We are still having serious problems with "Hairy" who we named Merlin. He is behaving as if he was abused.

He refuses to move from the safe spot he has on the couch. If we sit too close or try to touch him, he shivers and trembles and tries to crawl UNDER the couch cushion to get away.

On a leash, he jumps like a crazy cat and refuses to walk. I can't drag him because he literally puts his feet down and clings into the grass.

If we put him in his crate, he refuses to come out. We tried leaving him alone to let him come out on his own time, and he stayed there for twelve hours. When we finally tried to get him out to try to give him some water, he bit my husband (fear based).

We have both spent hours holding him, talking to him, and petting him. As soon as he can get away from us, he runs and hides. He has not eaten any food until today. And the only thing I could get him to eat was some diced ham. He refused to eat it until I left the room and when I came back he literally jumped across the couch to get away from me.

I have never seen a dog this terrified. It is like he is completely wild. Today he has been coughing and gagging. I haven't noticed any vomit, but I am concerned that maybe this behavior is related to some physical issue.

I took him to the dog park hoping other dogs might cheer him up, and he did perk up a little but any time a person came over, he cowered in the dirt. I just don't know what to do. I know he needs time to adjust, but his behavior seems more extreme than any other dog I have ever rehabilitated or fostered before.
