Heavens, the Jews have been beaten to a pulp with jokes, but they can be funny all the same! Lighten up, Phil!

You have admitted to being non-religious. Often, folks of that ilk are insensitive to other people's religious views. As a result, they say things they shouldn't. My father attended an Episcopalian military high school for which he still has fond memories. By coincidence, my father's wife is Episcopalian. I'm sure they would not find the 'joke' funny.

Although it seems that, based on what she's said this and other forums, its strangely out-of-character, I still find Catie's 'joke' rude and disgusting...for both personal and practical reasons. This is a Catholic forum and we discuss serious issues here. Clever humor is one thing; bar-room banter is another thing. Perhaps its more appropriate for some other forum.

Nearly all educated people are aware of the evil things done to Jews. The vast maj'ty of humanity condemns these acts, correctly, in my view. Perhaps if you read the Book of Acts, you will also discover atrocities committed against Christians during the early days of the Church...often done by Jews. All kinds of evil things have been done to, and by, folks of faith. So please don't lecture me about 'lightening up' Barb. I find it condescending, an attitude sadly typical of folks from a non-religious background.

Finally, its up to Joan to decide what stands here, and what doesn't. We should be mindful of Free Speech. Thus, it is a slippery slope to delete anything, something some other forum leaders do not take seriously...done to preserve some deluded notion of harmony and comfort. Thus, I made a quick comment on my thoughts, something you may accept or reject.

Take care, God Bless,

Phil from humid AZ

[> [> [> There is a huge difference between being "non religious" -- Barb, 13:12:50 07/31/07 Tue [1] (clgrtnt7-port-130.dial.telus.net/161.184.52.130)

and having respect for my religion Phil, and feeling hurt for jabs taken at it by insulting and thoughtless jokes. Still, many religions are poked fun at in the same way and there is nothing wrong with a little teasing if it isn't mean spirited. When I say I am non-religious that does not mean that I do not practice my religion at all, only that I do not do it in an orthodox manner. I am certainly not of "that ilk!" and I am not insensitive. When the Jews were held and murdered in the concentration camps of Europe, they still told jokes and shared humour in the direst of situations. Despite that this is a Catholic forum and serious issues are discussed, there can also be a little less seriousness sometimes too.

Perhaps in your impulsive need to respond to my long-winded, thoughtful response, you missed something:

"Clever humor is one thing; bar-room banter is another thing."

In short, I enjoy a joke just as much as the next guy. However, I find this joke crude and inappropriate. But since Catie is not likely to repeat this behavior often, I favor stating my opinion and moving on. In the end, I think we'll all get past this.

And yeah, I agree with you. Those people of ilk inevitably irk me. LoL.

No matter, it is who you are and I have come to expect it and do not take it to heart.
You have the "impulsive need" to respond, more than any of us.
The joke was not bar-room banter. I guess you don't go to bars often! Heck, I don't go at all but I know the difference anyway.
Please do move on, and think about moving away from Arizona. I fear there is far too much adventure for you there! lol

...on all these forums. I only participate on this 1 and (very rarely) on Brendas. I sometimes wonder what a few of you would do w/o forums.

Since I moved back from Ireland, I do not go to bars either. And if you do not take much of what I say to heart, why do you bother to respond? I've always believed that its to curry favor with forum leaders by slamming me and a couple other folks. This tactic won't work on this forum, though, as Joan has a mind of her own, and is above demanding 'loyalty' above intelligent discussion. Hence, this intelligent discussion will continue unabated.

Sincerely,

Phil from AZ

We all know why you do not "participate" on the other forums...you've been banned!
Without the forums..gees, I guess my mother birthed me so one day I could achieve the goal to post on forums. Get serious, Phil!
Absolutely nobody wishes to curry favours with forum leaders by slamming you. You manage to dig deep dark holes all by yourself. Haven't you figured that one out yet?
I know that Joan has a mind of her own. I know the intelligent discussion will continue unabated, as it should. I also know that you will continue to post when and where you can and cause any uproar that you can when you see the opportunity to do so. The forums where you post may change Phil, but unfortunatley...you do not!

FWIW, that joke wasn't bar-room banter--it was toilet humor. I can't imagine that anyone would find it insulting to their religion, because it wasn't about religion. It was about a "dirty" word--it was word play. I've heard similar toilet humor jokes about Pissghetti. I don't think Italians or chefs get insulted by Pissghetti jokes. :-)

Since the author of the joke isn't unknown to everyone here, there is no reason to even wonder about the intent. It was meant as a light-hearted play on words. It should be accepted as that. To take it any other way is to look for insult where it doesn't exist. It's looking for a fight over nothing.

If we want to continue to have "intelligent" discussions on this board, we can't pick each other's posts to pieces, assigning evil motives when none exist.

Joan
