How many of us kept up playing our instruments? Some of them were rented or we used the ones in the band hall, especially us tuba players but I picked up a second-hand (OK, it was really more like 5th or 6th hand) fiberglass Conn sousaphone a couple of years ago and have played it in some neighborhood parades on the 4th of July. Before that I borrowed tubas and baritones from local high schools or my trumpet (my original instrument that I auditioned for Mr. Lewis to get into "A" Band. I got in but the braces were too painful) ((Thank you Mr. Briggs for the suggestion to switch to the bass))to play in church and I've continued playing keyboards with small groups and worship teams. Apropos of nothing, I still have dreams about showing up late for a concert and not knowing what music we were supposed to play, or on another variation, ready to step out on the field not knowing which routine we were doing.<>

OK, I apologize, this ground has been covered somewhat in another thread under RE- Not So Mind Bending Questions. In my defense I should say that I was in total freefall after viewing the horrifying picture of myself posted on the MIA page. For crying out loud, I'm not even high school age here, this is from William P. Hobby Middle School, Obviously some attempt at sibling payback from my sister, the webmaster...
I am still a stringbean though at 6'4 and 205 lbs, some things never change.

My recurring "band dream" (not too often, thankfully) is of turning up in the band hall without my flute and trying to lay low so I won't get called on to play and thus incur The Wrath of Bob. I then remember, "Hey, I've already graduated, I'm not even in band anymore," but am told emphatically that that's not an acceptable excuse....

The moment graduation was over in 1977, my dad sold my trombone. But in 1984 my husband bought me a new Holton trombone just like the one I had in high school. I play in brass ensembles at church. Playing my horn brings back alot of good memories.

I have not touched my French Horn in about 15 years. I do, however, play the piano daily, and still take lessons! It is one of the best stress relievers!

I kept playing in the college band at Notre Dame. My last two gigs in college occurred in 1979: marched in a football game played in Tokyo, and played in a number of concerts there. Our band, along with the Miami University band, accompanied Sadeo Watanabe (jazz saxophonist) in a marching band/jazz concert at a baseball stadium in Tokyo. It was fun! I was selected, along with some other seniors, to play on the Japanese version of the Tonight Show; that evening I met, and got to talk to George Lucas, of Star Wars fame. Lucas was another guest on the show. My last gig was a college basketball game in December 1979 (ND vs. UCLA), with the pep band that always played at the games. AFter the basketball game, I never played my horn again. NOt because I didn't want to, but rather because the opportunity never presented itself.

The most recent time I touched and actually played my clarinet was for a college band reunion in October 2002. My children were shocked/stunned/whatever that I could "play" the clarinet.

Aaaah, Rick, you bring back memories of you, me, and Jimmy Adair all slogging through lessons with Mrs. Estelle Moore.... No wonder we fell for each other when we were so young. Had to have SOMETHING positive come out of the ordeal, huh?
