I suppose it depends on the availability of information at a particular geographical location. There is merit in "�pposition" and "competition", but neither of these, unfortulately, can prevent the spreading of misinformation at times, especially, apparently, just before elections.
..... Freedom of the press is precious, but in countries that have not got it the population often is used to government controls, and most of them apparently are not looking for a better method.
..... I am reminded of a story according to which in a specific country (which I will not name) all rumors were thought to be untrue, except those that had been denied officially by the government. [LAUGHS SADLY]
