It is never "necessary" to line breed although in this breed it is actually hard not to when all the dogs come from a relatively small and recent foundation stock. If you do "hard" line breeding (or inbreeding) you need to know about the immediate ancestors from the previous 4 or 5 generations, you need to use almost perfect specimens of absolutely unquestionable health as by close breeding you will suffer degeneration of vitality and vigour as well as bringing hidden and perhaps harmful recessive genes into expression. In short, you need to know what you've got and what you are dealing with before embarking on this type of breeding as the consequences can be truly awful. A safer way to try to set type (there are no short cuts Jordan) is to select parents of similar type but not so closely related. This way you are selecting the expressed genes you desire without so much of the risk and you are not suffering from the deleterious effects on future stock of close breeding. In my view, this breed is not one we should consider close breeding with and certainly not without the full battery of health and temperament testing for a few generations first. The risks are far too high for any potential gain. I would recommend making small improvements with each generation and checking those improvements through testing before breeding from that generation. It is the ONLY way to breed safely and responsibly.
