Subject: QOTD For Tuesday, June 21st:

The following quotation is taken from Dragonfly In Amber by Diana Gabaldon. Copyright 1992 All Rights Reserved. Chapter 28, The Coming Of The Light:

"Claire," he said once more, with something like despair in his voice, "Claire, do you not see...Claire, you must speak to me! For God's sake, Claire, I don't know even was it a girl or a boy!"

I sat frozen, hands gripping the rough wood of the bench. After a moment, there was a heavy, crunching noise on the ground in front of me. I cracked my eyes open, and saw he had sat down, just as he was, on the wet gravel at my feet. He sat with bowed head, and the rain left spangles in his damp-darkened hair.

"Will ye make me beg?" he said.

"It was a girl," I said after a moment. My voice sounded funny; hoarse and husky. "Mother Hildegarde baptized her. Faith. Faith Fraser. Mother Hildegarde has a very odd sense of humor."

[> Happy Summer Solstice everyone!!! I have been pregnant only once in my life, I was 20 and it was an accident, and I had a miscarriage at 15 weeks. I know I was never meant to be anyone's mother, I have my adopted daughters and their babies, but I was never equipped to raise a human and I'm okay with that, I'm not bitter, but it still doesn't stop me from wondering every once in a while what my baby might have been. -- Cait, Tue, June 21 2022, 3:50:07

[> [> Oh Cait, I’m sorry aren’t quite the right words because it did work out, but Lallyhugs to you for all of it. My sister and her husband felt the same way, just didn’t believe they would be good parents. Both because of issues from their childhoods. And for 20 years they were constantly asked When are you going to have kids? Which was awful. I think society is finally accepting not all people want to be parents- and that’s fine. Diana writes these scenes that still make me cry every time. What do you think she meant by Mother Hildegard’s “odd sense of humor?” Thanks for the reminder of the Solstice! Did you see last week’s Strawberry Super Moon? -- Kathy in PA, Tue, June 21 2022, 4:37:34

[> [> [> Kathy in PA, I've always thought that Mother Hildegard's odd sense of humor referred to naming the baby "Faith," even though she didn't live. Also, I think it adds irony that Jamie's faith is very strong, while Claire's is more nebulous. Additionally, Claire has "lost faith" in Jamie, because he broke his word by dueling with BJR, the event that precipitated her miscarriage, even though DG has told us (I think) that Claire may well have lost the baby in any case. We do know that her pregnancy with Bree was fraught. -- DianaH, Wed, June 22 2022, 9:40:45
