some more positive news...in mid-December the American Institue of Architects adopted a proposal which requires all new buildings to cut the use of fossil fuels in constructing and operating new buildings by at least 50 percent in the next 5 years. By 2015 the goal is to cut fossil fuel use by 60 percent and by 2030 the goal is that all new buildings contructed would be carbon neutral.

According to these folks (AIA) buildings account for 48 percent of U.S. energy consumption and generate far more greenhouse gas emissions than any other sector. There are estimates that 22.5 million buildings will be created in the next 20 years...

I think of the buildings most of the western world works in. When I go up to francis' school I am schocked that no one wears sweaters...the heat is over the top, approaching discomfort for us naked humans. We are idiots and buildings are really minipower plants...what would happen if buildings were designed for maximum energy efficiency and alternative energy use. What would happen if people working in buildings became miniactivists and protested any temp. above 60 degress in winter and below 90 degrees in summer? Another thought is that 5 billion square feet of buildings are renovated each year. Imagine if these efficiency standards were used for renovations...the reductions in carbon dixide emissions would be tremendous.

My global opinion regarding Biomass and any pursuit of alternative trends: energy/tech/healing/art/education is very personal. I am inspired by protean types - those who begin trends: those who seek out information and influences for more interesting reasons than merely finding a personally eccentric signature.......those who actively go their own way in addressing their concerns for the world..the finest kind of human.

The truth for me is that my personal vigor is affected more by the humans who are passionate and active in this world, (in spite of the encumbrances this world gifts us) than by the distress of our world. Yeah, I know, its selfish and an entirely other argument!
