    • That doesn't sound right to me, Tanya. I will tell you, though, that you might be able to get it fixed cheaper than the deductible and it won't go against you. DH and I only had one claim on our homeowners several years ago when the house was broken into. Then, when we tried to switch insurances, they wouldn't accept us because we'd had a claim.     • Hey Tanya, I just googled 'broken glass on french doors' and got lots of hits. I know that we have had the double-pane glass on some of our windows replaced when they either got cracked or the seal broke and they got foggy. The window people come out and measure and then return to actually replace the glass. It doesn't seem to be a big deal and the service charge is less than your deductible.     • I just asked my DH what you should do and he said not to do the "Recovery" disc but to do "Systems Restore" and pick a date prior to the download yesterday. The system restore is found under programs. It will say "System Restore" and give you an early date to pick from. DH said absolutely do not delete everything and do a recovery. My system came pretty well loaded- the only thing I had to add was Microsoft Office for Mac (Word, Excell, PowerPoint, and Entourage, all 2004) I also was able to partition a section of my hard drive to run Windows XP so I could play the Sims game, and access the few websites that display better in Internet Explorer.     • Alison, I would highly recommend a Mac, whatever kind you want. If your husband is seriously considering one then I suggest he goes HERE and checks out some of the tutorials. The first tutorial is about iTunes. If he's a diehard pc user he might not want a mac. I love my mac and think everyone should have one *G*. Remember that it is built to run Windows as well. He should go to an Apple store or Apple dealer and get someone to show him why he'd want a mac.   • My DH had this happen to him less than a month ago. We were advised by Mcaffee to reboot from factory settings. My DH tried to down load a new firewall that he heard good news about but it would not pick it up. He downloaded all our picks to his email and then rebooted to fatory settings. No problems since. We've had the conversation since he was about 8 that every family has to decide what's appropriate for them and most wouldn't agree with our choices. As far as movies, I don't let him see R even on DVD at home (his dad does but that's another issue :) Even the PG-13 ones, I'd rather have him see the more violent action movies than anything sexual. However, it was with the premise that if she came to something she was not comfortable reading, she could skip it and go to the next chapter or paragraph or whatever.     • My eldest brother gave me Gone With The Wind for my 10th birthday. My mother had never read it but had seen the movie. My brother told me that if I had any questions, whether it be about the history of the Civil War or about the "content" of the book, to ask him. He would speak honestly with me. I'll never forget that and how much it made me love him because he thought me mature enough to handle it. Now, with my sons, I am the open and forth-coming parent whereas my DH is a bit more reserved and protective. Kids "know it all" these days and it's a lot more graphic than it was in my day (I'm 48).   I've asked the LOL advertisers to tell us a bit about their enterprises, and so far we've heard from JudyL and Colly. Now Jeanne Treat is going to give us a bit of information on how Dark Birthright came about....
  
  
  
  In the past year, I've spoken to reading groups and encountered some themes in the questions asked. People wanted to know about the research that went into the book. Whew! There was so much, from the investigation of the geography, history, and everyday life to complex subjects like midwifery, herbal medicine, whisky, and ancient spiritual traditions.
  
  As the first chapters were taking shape, I used books and the internet, and then we packed our bags and headed for Europe. It was the summer of 2003 and unusually warm for late June. After a short stay in Belfast, Ireland, we boarded a ferry called the Seacat that took us to Troon, Scotland. Troon was a quaint little sea town with a lovely harbor and marina. In the train station, we were greeted by three ravens sitting on a latticework above the waiting platform. We took the train to Glasgow and another to Inverness, where we disembarked to spend a few days. Inverness is a bustling old city in the Scottish Highlands, situated at the mouth of the River Ness. We visited a castle, a church, and took a bus tour, but the highlight was visiting nearby Culloden Moor. Some of you have seen my pictures of the battlefield, but none can describe the feeling that you get walking that ground and touching the stones of fallen clans.
  
  The next day, my husband and I broke from our companions and rented a car to travel to the east coast. We were on a mission to visit the site where the book begins, a wee fishing village south of Cruden Bay called Whinnyfold. (Pronounced Finnyfaa in Gaelic) I'd had visions about the place, from a magnificent point overlooking the North Sea, to four rows of stone cottages, and the red/black/gray rock geography. In a dream, I'd felt the power of a storm coming in from the southeast and the wind and spray on my face.
  
  We stayed the night above a tavern in a town called Ellon and set out in the morning to find the place. There was a problem. Even though we were armed with a GPS and a paper map, Whinnyfold was no where to be found. No one would tell us where it was and reacted in terror when we mentioned its name. A waitress told us "Ach! Ye dinna wanna go there now, because of the things that have happened." Then she disappeared and never returned, leaving us to guess the amount of the check.
  
  "Is this the place where tourists disappear?" my husband asked. But he was kidding, so we continued on.
  
  We drove to Cruden Bay and headed south along the coast, on roads that were no wider than a narrow driveway. At times we seemed to be traveling through someone's farm property and were anxious that we would encounter another vehicle coming the opposite way. How did two cars pass here? When we had almost given up, we looked up and saw a small sign that said "Whinnyfold" and pointed down an even narrower alley. We pulled in and drove about 100 yards. We had arrived at the cliff-top community but it seemed that we were entering a private neighborhood. There were four rows of stone cottages to our right and a newer white house (in Scotland this means the 1800's) and the cliffs to our left. We parked the car alongside that house and got out.
  
  An old Scottish gentleman came out of his house and greeted us. We asked if it was all right to park there and he said "That's a fine place to park! Yer welcome to park there."
  
  My husband explained that we wanted to look at the village, walk out to the point, and hike down the cliffs to the bay.
  
  "In Scotland," the man said in a heavy brogue. "The waterfront is public property. Yer welcome to hike down there but yer likely to break yer neck. We dinna get many visitors here and the path is not well worn."
  
  We'd traveled from America and driven across Scotland on an unfamiliar side of the road. No rough path would stop us now.
  
  "Do ye know the history of this place?" the man said as he pointed to the white house. "Bram Stoker lived in that house. He wrote Dracula from there! See the ruins of that castle in the distance? Dracula come up the Bay of Whinnyfold to that castle."
  
  No wonder that people tried to steer us away. It was steeped in the supernatural but that was not about to stop us. We spent the next hours hiking down the steep cliff to the bay, then back up again, taking pictures all the while. It was a lot harder going up the cliff face. When we were topside, my husband remarked at how similar this was to the vision I'd had. Indeed, I was overwhelmed by the likeness. The old man joined us again and my husband left us to photograph kittiwakes and puffins on the cliffs. I walked out to the point with the old man and felt the beauty and the power of the North Sea. Even on a calm day like this, the wind from the water gave me goose bumps. It felt like home.
  
  I decided to ask a question related to my vision. "When does the bad weather roll in from the southeast over those purple mountains?"
  
  The old man smiled. "The bad weather doesna come in from the southeast. It comes in direct from the east. But it USED to come in from the southeast a long long time ago. Ye've been here afore have ye?"
  
  All I could say was AYE.
  
  "It's not unusual for this place," he remarked.
  
  My husband returned and we thanked the man, vowing to return someday. We packed our car and headed out the narrow road towards Cruden Bay. We were on a roll and wanted to visit the Well of the Dead before we continued on to Edinburgh.
  
  We returned to Scotland in April of 2004 and again in 2008 at the invitation of a historian. Both times we worked with her as well as a maritime museum and research library. While there, I donated books to the Aberdeenshire library system.

  • Today is Be Aggravated By Sears Repair Service Day. We've been without a refrigerator for over a week now, using a camp cooler for essentials.       • Hi, Noelle - we bought an LG frontloader and matching dryer through Sears with the pedestals and I've been very happy about that. Was also happy with the young sales person we dealt with - very helpful with comparisons and knew his stuff. Am completely disgusted though with the appliance repair center people. Other appliance repair I've called are backed up at least a week for refrigerators and I have to live out of a cooler for another friggin' week!
