• I agree generally but of course the FA has sweet FA to do with the expansion of European competitions. Personally I think the FA should prioritise the FA Cup with unlimited replays and if big clubs prefer not to enter then fair enough. The biggest problem in football today is the ever increasing massive gap between the top clubs and the rest.   • It’s tricky because big teams will start playing weakened teams and then there’ll be calls that the competition is not being respected and it will be an inferior cup. More of the prem money should permeate down the pyramid, but there’s no easy way of doing it and English football in general is in good health, the championsup is a fantastic league and I’m not sure there are any countries that sustain 5 pro leagues and have attendances and stadia down the pyramid like we do in England.     • The bigger clubs play weakened teams often as it is. We made 7 changes for a game against a decent second tier club who also fielded a weakened team. Cup replays are a rare opportunity for smaller clubs to have a big pay day - has to be earned of course. I'm sorry that has ended.       • Depends, Utd and Arsenal haven’t, bet they wouldn’t if it was a replay. I’m not saying it’s a good thing or an ideal scenario, but I get why it’s happened, as OP says there’s pressure coming from other areas, something has to give at some point. I’m also sorry it has ended, however a better solution is if the extra revenue generated permeates to all clubs further down then there is fairness and not luck of a draw who gets the £££.   • You're right, the FA are subjects to the will of UEFA and FIFA in that sense. Those two organisations are the ones who want to squeeze the most out of the top level and not develop the lower levels (which adds to the gap in wages, as you mention).   • That's not quite correct though. The Championship teams and lower ones have more league games, but they tend to go out of the cup competitions earlier and aren't involved in European competitions.     • Championship teams play a minimum of 48 games a season. Even if we go on to win the fa cup, we can not play more games than a championship team.       • This is true, but my perception is that Prem clubs who are more likely to complain are the so-called big ones who play in Europe and reach the latter stages of the cups more often. I think they complain more than the average Prem clubs. But I agree that it's a bit nonsensical, they are only the tip of the pyramid, not the whole of it.   • But that makes no sense, smaller teams will always want to play the game away due to the higher gate recipes being split, as much as people romanticise about the David and Goliath of the FA cup, the main reason smaller teams want to advance and play the big teams is the financial benefit, not the completion element of saying they beat a prem team, if they were drawn at home that money will never be generated.     • In addition to the money, players and fans want to visit the big grounds. Many tedious prem games there more recently but at the time it was a thrill to travel to Villa and the win there was one of the best occasions for years.   • True that repeating our experience of 50 years ago would be a pale shadow. Even to repeat West Ham's would be no more than Wigan have done in modern times, and look where that has got them.
