but not fatal. The running current of power that she was hooked into had protected her life, and for that she was mildly irate. Releasing her tailtip from the crushed bark, she snarled, slightly woozy from the sudden blood loss. But without much hesitation, she flung herself at the downed Korat, claws extended and jaws gaping--

    Atumi dodged.

Kilit:tyre's whiptail cracked, drawing a fresh and deep line of scarlet across an ebony chest.

And Atumi's tailblade severed the tip of her tail.

The Larenyx sucked in a quick breath, more from shock than actual pain. She'd lost the last foot of her fifteen-foot tail, the most dangerous part. A slow-motion scream erupted from her throat and the white threw herself forward, thumbclaws slashing for the Korat's face and tail swinging around for another assault.

Atumi grinned, and accepted the lunge with a pretense of falling back in panicked haste. As he ducked her foreclaws and felt her tail slice into his haunch, the black's neck unlocked with a muscle spasm and his muzzle rocketed forward, clamping onto the Larenyx's upper forearm. His eyes increased their luminosity as energy surged from his jaws, ripping through the white's body and returning the pain of electrocution that he had just experienced. But he did not let go, and continued pouring energy into her thrashing form.

Kilit:tyre let out a primordial scream from the depths of her being as agony consumed her. Her tail whipped uncontrollably against Atumi's left flank and haunch, her foreclaws groped blindly in the air, and it was all she could do to stay upright and not collapse from the inconceivable pain. Another scream, and another, but the energy that she had gathered sustained her life for the precious few moments that she needed. Swiveling her long snout, she ripped a thin furrow across Atumi's neck, then snaked her muzzle down to, in turn, sink her fangs into the Korat's foreleg. And she pushed the tree-energy that remained in her quivering body through her jaws and into his form.

It was Atumi's turn to nearly howl his pain, despite his grip on flesh. His entire left flank, haunch, and shoulder was tattered into stringy, bloody rags by the incessant tail-whipping, but the flood of energy multiplied the pain by a hundredfold. And then, a strange feeling of molasses consumed him, dulling his senses and electrifying his wounds, weakening his grip on the white's limb--

Kilit:tyre knew the poison had begun to work when she felt the ruthless jaws of the black lessen the pressure on her forearm. But energy still surged from Korat to Larenyx, and until it stopped, she was helpless to do more--

POISON! Atumi's mind enflamed at such tactics, and with a muffled roar his tail swung forward and plunged the blade between the biped's shoulders; at the same time, a final wave of blinding energy was sent through his jaws. Then, feeling his limbs begin to crumple with his own dead weight, a powerful strike with the flat of his blade knocked the Larenyx away from him. He fell--

Kilit:tyre hit the ground hard and, to her own surprise, could not rise. The energy had crippled her, and the wound so recently received had barely missed her heart and lungs, barely missed her spine. But the poison could not have ruined the Korat's aim that much...

The teal haze surrounding his form flickered out and vanished as Atumi's muzzle smacked against the fertile soil. Unable to resist the pain and paralyzation, he surrendered to it, and his eyes closed unwillingly on the sight of the gore-covered white...

Kilit:tyre shivered convulsively, but found herself unable to even heal. Exhausted and badly wounded, the Larenyx tried to return Atumi's steady gaze, but blackness enveloped her before it took him as well...

Deep within the jungles of Lavana, a Korat and a Larenyx, mortal enemies by race, lay crumpled in mutilated balls of flesh, blood pouring from their wounds and minds wandering the darkness of unconsciousness. Their healing systems unable to work, due to energy-exhaustion, both of them would surely die within ten minutes, unknowing of their opponent's similar demise...

But an immense wave of pain and power gripped each body simultaneously, forcing their bodies to health and restoring enough life-force to let them survive. Twin snap-shot healings.

    And they slept on.

  • Boredom... -- Tarok, Olashi, 15:49:50 02/08/03 Sat
A lithe black shadow lunged forward, twin longclaws sinking into a squat Drakkan neck and killing the beast soundlessly. Said claws were wiped against the Drakka's leathery hide to clean them, and the black raced forward again, gold eyes the only indication of solidity. As two Drakka were encountered, chatting casually, a silver blade whipped as the longclaws struck again - two ugly heads fell from muscular shoulders and the bodies collapsed. And the shadow ran on. A sharp corner was rounded and a barrage of bullets did not take the wraith by surprise; a powerful leap dodged the fire and descended upon the soldier's head, a different pair of longclaws cracking the Drakka's skull open and slamming it into the iron floor. The two gold eyes narrowed slightly and the shadow darted to one side as more gunfire erupted from a hidden position near some large crates. Some of the sharp, serrated 'bullets' came close to shredding ebony pelt, and finally, the shadow was forced to use the gunband; rapid lasershot quickly and quietly slaughtered the hidden shooter. A sodden thud announced the fall of the mutilated body, and a grin bared pearly white fangs as the shadow waited.

The dark warehouse-type setting vanished, and Januya grinned as she slipped the holosim ring off her finger and exited the box-like training 'room'. Those Olashi Simnohses who had watched her 'sim looked approving as the Tarok idly stretched her muscles. "Trying to make me use my 'band, huh?" she remarked, grinning and adjusting the fit of the metallic circlet about her brow which had a small lasercannon pressed against each temple. Her partner, equally insolent, lounged in a chair nearby, laughing aloud at the ease of Jan's defeat of the holosim. He had done equally well, though utilizing in full his single DB. The pair, after all, were elites.

A violet-tinted Olashi, the pair's official Simnohs, raised her hand to silence the sound of mirth. Januya straightened, lending her attention, as did Kahni. "I have a mission for you both, since you've passed this test so easily. Another Olashi-Tarok pair, the best trackers we have, has nearly found the Drakkan home world. Help them find it, and when you do, infiltrate it and bring us back reports." Jan's eyes widened and Kahni shot up from his chair, hands balled into fists. "Are you NUTS!?" he yelled, losing all respect for such an asinine request. The Simnohs glowered, "Do it... or I revoke your rank as elites."
