Subject: An ex pentecostal view of the Holy Spirit

Greetings in Christ from sunny Texas,

I was not going to get into this but I have some free time--most of the girls are still gone or in their bed room and my wife is in our quarters so I have the office to myself for a while.

Since I was not raised up so to speak in the churches of Christ--I feel no necessity to hold a lot of views that are out of harmony with the texts. Keep in mind that I spent the formible years as an active Pentecostal. So I have discovered some things that have helped me keep the holy Spirit in a perspective that keeps it within the bounds of scriptures.

Here are some of the things I have learned

Acts 2:38 (KJS) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, [even] as many as the Lord our God shall call.

[1] the promise here is knowable
[2] It is not the same promise given earlier by Jesus to the Apostles--a careful reading of John 13:33 thru 18:1 will make that clear.

[3] Look at the context--ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, [even] as many as the Lord our God shall call.

The promise is not what happened to the Apostles--but you must have an understanding of how the Jews used it, believed it and practised it-- and then the texts do provide an answer.

Acts 13:26 --32(KJS) Men [and] brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. ..... 32 And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,

the gift of the holy Spirit here is that of the promished salvation--read all of verse39.

Here is another thing I have learned about the Holy Spirit--In the conversion process the Holy Spirit uses the Word of God{look at acts 2 to see this in action--orally instead of written]

Now, once I could understand that--then I could see how the Holy Spirit could work in my life
not just with the Word but as the Holy Spirit to aid me in my spiritual journey--That takes it outside the word at times..

I also understand that from a reading of the scriptures--only the apostles could pass on the supernatural spiritual gifts--Philip comes to mind as he did all those wonderful works--yet two apostles have to walk over 40 miles one way to pray for them, lay their hands on them and to impart the supernatural spiritual gifts. We have a negative witness to that event who attempted to buy that gift the apostles had but could not.

My suggestion to the resolution of how the holy Spirit works is to look at the Jewish view and understanding of the Holy Spirit--a passage to study that helps give that understanding is
Matt 3:10-12.
