Subject: Who is more likely to ID themselves as American first?
In reply to: Joan 's message, "Did any of you see the CNN show last night?" on 03:28:19 08/27/07 Mon

Christians or Muslims.

According to this poll, it's Muslims. I know that many are afraid that the Muslims in this country aren't "really American" because their religion is all important and trumps politics, but it's they who ID themselves as American first, Muslim second. Christians call themselves Christian first, American second.

There are some downright scary Christians in the CNN show. I don't know how they keep their non-profit/religion tax status w/ all the political games they play from the pulpit.

Plus, a few of them are obviously "for profit" businesses.

The one that really bugged me was the one that was using the Jews to foster their own political agenda. Even the Jews, who are supposed to benefit from their "support", aren't buying it.

This was one scary show.

It also talked about how Jimmy Carter left the SBC over the direction is was taking--purely political direction.

These "churches" (IMO, they stopped being legitimate churches when they entered the political arena) are less about Christ and more about politics every year it seems.

I see more similarities between them and radical Islam than I do betweent them and legitimate Christian churches.

"The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll found that of the 750 Christians in the survey, 59 percent identify themselves first by their faith, then as Americans, while 36 percent described themselves in the reverse.

CNN's findings are not that different from those in a recent Pew Research Center poll on Muslim-American attitudes. In that poll, 47 percent of Muslims in America say they are Muslim first, American second."

I should add that I realize that this CNN piece was as much a political satement as what is being sold from the pulpit of these churches.

If you saw the piece last night, what did you think of the control these preachers had over their audience?

It reminded me very much of the Islamic schools I've seen, in that there wasn't a person shown who appeared to disagree w/ *anything* that was being said. They were all nodding in raptured agreement. It was as if they had stopped thinking when they entered the massive halls. Not one person appeared to be considering the statements that were being made. They were absorbing and internalizing the statements as soon as they were made.

God, I have to say that this reminded me very much of the infamous cults that led people to eventually kill themselves or others.

Down right scary stuff.

2 things!
Firstly, I am Canadian first and then a Jew. That is how I was raised, by parents who believed the same.

One thing that is worth thinking about is that the Muslim radicals are producing very large families all over the world, including America and Canada. Who is going to be in the places of power in the next generations. What's that going to mean for our countries. I don't need to insert question marks after these statements. Scary...isn't the word for it. I don't think the average person even begins to understand the numbers.
