Subject: Folks above are correct, sure, they had the right personnel to train them hard - but still, 5 winners in a row is such an interesting statistical aberration. Even Venezuela only managed 2 in a row at Miss Universe! In my opinion, Christy Fitchtner (1986), Courtney Gibbs (1988) and Gretchen Polhemus (1989) were clear, runaway victories. I would have gone with Diane Martin of Arizona in 1987 over Michelle Royer, but Michelle is still one of my Top 10 ever Miss USAs and I thought she should have won Miss Universe that year. The only one I didn't understand was Laura Herring in 1985, though ironically she's one of the few Miss USAs to ever bridge the gap between my two interests - film and pageantry! She was in one of the greatest avant garde films of all time - David Lynch's 'Mulholland Dr' in 2001.

Laura Herring won over Miss New Mexico, the 1st r/u. The previous year, Miss New Mexico won Miss USA. I too, thought Miss NM should have won. Miss Herring did a brief bid for fame in the movies. (NT)The 1st r/u to Christy Fitchner was Halle Berry, Miss Ohio who later won an Emmy and an Oscar.
