Subject: Choosing one's model
In reply to: JD 's message, "A meditation on mimesis" on 20:29:26 04/27/08 Sun

The careful choosing of one's model has been a theme that keeps popping up this semester. As we've seen in 'Long Day's Journey into night' consciousness of the mimetic nature of desire or of models or doubles does not exempt one from participating in imitative desire. Christ is the obvious model. But there are still those models that we pick, consciously or otherwise, who influence our choice in music, our love of particular authors, or even our major. I feel like im a little more aware now than I was at the beginning of the semester concerning my wants, desires, and preferences, and sometimes I catch myself doing something rather unreasonable because of some imitative urge. It does seem like there could be a little problem if you start to say to yourself, "Well, I know that I only like ****** because that's what ***** likes. What do I REALLY like?" Its hard to not assume that somewhere, deep down, we have some type of natural direct desire from our oh so unique personalty.
