Subject: Conversion Stories
I'd be interesting in hearing stories from people who have converted to Catholicism from other faiths. I've been going through this for the past year and will be starting RCIA this fall. I was going to do it last year but it didn't seem like the right time.
As a kid, I usually went to a non-denominational community church (baptized as a Presbyterian) but stopped going in high school. I experimented in college (meaning I looked at other faiths) and ended up as a quasi-agnostic. Elements of Buddhism and Native American religions (especially Black Elk's teachings)are still very appealing to me but I feel most at home in the Catholic Church.
As a biologist/ecologist, one of my biggest stumbling blocks is when I hear christians ridiculing science and evolution. The same goes for scientists who ridicule all forms of faith. To me, this has never been an either/or proposition. I have a feeling that this topic will keep coming up though so I'll just leave it alone for now.
Thanks for starting this forum Joan. I hope everyone will play nicely.

I converted from Catholicism to Protestantism some yrs ago. But I am most thankful for my background in the former, esp. my Christian education.
Good luck with your new forum Joan!! Take care, God Bless,

Thanks, Phil. I hope this turns out to be a busy place.
What denomination do you belong to?

...with you and I around. In my case, for better or worse. LoL. Just for the record, I call myself a non-denominational Christian.

I was baptized as an infant, so no conversion story here.
But we do have Catholic education in common this year. This fall, as you're starting your RCIA classes, I'll be taking on a Catechism class on my own. I've helped out for 2 years, so I guess it's time to try it on my own.
Can I ask if there is one thing that brought you to the Catholic Church?
BTW, I agree with you on science and religion. Science isn't evil, and religion isn't naive. There's no reason the two can't be compatible.
Joan

As silly as it may seem, a news article I read about Pope Benedict in February 2006 got my attention and I began to look into the Catholic Church. I should have printed it out, but I didn't know what kind of impact it was going to have at the time. It basically said what I mentioned earlier, that science and faith were not opposing forces because both were created by God. There was much more to it than that, but I don't remember the details.
That article was the hook. I have learned a lot more about the church since then. I particularly like the communion of Saints and the devotion to Mary. I feel like with the saints and with Mary there is someone else pulling for me. I like the idea that there is someone there to intercede for me.
