Subject: I don't even want a choice. :-)

I want Billy to have a good, honorable job. In my mind, that means any job that's morally good. I know that prostitution is legal in some areas, so I don't want to say "any job that's legal". Because politics is so full of criminals and criminal acts, I don't want him to be a politician. He might turn out to be the only honest politician in the history of the world, but I think that's not likely.

Priest or Father. Maybe there isn't so much of a difference. :-)

I don't have a preference. I wouldn't want him to be a priest if he didn't want to be one. And I don't want him to have kids if he doesn't want any.

He shouldn't be choosing his career or planning a family by what he thinks I want.

I honestly don't have a preference. I would love grandchildren, but I don't think that I would feel like I missed something if I don't have any. There are always ways to interact w/ kids. OTOH, if I hadn't had my own child, I would be miserable. But grandkids aren't our choice. It's not our life, it's our kids', and they get to choose.

I honestly never thought of Billy as a priest.

Judging by his reaction, I don't think he ever considered it either. He laughed.

His girlfriend said, "Noooo!" :-)

I think Billy likes girls too much to be a priest. He might never had kids, but he loves to have a girlfriend. I don't think he has the constitution required for celibacy. It's not just the physical part of it. Celibacy is a commitment that I think my son would never really want to make. To commit to never having a family of your own (no wife or kids) is huge. It's not an easy thing.

Billy is an only child. I think the life of priest would be especially lonely for him. Many priests, though they don't have a wife or kids or their own, have brothers and sisters. Being an only kid, once we're gone, Billy would be very much alone in the world.

Like my aunt said, "Visitors are nice, but it's not like family."

So I guess after thinking about it, I do have a preference. I would rather see Billy have a family of his own--a wife and kids if he wants them. But it's not really about Priest vs grandkids.

Joan
