I think she would have said that we're supposed to take care of those who need help. Loving your neighbor as yourself, etc.

As to what she would say about the intended meaning of that particular reading? I think she would say that we're supposed to read it as the Holy Spirit intended it to be read. If the orginal writers were writing specifically about missionaries, which makes sense to me, that's how we're supposed to read it. And I think Mother Teresa would agree.

But reading it that way doesn't mean that we're not supposed to do the same for other people, too. We're supposed to love our neighbors as ourselves. And we wouldn't let ourselves starve, go naked, etc.

I think the reading makes the most sense if it's understood to be talking specifically about missionaries.

Being a Christian has never been about doing the minimum, so I don't think it makes a difference that it was specifically about missionaries, except that it makes semse that way. :)

We can extend the example to cover all of God's children. That's not contrary to the Gospel. It only means we've learned something.

But that's just my opinion.

What do you think?

Joan
