Ovid gives a positive use for mimesis, in that the choice of a model can be used to manipulate desire. In other words, if you see that you desire something so strongly that it overcomes your reason, purposely take something else as your model in order to use the second desire to overcome the first.

Thus, if you are in love with a woman whom you can't have, Ovid's cure is to point out to yourself all her flaws and emphasize the merits of another woman, using the second love to neutralize the first. Ovid is tongue-in-cheek, but he is also serious.
