Bitter rivals unite to demand answers from the WRU
by Noel Davies

THEY are arch rivals on the field, as Saturday's match proved - but Pontypool and Aberavon have joined forces in demanding answers from the WRU about their future.

Pontypool beat Aberavon 25-13, but the two clubs have met in Cardiff to discuss the future of the game and, with the backing of Division One's other clubs, they hope to meet the WRU to discuss their concerns.

And they agree action is needed now. They have already called on the game's district and national representatives to resign if the WRU goes back on its original decision which allows promotion from the First Division to the Premiership for this season's champions.

"We have similar views on how the game should go forward," said Aberavon director of rugby Eddie Jones.

" We feel the leadership at the WRU is very weak and it seems they are indecisive and incapable of making decisions."

Pontypool team manager Tony Clarke is just as firm in his views on Welsh rugby's ruling body. He suggests the WRU is keeping its cards close to its chest.

"We want the First Division clubs to join as one voice together," he said.

" The WRU needs to remember that we are all in business, but to me it seems we are the only ones acting professionally. They are not disclosing below the Premiership what their plans are and we've a right to know."

But the WRU has strongly efuted these claims and secretary Dennis Gethin describes them as "sinister".

"Before any decision is made on the future of Welsh rugby we will be contacting all of the clubs," he said.

"Both myself and Glanmor Griffiths are meeting with Dave Escott (the representative of the First Division clubs) next week for discussions.

"We have been in regular contact with him and also have a working party putting forward recommendations. "This is why I refute any suggestions we are doing things behind closed doors - nothing could be more sinister."

The two clubs have been angered by recent reports claiming promotion from the Welsh First Division to the Premiership could once again be pushed to the back burner after previously being agreed for this season's champions.

"The vote went there should be promotion. If the WRU are going back on that, then in my mind the national and district representatives should resign in support of the clubs that put them there, otherwise they will be tainted as liars, too. They have a duty to support us," said Clarke.

Jones added: "We want the WRU to take us into their confidence, too, and let us know where they are going. "Fundamentally it's bad leadership at the top, and I don't believe they want to be questioned."

Gethin declined to comment on the other comments made by Jones.
