I am not knocking the dogs. I am just mentioning that blue is a recessive gene that has to be introduced. A blue or blue brindle...either way can only result when the parents either display or at least carry the gene.

This means, the parents had to carry it. Brindle without the dilute gene does not produce blue or blue brindle dogs. The brindle parents must have the dilute gene.

So, what this means is those dogs had to have gotten the blue gene from somewhere...and most likely they got it from an outcross into one of the breeds I mentioned above...Neapolitan, Great Dane, APBT, or AmStaff...if not a combo of those breeds bred into the boerboel. I am sure the "blue" gene has not been in the original boerboel program since its origin for all this time and just now showing up.

The point is, "the best to best" idea is the right idea...and if those "best dogs" had an outcross in them, who cares. As long as one moves in the right direction down from there, it can work fine. I imagine Night Train has produced a number of good dogs has he not? So, it wouldn't bother me a bit if he had something else in him, and IMO it shouldn't bother you either if that is the case. And, since he carried the blue gene himself...it probably was the case.
