Subject: So what do you think Obama will do in Afghanistan?

Ok, General McChrystal says they need more troops or they will lose the war. (Actually, there isn't a "war" per se, there's a political struggle, because the Taliban are native Afghans, but lets not go there - save to say that you don't win wars that aren't wars.) Obama talked very tough about Afghanistan during the election, but he's not that happy over the expense, and he's got a lot of opposition from his own party over yet another troop increase in Afghanistan in less than a year. (Yes, one more would make three this year.) Moreover, the allies fighting with us there are not wanting an increase on their part, Germany, France, England and so forth have large majorities saying "we don't see the need of this".

Now, the problem with that attitude is simply that the Taliban is also in Pakistan, and if they take over Afghanistan, then they'll take Pakistan, or probably so. And if they take Pakistan, you'll have an organization that's very friendly with any number of terrorist groups with access to nuclear bombs. Not a good scenario, any way you want to paint it. I'm pretty much a live and let live person myself, but I'd be solidly behind destroying all Pakistani nuclear facilities and missile sites by whatever means necessary at that point - because that's what you'll be doing in spades a few years down the road after they give nukes to whoever the terrorist of the day is and they get used.

So what do you think Obama will do?
