“If it is true that you were in charge of training this animal, then I have nothing to fear,” said Lenariah, returning Tevion’s grin. She admired the rich, copper color of the mare, its gentle curves and its jovial eyes. It seemed quite peculiar how such a large creature could appear so graceful. Under Tevion’s gentle hands, the mare was no longer intimidating or daunting. With a slight trace of hesitation, she ran her own fingers through the soft mane.

“How odd it is,” she murmured as she stared deep into the horse’s strands. “Who would have ever imagined riding such a placid creature? I have heard only rumors of the mighty steeds that are led into battle, almost as if they were weapons themselves. And yet, here it is; so serene, so calm, even after facing the terrors of war.” She shifted her gaze to Tevion. “If only people were able to emerge so unshaken from the trials of life.”

For a brief moment after this comment had been made, the steady rhythm with which Tevion had been stroking the mare faltered. Lenariah silently regretted her words. She had an awful habit of saying things that others did not want to hear. How foolish of her to make an observation about emotional wounds to a man who had recently almost lost his sister forever!

“But perhaps we should not discuss the heart of humans-they are far too complicated. Please, tell me how to groom this spectacular animal.”
