PONTYPOOL coach Steve Jones blamed the clubís so-called ësuperstarsí for the sub-standard display against Bonymaen on Saturday when he admitted they had received a ëwake-up callí.

Pontypool were fortunate to win 27-23 and afterwards Jones paid tribute to their opponents.

ìI take my hat off to Bonymaen. Theyíve had a few problems at Parc Mawr but today they played with an enthusiasm, spirit and willingness to win which has epitomised Welsh rugby for 150 years.

ìWe had a superior side on paper but their determination was a credit to their young side.

ìThat will show the so-called superstars who get paid a lot of money how to play rugby.

ìOur superstars thought about just turning up, but Bonymaen showed us no respect and played the way Welsh rugby should be played.

ìOur discipline was very poor and I back the ref every inch of the way for penalising it.

ìWeíve got superstars who think they can talk back to the ref, but if they do that they wonít be playing for Pontypool.

ìIt shows how rattled we were by these young lads and I wouldnít say weíd win an egg and spoon race let alone the league title the way the superstars performed.

ìItís a wake-up call to everybody. When sides like Bonymaen compete like that it shows this division is open.

ìI was bitterly disappointed with our team performance given the preparations weíve had.

ìI canít say there was a phase I was pleased with in our game and at the end of the day, the whole of Pontypool is relieved.î

Bonymaen coach Simon Davies commented: ìOur commitment throughout the 80 minutes was very good and I think we have a lot brighter future than we did last year.

ìWe realised at the end of last season we needed to change the squad drastically and weíve done that and today weíve set a benchmark we must strive to achieve week-in, week-out.î

Pontypool full back David Smith went off with a stretched shoulder but shouldnít be out long while prop Alun Phillips pulled out just before the start with an ankle problem.

Former British Lion John Devereaux is still awaiting the result of a knee scan but expects to be back in action in a week or two, as does centre Johnathan Hawker who has a slight hamstring strain.
