  Highland hopes for Hollywood hit: filmmakers seeking locations for blockbuster set in Scotland

  WE'VE had Braveheart, Rob Roy and Highlander in a series of blockbuster films that put Scotland on the celluloid map.
  Now the country is set to star again, in a series of big-budget Hollywood adventures that could attract actors of the calibre of James McAvoy and Keira Knightley.
  
  Outlander, the story of an 18th-century Highland warrior hero, is based on a best-selling American novel that mixes action, romance and time travel.
  
  It has been turned into a screenplay by Randall Wallace, an American with an impeccable pedigree for Scottish-Hollywood blockbusters after initiating and writing Braveheart.
  
  The American production company, Essential Pictures, has thrown its weight behind the project. It aims to shoot next spring and hopes the film will be the first in a "franchise" as enduring as James Bond and Indiana Jones.
  
  The budget is likely to be around £25m and it is almost certain the film will shoot on location in Scotland, following the dollar's recent rise against the pound.
  
  James McAvoy, who is now well established as Scotland's top young film actor, after The Last King Of Scotland, Atonement and the action movie Wanted, is an obvious contender for a starring role.
  
  Knightley could be in line for the role of his sweetheart. Her mother is the Scottish writer Sharman Macdonald, and she is already involved in a film of King Lear that is likely to shoot in Scotland.
  
  Last night, a Hollywood insider told Scotland on Sunday: "Randall has written an adaptation of Outlander. Essential, who commissioned the adaptation and controls the film rights for the book, is going out to directors."
  
  Trish Shorthouse, film commissioner for the Scottish Highlands and Islands, said Outlander would give rural Scotland an economic boost.
  
  "Anything of that size would be of great significance to the rural economy in the north of Scotland, especially during a time when petrol prices are crunching in on locations," she said. "We are starting to see a little bit of that happening, with cutbacks in location budgets."
  
  The Outlander series of books is written by Mexican-American writer Diana Gabaldon and they are much more popular in the US than the UK.
  
  They begin in the 1940s, when Claire Randall, an English nurse, goes on holiday to Inverness, visits standing stones, blacks out, regains consciousness and thinks she is in the middle of a battle re-enactment – only slowly realising she has travelled back in time to the mid-18th century.
  
  Randall finds herself caught up in Scottish history, just a few years before the 1745 Jacobite Rising, with tensions running high. She meets, and gradually becomes romantically involved with, a young Highlander called Jamie Fraser, despite the fact that she already has a husband in the 20th century.
  
  The first novel appeared in 1991 and was called Cross Stitch in the UK. Subsequent instalments shift the focus to the Jacobite Rising itself, Culloden and finally the American Revolution. There have been six books so far, with more to come
  
  "They have got a terrific following in America," said Alastair Cunningham, who organises tours of Outlander locations, including Castle Leod in Easter Ross (the model for the MacKenzie stronghold of Castle Leoch in the novels), the Clava Cairns, near Inverness, Loch Ness and Culloden.
  
  "They really put the spotlight on the romance of Scotland. A large number of our clients come over because of the romance of the place, the castles and the clans."

  • Just an aside - I want everyone to know that Mr Cunningham, who is quoted in the article as running tours to Outlander sites, is the same Mr Cunningham who met me with at Culloden House during one of my tours ( I even bought the guy drinks), picked my brains about my tour and the books (which he had never read), and then proceeded to advertise his "Jamie and Claire" tours, even trying to get on the Lallybroch site. I believe that everyone has the right to free enterprise, and I love the Scots and I work closely with the good people in Scotland - including the tourist board - all the time. But he was just plain sneaky. And he probably still hasn't read the books. Sorry if this sounds like sour grapes, but he's been under my skin for about four years now. In have been a Hornblower affectionado for many years and at first didn't care for what they did to the story line when they filmed it (with that handsome Welsh actor), but it dawned on me that, regardless of the liberties taken with the plot, the series was an excellent portrayal of the days of fighting sail, so I began to love it! I could go on, but my point is that I am willing to see even a film which is less than perfect, just to see how someone interprets the story and characters, as well as the history.         • Not me, I was exhausted. I got home from the LONG day just before 9pm (in time to tuck the kids in), I yawned thru the TV coverage for half an hour, then decided to just go to bed, & see the results this morning. It was very interesting to work the election as an "Election Inspector.". Lots of voters--young, old, first time, experienced--nearly EVERYONE was there. My little city has about 4600 registered voters. There were over 1000 absentee voters (like 23%), & we had about 2500 vote in person yesterday. The city clerk said we had about 78-79% total that voted. I think that's fantastic. I felt like I said hello to the entire town, lol. I was a "floater" so I got to work pretty much all the positions while others took breaks. There was a line when the polls opened, but after that it was just a steady stream of people all day.   • There are moments in a person's lifetime where one will never forget where one was when a history-making event occurs. Last night was one for me and, I hope, for the rest of the country, the rest of the world. I am so proud to be an American today. But, souring the joy of this monumental event, is the sad, hateful truth that Proposition 8 (at least at the moment of my writing) will pass. Prop 8 , the call to define legal marriage as between a male and a female only, will deny the civil rights of many Californians. That is just the surface effect. It implies that we can legislate the civil rights of any group that "we" may not see as viable, or valuable, or deserving of civil rights.         • I watched the speeches last night and thought John McCain was eloquent and Barack Obama was gracious, when he could have been loudly triumphant. The world is a better place today. After the vote for president I was watching California and Proposition 8. At my son's elementary school we have a wonderful teacher who married his partner of 15 years in 2005, when same-sex marriage became legal in Canada. This man is a role model and a mentor and the idea that his marriage is a threat to "traditional" family values is ridiculous. Heterosexuals have long been ruining their own marriages and abusing their own children, all without the "help" of the gay and lesbian community. Here, any politician who links his or her religion to governance is committing political suicide. The only safeguard on civil/human rights is a complete separation of church and state. If, where you are living, the predominant language is French I can see where the word is in usage - as Aislinn said, it's common in Canada that that word is used to describe persons of First Nations/French heritage. Umpteen years ago, my g-g-g-g-g-g-g-grandmother was described in census records as a mulatto (dictionary: 'the first-generation offspring of a black person and a white person') but that's not a common word any more. I think they use 'African-American' regardless of generation. In our family here in Canada, persons of mixed African/Caucasian heritage are called 'niece' and 'nephew'. *grin* I'm curious to see what others say.   • I would like to comment about how proud I am of the way the Social Board has responded to the election. The Democrats have acknowledged McCain's gracious speech, and while expressing their pride, don't come off as gloating or smug. No jabs at the other side. And the Republicans are gracefully congratulating the other side, recognizing even in their disappointment that we have elections every four years.   • My DH and I usually take the our sons with us to vote but I'm very concerned about the lines today. Our polling place is a five minute walk away, but it serves a large area, so I think we'll go while the kids are in school.   • Well i just got back from my 2 hour shift volunteering at my local polling place.   I woke up at 6AM here in Virginia and glanced out the window at the Elementary School across the street, where voting is held...WHOA! The street is PACKED with cars! People are pouring to the polls...my DH got dressed and hurried across the street. He called a minute later and reported that the line ended more than 100 yards away from the door, and people were still pouring in.WOW! I'm sure glad I work at home and don't have to fight that traffic...I think I'll go this afternoon, hopefully the chaos will have died down a bit.

  • DH and I voted "absentee in person" on a touch-screen machine (not the usual absentee voter paper ballot) very early in October at the DMV in our county in VA. We were in and out in less than 5 minutes. My running around takes me past that DMV several times a week and last week, the final week of "absentee in person," the line wrapped around the building all day, every day. I read in the news that one outcome of heavy voting this year could be that Congress will mandate a no-excuse-is-necessary-to-vote-early program in every state. My only complaint is that VA will phase out the touch screen machines as they age and transition to some form of electronically read paper ballot (easier in recount situations). This, just 4 or 5 years after implementing the touch-screens...which have hardly been paid for (the only basis for my complaint). (NT) -- Joyce Mc, Tue, November 04 2008, 4:31:53
  • I voted TWICE! lol I walked over to the school and I got in line at 7:00 in Virginia, there were probably 150 people infront of me. After about 10 minutes a worker came out and started calling for people who's last name started with U - Z. I raised my hand, hey that's me. She said go in to the front directly to table 5. They were signing people in according to last name and there was no one in the U - Z line. And thanks to my father and my divorce I am back to being a W. I was back at home in 30 mins. WOW then I went to take an elderly friend to her poll and because of her age and health they moved her to the front of the line. She doesn't read and write well so I had to go to the ballot with her. So it feels like I voted twice. I dropped her off and got to work at 10:30. Unbelievable. Two polling places and I-395 into DC by 10:30. Can you tell I'm not used to getting breaks.
