Subject: Dress at church
Did I ask this before? My church is very informal. I wear jeans and sneakers and am not really underdressed compared to other people. Everyone looks about the same.
In the local Catholic newspaper, a priest took us (all Catholics) to task for dressing too casually for church. Aside from the fact that he pulled out his dictionary and found an obscure word for every simple word, and that he probably missed his target audience by doing that, his point should be looked at.
I know that I really should wear sneakers to church, especially because half the time my sneakers are really presentable in any place, they're so old. :-)
What is the typical dress at your church? Do you make a special effort on Sunday morning to look better than usual?
I make the effort if it's Xmas, Easter, a First Communion, Baptism, etc, but I really don't on a "regular" Sunday.
Joan

Re: Dress at Synagogue............... -- Barb, 09:50:37 08/04/07 Sat [1] (clgrtnt5-port-207.dial.telus.net/161.184.48.207)
In front of a Jewish congegation in many synagogues are the words that read: "Know Before Whom You Stand."
It is considered proper therefore to dress appropriately. It need not be very formal dress, but neat, tidy...perhaps as one would dress for a garden party.
Men of course wear the Kippah...the scull cap. For women it is optional whether or not they wear anything on their heads except in an Orthodox synagogue where they must have a hat on their heads, wear long sleeves and ankle length skirts.

Our sabbath dress is nicer than the average daily wear. For instance, one doesn't generally wear jeans in the sanctuary, unless they are a visitor and are unsure of the usual dress. It's not a matter of being "dressy" or showing what you have in your closet, but it's more out of respect and putting forth your best effort to come to worship. Some of the older Christians are adamant about appropriate dress, thinking it shows respect to "clean up" before coming into the house of God. I think God looks upon the heart. Some folks look spiffy on the outside but are dirty on the inside. Some folks can dress casual and be very reverent. While some may dress to the nines and be very disrespectful in a public service.

Bothering me..................... -- Barb, 15:06:57 08/05/07 Sun [1] (clgrtnt3-port-117.dial.telus.net/161.184.44.117)
When I mentioned that one is expected to dress for the Synagogue as one might dress for a garden party, I meant that one should dress in a casual but tidy manner. I don't want everyone picturing big floppy hats and fancy dresses. Yikes! lol

Re: Dress at church -- Lynn, 13:11:33 08/04/07 Sat [1] (ip72-193-232-42.lv.lv.cox.net/72.193.232.42)
We are told we should dress modestly when going to church. Woman and girls wear skirts or dresses, and men wear a white shirt ( most men do wear this in our church but it doesnt have to be white ), and dress pants. We have a Gothic girl who comes to church with her family, dresses all in black, fingernails, face etc, sneakers etc and they accept her because she has not yet converted. Go figure...

You mentioned that most men wear white shirts, although it doesn't have to be white. I noticed that the young Mormon missionary men that come to our town always wear a white shirt. Why do they wear white ?

Neysa...hope this answers your question -- Lynn, 22:13:10 08/04/07 Sat [1] (ip72-193-232-42.lv.lv.cox.net/72.193.232.42)
Wherever possible, a white shirt should be worn by the deacons, teachers, and priests who handle the sacrament. For sacred ordinances in the Church we often use ceremonial clothing, and a white shirt could be seen as a gentle reminder of the white clothing you wore in the baptismal font and an anticipation of the white shirt you will soon wear into the temple and onto your missions.
White symbolizes purity and holiness, and is reminiscent of the white clothing worn in the temple and at baptism. Furthermore, white shirts represent conservative, semi-formal attire in our culture, and wearing one shows respect for the seriousness of weekly Church meetings and the opportunity to take the sacrament.

Re: Joan: Aug State Holidays....and Church attire... -- Phil from AZ, 23:51:42 08/04/07 Sat [1] (71-223-15-110.phnx.qwest.net/71.223.15.110)
I have a great interest in holiday observances. When I lived in Germany, we observed that the Germans had a lot of them, something like 16-19, depending on the locale or region.
I found 2 other US states who celebrate holidays in Aug besides VJ Day in RI. There's Colorado Day on 1 Aug, when residents there celebrate their statehood. Hawaiians celebrate Admission Day or Statehood Day, which is the third Friday in August.
In Ireland and Brit, they 'celebrate' practical summer holidays. They call them BANK HOLIDAYS, which occur 3-4 times during the summer, almost always on Mondays. I like those because they're a day off with no pretense that sometimes surrounds holidays.
The day after Christmas is also a holiday in Brit and Ire. They call it Boxing Day in the UK and St Stevens Day in Ireland. Ditto Germany, for the day after Christmas. You spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with family, and the day after Christmas with your friends. Its a very nice tradition.
More on topic: I wear my best jeans and tennis shoes to church on Sunday, but with a shirt with a collar. Everything's early here in AZ and the church I attend has their svc at 8am. I just thank the Good Lord if I can get their on time. Thus, nothing fancy.
Take care, God Bless,
Phil from AZ

I like the idea of a day off just to have a day off. -- Joan, 19:02:27 08/05/07 Sun [1] (ip68-0-253-131.ri.ri.cox.net/68.0.253.131)
Who needs the burden of somber remembrance on a summer holiday anyway? We all want a day off, so let's lobby for another summer holiday, one that celebrates nothing but the joy of a summer afternoon away from work.

I have an "official" Thank-You card here ready to go (in appreciation for the book you sent). Ask Barb how bad I am at good intentions but lack feet to get to the post office. It will get there eventually though. I still have Barb's birthday box looking back at me even now. :(

I am a March baby. (2nd, same as Dr.Suess! In fact folks born in March are very likely to become a writer- or so they say!) Yep I came in like a lamb and am going out like a lion! lol
