Maine Highland Games are this Saturday at Thomas Point Beach in Brunswick, Maine. It's a beautiful spot, a great games for families, and is usually a lovely day. Anyone planning on attending?         Hi Nancy, Island Falls - 'bout 90 miles south of Caribou :-) That's where my Mom is from - I was born there, left when I was 2 (militarybrat) but we were there almost every summer and while my Dad was in Vietnam. My parents met in Presque Isle.         It's a magical, mystical place and I love living here. I'm not that far north...I'm in the western Mountains. But Maine is quite different than any other place I've ever been to. Not sure just what it is, but it's different. And wonderful. Come on back in October!!! The Gathering is the first weekend. Free camping and a weekend of fun stuff. Maine in the Fall. Hoser Gathering!!! -- Betsy Barefootspinner, Wed, August 13 2008, 18:38:15
Come to our Gathering in Maine! It's the first weekend in October, this year 2008, 10/3-10/5. It should be a beautiful time for a Hoser Gathering, warm days, chilly nights, NO BUGS, and beautiful foliage and best of all, LOTS OF HOSERS!!!!

There will be a camp fire all weekend with a huge Bon Fire and Clan Gathering (Clan MacHoser, of course) with a pig roast and Ceilidh Sat. evening. There will be all sorts of other activities as well, including but not limited to mountain climbing, music, dance, leaf- peeping by auto, kilted massages, book swap, whisky nosing, wine tasting, tons of love and laughter.

There's plenty of room for camping and lots of local motels and B+B's. I have a ton of room for anyone who wishes to just pitch a tent.

Where Hosers gather, there be laughter, fun and love. Be a part of it. There's no limit to the number of people and no time limit either. Come one, come all. Inside the first reply for my email and I'll pop off an invitation to the official Maine Gathering web site.

- I was thinking about making a comment about you being left handed and being an Aussie who has to do everything backwards. Which led me to wonder. I've always heard that Australian rules baseball they run the bases the opposite way from American rules. Is that true? And what do they do during the Olympics? I'm very excited b/c one of the Team USA baseball players is from the Univ. of FL and I know him and his parents. Actually, UF has a lot of former or current athletes competing in the Games, both for the US and for other countries. We have lots of swimmers (Dara Torres being the most noteworthy), lots of track athletes, a woman's soccer player I know pretty well and the baseball guy. It's called a Renaissance Faire.

I woke up early this morning. Dressed in bizarre clothing, I ran out of the house without breakfast to meet up with my friend and his girlfriend, also dressed in bizarre clothing. The three of us proceeded to drive for nearly an hour, then paid five dollars for parking, and happily handed over free passes, feeling ourselves very lucky indeed to not have to pay twenty dollars a person at the gate. Once inside, we met up with still more friends, some of whom were dressed in bizarre clothing. My friend was held up at the entrance due to the amount of obscure weaponry he had that needed to be seen and accounted for.

From 10:30 am until seven in the evening, we walked around for hours on end, sat in the sun for nearly an hour, then did some more walking. At seven, we crowded around an outdoor stage and yelled and screamed and sang like a bunch of lunatics, happily accompanied by the people on stage, and some of the audience. Then we went home, getting horribly lost in the process due to a GPS malfunction.

The result? My feet are killing me, everything else is sore, I'm exhausted, and I've got the worst sunburn I've had since the last time I did this, back in May. I also forgot to eat for most of the day, so my stomach is still skeptically poking over my dinner and giving me dirty looks.

And just think. My friend Rancid Harry, the village leper, gave me an extra free pass. Tomorrow, I get to do it all again!

At least I'm not on cast for this one. I played Will Scarlett at the one back in May, so not only was I walking around all day, I was swordfighting and getting stabbed in gut. That said, I'm totally auditioning for both next year. Because I'm [happily] insane.

The two faires around here are the New York Renaissance Faire (aka New York or NYRF) in Tuxedo, and a much smaller, much newer faire (featuring many of the same faces as NYRF) up in New Paltz called Hudson Valley Mayfaire, or Mayfaire. - So I was watching the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics last night and thought they were pretty good. But one thing that puzzled me during the parade of nations. It seemed like they had a three song rotation of some Asian sounding song, an African sounding song and ...Scotland the Brave??? And it seemed to come up in the rotation when it had the oddest pairing with whatever country happened to be coming in. Then when Great Britian was announced...the perfect time to play Scotland the Brave...it was one of the other songs. The other thing that bugged me was, if it wasn't a live event, why when they came back from commercial break did they have to say "and while we were on break x, y, and z were introduced" and whizzed through about four countries.   - I too noticed "Scotland the Brave" in the background; at first I thought I was having a stroke or something. I turned to my co-worker and asked if he heard it too. It made zero sense to me why they played it or when they played it. Did the commentators ever explain why it was being played? But over all the Opening Ceremonies were AWESOME!
